This is a great song... and Celine is a great singer. Unfortunately, "River Deep, Mountain High" has a tremendous need for "upfront and heavy, backup vocals" which just isn't there in this performance. Too bad.. the song suffers because of that. And if the backup singers are there (and they are, just barely... the sound tech engineer needs to appologise and then ...be fired.

@calivita77 its called "getting into the music." If you were in the music business you know you have to sell your music to the audience and she succeeds. Just look at everyone standing up dancing, clapping, etc. Not every artist can get the people into a song like that.

Celine certainly has those notes, and with much "better" tone than Tina... but this song doesn't call for good tone, it calls for guts. And this version is pretty darn gutless. I believe Miss Anna Mae Bullock ain't have but one rag doll. Celine Dion...? Not so much.

Celine has a lovely voice and is pretty much pitch perfect - yet there are others (a whole lot less perfect maybe) who affect me more and therefore I rate them as greater artists e.g. Streisand, Anastacia, Aretha & in a very different way people like Dilana.
This performance, as good as it is, is sterile and passionless alonside early Tina Turner versions. Mary Amora & Cosima Devito have covered it better than this

This reminds me of when Pat Boone would cover songs by legitimate rockers like Fats Domino and Little Richard in watered down, emasculated versions contrived to be as inoffensive and unthreatening as possible. Celine should stick to making babies and stop insulting great music with her loathsome "tributes".
There are aspects of this performance and singing that are clearly over the top. She can be VERY melodramatic. But that's because she is SO into it and she knows she has the vocal locked up cold. This rendition is much better listened to without the video. She is a remarkable singer. Her style, not so remarkable.
I love Celine, but... I will just say this: Just like NOBODY can sing "All By Myself" like Celine, NOBODY can sing "River Deep Mountain High" like Tina.
Why do people have have to constantly compare so maliciously? A simple "I prefer the original" or "that's an interesting rendition" would suffice but no, personal opinions get generalised to statements about artists' personalities and overall capabilities. I very much doubt Tina Turner would approve of people dissing Celine Dion (and vice versa). They are both very talented artists in their own right. What people should realise is, that Celine is playing to her audience in this video and if you look at them, you can see she succeeds.
If you listen to a recorded version of this song by Celine, you will notice a vast difference in quality.
Obviously you can never compete with the original classic by Ike & Tina Turner, but Celine to her credit, does a fine job.

Not as terrible as I anticipated... but still, put it next to Tina's version and it just disappears. Celine certainly has those notes, and with much "better" tone than Tina... but this song doesn't call for good tone, it calls for guts. And this version is pretty darn gutless. I believe Miss Anna Mae Bullock ain't have but one rag doll. Celine Dion...? Not so much.

@ItsBjornByatch I look to music to give me an emotional experience. Celine has a lovely voice and is pretty much pitch perfect - yet there are others (a whole lot less perfect maybe) who affect me more and therefore I rate them as greater artists e.g. Streisand, Anastacia, Aretha & in a very different way people like Dilana.
This performance, as good as it is, is sterile and passionless alonside early Tina Turner versions. Mary Amora & Cosima Devito have covered it better than this

This reminds me of when Pat Boone would cover songs by legitimate rockers like Fats Domino and Little Richard in watered down, emasculated versions contrived to be as inoffensive and unthreatening as possible. Celine should stick to making babies and stop insulting great music with her loathsome "tributes".

There are aspects of this performance and singing that are clearly over the top. She can be VERY melodramatic. But that's because she is SO into it and she knows she has the vocal locked up cold. This rendition is much better listened to without the video. She is a remarkable singer. Her style, not so remarkable.

Why do people have have to constantly compare so maliciously? A simple "I prefer the original" or "that's an interesting rendition" would suffice but no, personal opinions get generalised to statements about artists' personalities and overall capabilities. I very much doubt Tina Turner would approve of people dissing Celine Dion (and vice versa). They are both very talented artists in their own right. Some may prefer one, some the other, and that's perfectly fine. But all this hating is stupid.

I take my hat off to you for your civility. Ichecked "like" on your comments before I saw the video.......However, after watching her performance, I must say she didn't do it any justice. In short it was abismall at best. If you're going to take on a "classic" show some class and do it right. If not, "just don't do it!"

Je conviens totalement que je trouve des bruits de Celine bons, Tina fait vraiment la chanson plue a besoin de permission....… Je pense aussi que les gens le prennent à personnel, elle peuvent chanter celui qu'elle veuille si la permission le permet. Dans tous ce que étant dit, la version de Tina est certainement meilleure, il est difficile, I do speak french but if you cant understamnd sorry i dont speak english. i used a translater forr this.
