It's also used for aerial moves, so for example you can do a back air while moving forward and keeping all your speed. If you used the control stick to do a back air you'd lose momentum, and the pros have to use the C stick to avoid getting "punished" after a combo.

Though Tang is actually from NorCal, and SmashWiki shows that at the time he may not have been ranked top 5, but he was in top 10 in NorCal. So yes, the proof is in the rankings, written by top players from the region, that Tang is a very great player. One great example of his skill is the Wombo Combo video, along with SS who was #3 at the time
