This is devestating.. The intense grateful dead energy doesn't always come through even on the best recordings.. You can hear it and feel it, the energy that builds through the song is unbelievable for me especially near the end, Garcia and the band soloing and the crowd is just freaking. Thanks.
Hey Now, I was at this show and thought this was the highlight of the whole run...even the mini-solos are truly inspired (main solo is hair-raising!). If you like the intensity of this version, you've got to listen to the Jack Straw from September '87 from Providence, RI (9/9, I think)...one blistering, mind-bending solo! (second only to Syracuse '84, imo). The best Althea I've ever heard is still Denver summer '81 (7/14/81). Go to the archive for high sound quality versions...Peace, Harper
I hope people realize and appreciate that after Jerry's "coma" episode, the poor fuckin guy had to basically re-teach himself to play guitar over again... he had forgotten alot/most of what he had learned over the years. This is a documented fact (read Phil's book).
There will never be another Jerry Garcia, and the World is a sadder, less happy place without his licks playing somewhere in the background.... pulling you closer to the stage, and the limits of your mind.... :-)
I'm currently reading "Garcia-an American Life" and it just hurts to read about how very sick this brilliant man was for a time.
I just finished the part about his delirium before he collapsed into a coma...
Seems like was he craving so much sugar and junk food due to the H that his blood sugar/insulin balance went off a cliff. Scary-my Aunt is a diabetic & I've seen her get the 1,000 mile stare-I can see it coming now, in case other folks are going to crash.
I was at the show--standing about three or four people form the stage right in front of Jerry--was dancin with a couple of ladies from Amherst--mighty fine. I remember telling some friends that Jerry picked up his feet! He must be feeling good!
Palofoot are you talking about the Shonesy that had the all you can eat breakfast buffet that was proabblay our 1 meall of the day because we needed our money for oither things besides food.
Just one of their many beautiful songs. Honest to the point of recklessness!! These lyrics hit home in alot of ways to me and I'm sure many, many others!!!
...better than the Hampton '86 version, ha ha.....I was standing up front for that set, luckily.....watching Jerry forget the words and picking them up from some Head shouting them really loud right in front of him.....I shot a roll in my ancient Nikon that night....used all the film up before the last song, phooey....

Thank you so much for this, I was at this show probably about 30 feet above the camera. It was like being there all over again!

At about the 6:00 mark, Jerry's tearing it up and looking at the rest of the band like, "yea, I still got it, boys..."

Great memories - remember the pancake house across the street from the hotels? Flooded with hungry, strung-out smelly Deadheads! Good times...
