I was a kid when this came out in 75 or 76...(born 67) but we played little league baseball then...and our coach..was a rock and roller to the core. He had a HOT blonde girlfriend, drank beer during the game (nobody cared then) and had one very cool Chevy van...with custom painting on the side..which was pretty normal then. I miss those days...innocence..fun...just watching Russ and wondering if I could ever be that cool.
Isn't it amazing that there wasn't a Chevy Van before this song came out? Following the sucess of this tune GM turned out a Chevy Van in '75, and the rest is history!
I'm also the age where this song ruled the waves. Darn, they just don't make em' like this anymore. The 70's were so wonderful to me and this song brings it all back. Thanks for the awesome song and Peace always...
@bigman4205 The 70's can never be matched. Most glorious times ever blessed upon the earth by GOD next to the 50's. People have no clue how America was more free. Every decade that passes removes more and more Liberty and Freedom from the People thanks to the liberal/progressives who are bent on bringing Socialism/Communism/Marxism and eventually Fascist dictatorships. They must be stopped for future generations SAKE!!!
I was listening to this song right about when I hit puberty. I hear it now and I remember my first yearnings for girls, riding my bicycle to the Beach Boardwalk, and watching in awe as my forgets and their friends would customize their vans and get all the chicks, and standing
This song reminds me of Dean Corll,Lawrence Bittaker,Freeway Killers, and Ed Kemper guy because they used to drive vans around when they were looking for their next victim.Dean Corll drove White van when he was on prowl and Lawrence Bittaker and his friend Roy Norris had van they used together and called it "Murder Mack" and went all over south Cal picking up teenage girl and killing them.Freeway killer did the same except only pickup boys instead. This song reminds me of those creeps.
This is probably my favorite song of the 70s decade. Growing up as a kid in the 70s was the best. I know; I was there. Kids today have no clue how wonderful and awesome it was. This song played all summer long on AM WKTM in Charleston, SC. This song always takes me back to all those hot days on Folly beach playing in the water, getting sunburned. The best. Thanks for posting.
Heros are the drafted ones who did their jobs.... not the volunteers.. I volunteered. I did my job because I wanted to. Fuck calling volunteers heros.. Thats bullshit. imo
@PlanTonto at the time my aunt and uncle lived there,we went to visit for 2 weeks. my cousin dean was 16 and took us to a drive in, young frankenstein was debuting on one screen,an r rated movie on the second screen, and a x rated on the third, couldn't hear the movie on the third screen, but i sure saw it! went to his brothers apt (shangrela) partied our asses off, california style, didnt last long but i hung in as long as i could. when i heard that song on the radio,i loved it!
i got this 45 when i was 8 years old from califonia, from a radio station in indio. took this song to missouri, nobody had heard this song at that time
i had a van back then, wasnt a chevy but a ford, still had all the stuff in it, big red shag covered bed, lol had lots of fun in that van, girls just loved vans, lol god im old lol
Gordy your profile says you are 54 in 2011. That means you were born in 1957 and you say you were in Vietnam in 1969. I was over there inn 69 70 and did not see any 12 year old grunts. Sounds like a wannabbee liar who can't count.
i remember the 60s, down at the court house burning my draft card and screaming HELL NO WE WON'T GO. then i was drafted and sent to nam in late 69. i remember the first part of the 70s really sucked for me. til i got home from nam, at least no one was trying to kill me then, just throwing rotten eggs and dog shit on me and calling me baby killer.
@gordy1957 I'm really sorry to hear what you had to go through, Gordy. If it's any consolation, veterans are treated a lot better now. People are recognizing that you were only the messenger, not the sender, and you were trying to do the right thing. I salute you for your bravery and courage..
Incredible time back then. Love, freedom, and life in America. Where have the days gone. I'm 48 now, and this is on my "top 10" list of all time. Listen to it every chance I get. Reminds me of my wife of 27 years...what an incredible journey it has been, my dear! Wish we had a Chevy Van right now we could head west in. Love you more than you'll ever dream of. Nothing like travelling 5000 miles with you...I look forward to the next 1,000,000.....
Where have those days gone? That's easily. AIDS put the final nail in the coffin of the so-called sexual revolution. In the late 70's the movie "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" led to a much less trusting atmosphere as far as meeting new people goes. Definitely more uptight now, and don't know if we will ever recapture some of the freedom of those halcyon days, at least not in my lifetime.
I was a skinny kid back then, and I made love with my girl friend in my MGB rdst. I can't hardly get into one now. I would loved to have had a van back then.
This song reminds me of the summer of 75. I was 18 and she was 17 with long dark hair and emerald green eyes. We spent that whole year getting to know each other and the level of intimacy that we had was unlike anything I experienced before in my life. This song brings me back to that wonderful time... a year I'll never forget.
Its so good to know you are all are still here and this time isnt gone. I love hearing your memories .. I have so many myself. It was a good time and worth remembering. Im very happy new tech gives us the chance to not forget.

@gherg777 I AGREE THE 60S AND 70S WERE GOOD BUT I WOULD NOT COUNT MY 4 YEARS IN THE MARINE CORPS AS BAD. MY TOUR IN Vietnam WAS ROUGH BUT i GOT TO SERVE WITH SOME OF THE FINEST GUYS THIS COUNTRY EVER PRODUCED. I KNOW THE WW2 GUYS WERE AWESOME AND ARE CALLED THE GREATEST GENERATION, BUT THE MEN I SERVED WITH WOULD HAVE BEEN THEIR EQUAL AT ANY TIME. I AM STILL IN CONTACT WITH SOME OF THEM AFTER OVER 40 YEARS AND THEY ALL HAVE LED GOOD LIVES AND CONTRIBUTED TOTHIS COUNTRY. SEMPER FI.
@bacsi19461 im surprised you like a song like this then..this is love not war (what a marine would call hippie shit).my brother passed away from nam injurys when he got home, & before he did he begged me not to go (i didnt, i burned the draft card with the approval of my grandad (a ww2 naval hero).. then i marched by his side in vets against nam..so the guys that refused to go were heros too...just like you..
@tommieparch Wow Tommie, did you miss the mark on this comment. One can appreciate fellow soldiers, marines. etc. without glorifying war. We were 19-20 years old and did what we were sent to do. Remember, there was a draft back then. One can also fight in a war and still appreciate great songs that speak of love and good times. I am sorry abut your brother as well as all of my friends who died over there in what turned out to be a fruitless war. We have to honor those who went.
Oh what good memories CB radios, nice murals on the side of the vans, carefree time glad to have been part of it. Missing you michelle K from NB your friend from thousand palms ca.......
my humble lil repost: I was a kid when this came out in 75 or 76...(born 67) but we played little league baseball then...and our coach..was a rock and roller to the core. This song reminds me of the days of sneaking friends in the trunk of the car at the drive in and hanging out with friends on the beach by a fire. Life was simple and easy. Great lttle song.
@silverexplosion They did. End of Vietnam, prosperous nation with self worth... and an endless stream of energetic and prolific music makers churning out songs that hit home.... nuff said.
@waypastprime, thank you, thank you and thank you again for those wonderful words about the United States of America being a propserous nation with self worth with an endless stream of energy and imagination. Now politicians have made us each hate other because you are a Democrat or a Republican, whatever happened to just being good old Americans?
Early 70's, a cross country trip to California and if I close my eyes and let this song play out I can almost make it back to that day at the beach. The way she smiled, the way she walked and how her perfume and her touch could drive me crazy, what I wouldn't give to have that one day at the beach to live over. I miss her.
Mid-70's Casa Grande, AZ. I was a little kid, but this instantly transports me back to a time and place long gone, when this song blared from every car radio within a 100-mile radius. Makes me feel ANCIENT, but brings me closer to family and friends now also long gone.Thank you for posting.
@badback64 Sarah was GREAT! She was my cousin too, cousin! I had a 1970 VW camper pop-top- which is what she did to me, come to think of it. Miss those years.
this is the shittiest song ive heard in a while. just watched "the van" flic, which i must say was hands down amazing flic. highly reccomended, this song or the sndtrk, no im afraid
You should be Kim Kardashian's new husband.................... poser................... or electrocuted......... whichever gives you more thrills. Young ppl just don't understand this stuff............... when times were slower and simpler.
One better.....I lost my virginity in a chevy van about the time this song was playing on the radio all the time. Never forget it! Thanks (you know who)
Apply this story in 2011 about having sex with a stranger and there is a new verse to this classic song. The guy is in a hospital dying from AIDS and sings
I got AIDS in my chevy van and thats not right with me. LOL!!!!!
Everytime I hear this song, I'm reminding of a girl I dated back in 1972. I had a van back then and we used it for reasons other than driving! I still see her once in a while, we are both 60 now.. great memories last a lifetime..
i was born in the mid 80s..well 86 to be exact, but im more into older music from like 60-the late 80;s..some newer stuff as long as its country...im always telling my mom its too bad i wasnt born in the 60s cuz its my favorite decade..
oh thx so much, takes be back to the day when you could leave your car unlocked the top down, the keys in it. the door unlocked, sleep on the porch and no one would bother you.
@catsenround But now...............leave your keys inside, the doors lock,in bed a sleep,an be woken up to someone next to you,car gone an cat missing...cruel place it is now..
@semkobenko Well you better be thankful for them 'cuz how the hell do you think you got here??? I mean if your gay...so what, you don't have to hate c**ts
@veronicanbetty69 Me too. I was 16 approaching 17 when this song came out ... wanna go back too ... will go with you when you figure out how to get there ... and, yes, veronica and betty sure were fine in '69.
@zicofuss44 I'm right there with you, born in 1966. I never forgot this wonderful music, feel very lucky my older brother and sister shared it with me as I was growing up.
I grew up in a small town like that in eastern Colorado. There were a few girls with long, tanned legs. I think I was a junior in high school, jamming to this song on the way to football practice and thinking a lot about long, tanned legs.
At least I can still listen to good music when I want to. I am 54 and hope I can listen to this when I am 84. Good music on the radio is getting harder and harder to find. I feel sorry for kids today for whom rap music will be their "oldies."
@avdreader1 I'll be 54 in 3 weeks. Also love this music. My brother got me to check out radio.com, and then Chevron radio on it, and you can choose a specific year you want to listen to. I'm always listening to 70's years that songs like this came out in.
Best time of my life, 1970s, 10 years old and life was simple, lots of kid, out side playing pick up baseball, rideing bikes down to the candy store and filling a bag for lest a couple of dimes.Send me back now.

I miss those days...innocence..fun...just watching Russ and wondering if I could ever be that cool.

"I put her out in a town that was so small
you could throw a rock from end to end."
I grew up in a small town like that in eastern Colorado. There were a few girls with long, tanned legs. I think I was a junior in high school, jamming to this song on the way to football practice and thinking a lot about long, tanned legs.

mishamine 3 months ago
At least I can still listen to good music when I want to. I am 54 and hope I can listen to this when I am 84. Good music on the radio is getting harder and harder to find. I feel sorry for kids today for whom rap music will be their "oldies."
avdreader1 3 months ago
@avdreader1 I'll be 54 in 3 weeks. Also love this music. My brother got me to check out radio.com, and then Chevron radio on it, and you can choose a specific year you want to listen to. I'm always listening to 70's years that songs like this came out in.
