Just because Anvil is being pushed by VH1 all of a sudden and are getting a lot of media coverage people everywhere are talking about how great they are, so influential, amongst the best. Anvil sucks, their songs suck, stop saying they don't. Every time I try to listen to them I can't, it's not good music compared to what they were up against. That is why they didn't make it huge, people didn't like them...
@memohavok You missed the point there genius. Anvil sucks, Motley, Skid Row, Iron Maiden, etc. etc. etc. are great. Anvil came from the same scene as the 80s bands, they just weren't nearly as good. All of a sudden a bunch of poser metal heads are suddenly singing praises to Anvil. The fans didn't make them a huge band in the 80s for a reason. VH1 has them all over the TV now and people like you just drink the kool aid and accept what they tell you to listen to. They suck

Glad these guys are getting their due respect these days. It's pretty impossible to not love this band. Especially after watching "Anvil - The Story of Anvil" documentary. Anyone who has ever been in a band at any level will love the movie. If you haven't seen it, then what are you waiting for?!!! ANVIL!!!!

@snoop0851 Nope sorry, ANVIL has released 13 albums to date with a new one coming out this year (2011). Check out their Wikipedia entry if nothing else.
Yep, for all you that dont know these guys were around a good 4-5 years BEFORE Metallica, thats probably why they are mentioned on the Cliff Em All video, saw them live about 6 months ago after a very long wait and they sure did not let me down, one of the best bands I have seen live in 26 years of gigging, by the way, if they were from the Bay Area around 1983 I suspect you may have heard a lot more of them, wrong place wrong time - thats music, by the way Snoop, they have done 13 albums, not 1

progression is not getting simpler that is called regression. I remember when I heard the BLack Album the first time it was a huge disappointment. Metallica became a radio rock bands that rednecks like. There will always be good bands around. I didnt stop liking Metallica because they got popular. They changed to sell more records. Lars crying about people stealing and bootleging their music was hilarious. When I was growing up that was how bands got known. I sampled it then if I liked purchased
One more comment. Metal is more than music, it is a brotherhood. Load turned against the brotherhood. Anvil understands the metal botherhood, and they will NEVER turn against the brotherhood. \m/
So what you are saying here is once you start in a metal band at 18yrs old you better damn well never change your style of music, or you can change it once it is in a limited spectrum of metal music. Because if you do you are a sell out. I guess I sold out to the brotherhood years ago when I cut my hair. Because if it is a real brotherhood we would all still have long hair, tight jeans, denim jacket with patches all over it.
I guess you and I have different opinions of what selling out is. I agree with you, not all changess are sellouts, everything changes and evolves over time. I'm certainly not the same as I was when I was 18, nobody is. Yes, Metallica changed as all bands evolve and change but it's WHAT they changed to that made them sell outs. By making such a radical change, they turned their backs on the early fans and what they changed to became the very thing they stood against when they were formed.
No they did not turn there backs on fans. That is your opinion. It is not based on fact. I am an early Metallica fan. They did not turn on me in any way. In fact I think Load and Reload are great rock albums. The music in those albums better suit James voice now. That's my opinion but held by many. Just because I say it does not make it fact. As for you.
when they played in Australia a few yeas ago lars was asked on radio, if they were playing new material? his reply was"we don't know the stuff of St anger well enough yet and load and reload were crap so we are just gonna play the old stuff"
You gotta love Anvil! Anvil has stayed true to their fans and METAL itself through it all, good times or bad. In the 90's while other metal bands were slapping their fans across the face by cutting their hair and COMPLETELY cahnging their sound to match the current trend (Metallica), what did Anvil do in the 90's? Kept their hair and got even fucking HEAVIER! There has never been another band that has been more true to metal and what it stands for than ANVIL. They LIVE Metal! \m/\m/
There is more to music and art than hair and looks. A musician is an artist. Therefore they play and write what they feel is right for them. Metallica cutting their hair/changing looks did not take away from the great music they have produced. I don't have long hair anymore. I don't wear the same clothes as I used to. My taste in music has grown since my teen/twenties. To whom did I sell out to, myself, you? Maybe an artist that never changes their art is selling out to themselves?
I realize bands evolve and change over time, but Load was an abrupt 180. Metallica had a huge fan base at the time, built up mostly by loyal fans who were with them from the begining, and liked their fuck you, we'll do it our way attitude. In the mid 90's they became the very thing they stood against in the begining. Load was nothing about evolvement, it was blatently all about selling out, plain and simple. They slapped all their metal fans in the face, and welcomed the pop fans.
No doubt Load was a big change, as was the Black Album. However that does not mean they sold out. Hetfields greatest influence comes from artists like Phil Lynott. Phil's music changed all the time, he never played it safe. Could Metallica kept churning out albums like Puppets etc, sure they could have. That's not what they have ever been about. Every album is a progression from the previous. That is a true artist. If you want the same from a band every album, you got Iron Maiden for that.
I'm not saying Metallica is not a great band. Bands do change over time, it's called evolvement. Evolvement is a gradual change. Load was an instant change. It's no coincidence when they did the change what they did the change to. They changed the way they did simply to make as much money as possible. there are several ways they could have instantly changed, they chose that one. No matter how it is justified, I will never be convinced it wasn't a sell out, period.
I never said Metallica wasn't good, all I said was they turned their back on all their early fans that put Metallica where they were at the time of Load. If it weren't for the early fans who followed Metallica because of the metal, Metallica would have been nothing. Metallica should have remembered that and not turned their back on those people. Metal is more than just a style if music, it's an ideology. Metal fans love it because it goes against conformity. With Load, they conformed.
Hell yeah a bassist that doesn't play with a pick! That's hard to find nowadays. Only other finger-bassist I can think of is John Myung and Steve Harris.
@overkilljoybassguy Man your 41 years old you oughta know THESE guy's!! ANVIL, EXCITER, VENOM, RAVEN. Come on, all these these guys set the table for THRASH! Throw in Motorhead and Sabbath and ya hear where Thrash grew from!
ANVIL has NEVER gotten airplay here. I've heard the name but never checked into them, for whatever reasons. I've always gone the Metallica, Slayer, Venom, Exodus, Megadeth, etc... route. And of course Maiden, Sabbath, Priest...etc...
The Setlist: 1-March of The Crabs 2-666 3-School Love 4-Winged Assassins 5-JackHammer 6-Forged in Fire 7-Paper General 8-Computer Drone 9-Mad Dog 10-Metal On Metal I also have the Piledriver, DBC, Exciter, Razor show of that superb night in Montreal!

By making such a radical change, they turned their backs on the early fans and what they changed to became the very thing they stood against when they were formed.
theraj662 2 years ago
No they did not turn there backs on fans. That is your opinion. It is not based on fact. I am an early Metallica fan. They did not turn on me in any way. In fact I think Load and Reload are great rock albums. The music in those albums better suit James voice now. That's my opinion but held by many. Just because I say it does not make it fact. As for you.

Point taken. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one, lol. Keep on rockin'!\m/

when they played in Australia a few yeas ago lars was asked on radio, if they were playing new material? his reply was"we don't know the stuff of St anger well enough yet and load and reload were crap so we are just gonna play the old stuff"
lienrodeo 2 years ago
I find that very hard to believe. I seen Metallica a few months back and they played something from everything.

theraj662 2 years ago

They slapped all their metal fans in the face, and welcomed the pop fans.
theraj662 2 years ago
No doubt Load was a big change, as was the Black Album. However that does not mean they sold out. Hetfields greatest influence comes from artists like Phil Lynott. Phil's music changed all the time, he never played it safe. Could Metallica kept churning out albums like Puppets etc, sure they could have. That's not what they have ever been about. Every album is a progression from the previous. That is a true artist. If you want the same from a band every album, you got Iron Maiden for that.
damslainte 2 years ago
I'm not saying Metallica is not a great band. Bands do change over time, it's called evolvement. Evolvement is a gradual change. Load was an instant change. It's no coincidence when they did the change what they did the change to. They changed the way they did simply to make as much money as possible. there are several ways they could have instantly changed, they chose that one. No matter how it is justified, I will never be convinced it wasn't a sell out, period.
theraj662 2 years ago
I never said Metallica wasn't good, all I said was they turned their back on all their early fans that put Metallica where they were at the time of Load. If it weren't for the early fans who followed Metallica because of the metal, Metallica would have been nothing. Metallica should have remembered that and not turned their back on those people. Metal is more than just a style if music, it's an ideology. Metal fans love it because it goes against conformity. With Load, they conformed.

Well I guess you clearly have an inside knowledge to Metallica that I simply don't have access to.

Hell yeah a bassist that doesn't play with a pick! That's hard to find nowadays. Only other finger-bassist I can think of is John Myung and Steve Harris.

bloodmoonblooz 2 years ago 2
ANVIL has NEVER gotten airplay here. I've heard the name but never checked into them, for whatever reasons. I've always gone the Metallica, Slayer, Venom, Exodus, Megadeth, etc... route. And of course Maiden, Sabbath, Priest...etc...
overkilljoybassguy 2 years ago
Check out some Exciter, great band as well, only didn't do well because the drummer sang, no front man. That will kill ya quicker than the bomb.
