BEST ANSWER on this subject: I do not like to get in the habit of saying one style is better than others. In regards to karate as a sport-I believe tournament compeition, that while it has some benefits, it does create a mindset and habits that will not work for actual combat. I also agree that when you can not attck the joints, eyes, throat, fingers, groin, etc that a true martial artist would not be able to effectively use their style.
No instructor want syou to perform kata exactly as they do after about godan level. By this time you should be able to understand the myo and the art eventually become your best teacher. The subtleties that Kanazawa sensei exhibits are his own, you will and should have your own. The mimic stage ends after about Nidan/Sandan.
@donoberloh Formally, I would argue that it ends after yondan because it's the rank of "technical expert". But just formally. Of course, the mimic stage could end even if you are a shodan when you never did another exam after the shodan exam, but trained for many years all the forms and techniques thoroughly to get to the stage beyond the mimic-stage as you mentioned. So, I have the same opinion as you, just want to explain further (in a way also according to my own point of view).
CGiehl - this man is a LEGEND. Few people in history are as good as Kanazawa. He has his OWN international organization. He can decide the correct way to do this kata.
The great thing about Mr. Kanazawa is the way he snaps the wrist for blocks and punches. Beautiful kimes in his techniques. This man studied tai chi which he says shows a karateka how to breath. This is important part of shotokan karate-do.
Please show some respect. This is Sensei Kanazawa who is a great master of karate. "This dude looks a bit sloppy?" Learn some Karate tradition before you start slagging off Masters.

His kiba dachi looks rather sloppy. The outsides of your feet must be straight, which incidentally often causes your toes to point slightly inwards. He definitly had the outsides at angles. That's probably not just an inter-club difference either, that's a pretty standardized stance...
Either way, he does Ji'in well, however there's nothing I can take out of it.
Nah, I think it just looks that way because Mr Kanazawa's a bit lankier than most japanese karateka. He was a top karate guy in his prime - kicked loads of ass across the world.
I bet your instructor's heard of him - ask if he's heard of Hirokazu Kanazawa.

Unfortunately he does a wrong Kosa-Uke (Gedan-Barai, Ude-Uche-Uke)...he does it with the wrong side...some kind like "gyaku-kosa-uke" :-)

Kanazawa is one of the living legents of karate. It is very hard for a non expert to judge his kata.
