For the greater weight of the kayak I would suggest you beef up the diameter of the pulley axles to 12mm (1/2") wood dowel or, alternatively use 6mm (1/4") or bigger steel bolts. Also if you do use wooden axles lubricate them with a little candle wax to ensure free running.
@dalecalder2003 Thanks for your comment - as for mass production, I'm hoping more for 'mass manufacture' (made by everyone, for their own use). Looking at your hoop house I'm sure you'd be able to make one. As a matter of fact you could rig one up in it as extra space for seed trays - go to it!
