Sheikh Ibn Taymiyya (ra) was exact in the same position (when Damascus was invaded by 'Muslim' Tartars) as Imam Ali (ra)...both of their enemies were ''Muslims'. The people of Kufa left Ali (ra) because Amr and Muawwiya placed Quran on banners. Imam Ibn Taymiyya refers to that point. What a great man, he was, just like his salaf Imam Ali. i thought that was ibn taymiyyah (ra)? that is impossible though, as imam nawawi (ra) died during ibn taymiyyah's (ra) lifetime.

the learned brothers in my area were unaware of this as well. it could be possible but nobody has heard about it before. i have seen lists of ibn taymiyyah's (ra) shuyookh and imam nawawi (ra) was not included amongst them. however, this list may not have been comprehensive.

Taqī ad-Dīn Abu 'l-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥalīm ibn ʿAbd as-Salām Ibn Taymiya al-Ḥarrānī is Shaykhul Islam Akhi. The teacher of Ibnu Qayyim al-jawzi and Ibn Kathir (rahimahumullah) and the author of Al-Aqidat al Wassitiya.

@AlMamluk - Ibn Taymiyyah was 15 when An-Nawawi died, so it's unlikely they met. Allah knows best.
