For whatever reason or concrete motive, they respect white forreignors because of what they look like and the advanced civilization they represent. Thais think they gain status/credibility by associating (or appearring to be associated) themselves with caucasians/their respective countries so that they look good in front of other Thais.
Companies associate or quote western countries to make their products credible. Thais mostly don't speak western/european languages to practice (which would be a good reason) but they do it to look/sound like they're worth more in front of other thais. They'll try hard and loud even when the accent/pronunciation/grammar is appalling. As long as they look like the bog shot in front of other Thais.
They'll hang out with caucasians (maybe they're truly friends at the same time...why not) to look like they're westernized and have a background of higher status with their supposed skills in foreign language and culture. It looks like they're of higher status than other Thais.
You think they'll use Thai products/merchandise to keep their economy alive like their government asks them to do? That'll be the day. God forbid they are caught using local thai ghetto products cause they won't look as sophisticated and high class as they would if they use western/european products. Do you think these thai policymakers/politicians use local thai products as their main flaunt?
While they smile in front of caucasians, they treat other thais and fellow countrymen like $hiT because they want to look better than others (other thais). THAIS ARE FAKE. Thailand has faced hard times this past 10 yrs, and still is, with some poverty ridden cities but Thai's make th best of it and smile their way through it knowing Buddha will help them. If my country was so up front and lovely I would be smiling too!

I have seen Thai people reserving their smiles for the dollar stuffed farangs only, not the khaegs or "nigros" (they still say that) who are poorer and uglier. In Thai Airways flights, the hostesses take special care selectively of farangs only. So there is a method behind the madness.

When I am in Chiang mai, I can see thai people smiling all the time and I can see foreigners(falangs)not smiling . They are in holidays , they are welcomed , they have money , they have everything to enjoy but they not smile so much ... Why they not smile ? After few weeks they begins to relax and smile , but too late , they have to go back already to their countries where smiling people are fools . Poor falangs !Don t think too much loy ... SMILE ! I think Thai smiles are so disarming. Stressy farangs/foreigners should get a grip and get with the free flowing happier than normal lifestyle there. Yes not everyone is an angel, but even the devils like Thai taxi drivers who tell foreigners "Meter not working!" are still far more fun to deal with than the grumpy faces I encounter daily in London. Lol on the other hand if Tesco & and other global companies keep on spreading like a virus in Thailand they'll end up as grumpy as your average Brit
In my expereince and research I have come up with a saying, "Behind that Thai smile are some very sharp teeth", and this is especially so for Thai females. Foreigners beware, Thai people already know what i mean. A Thai smile does not carry the same currency that it does in the west.
