  • well.. sarong is a common clothes in the past of indonesian culture.. it's like using anything usual to be an extremely dangerous weapon.

  • @nikonxxx -- Your typing in a comment under a fake nickname against a man who actually puts himself out there with full name is "gay shit." Ron Balicki is a world class martial artist; a man with full "black belt" level instructor ranking in VARIOUS martial arts. He has also competed in full-contact MMA matches and I can guarantee that he has ALSO trained with pistols and is probably a far better shot than you. Moron.

  • I honestly don't understand why I would use the shoulder sash in a real fight. But I guess it's also about learning the culture and keeping the culture alive. If we stripe everything away to only what is effective for our culture they we'd lose a lot of history.

  • @jjhaywood I first started to learn this from Guro Dan Inosanto. I was not a big fan about it. I started to change my mind. I felt it started making me tighter with my empty hands. Also, it is one of the few weapons I can walk on to a plane with. It's better than fingernails.

  • @jjhaywood

Sarung is part of traditional Pencak Silat attire, and it's there for a reason. During the Dutch rule in Indonesia, Silat & metal weapons were banned, so the fighters fashioned it as substitute, carry it around using it like belt/rope to attack n lock enemy.

The fact that it was also a very common accessory at the time make it easier to fool the Dutch. They said it was for protection against mosquitoes, heat, and night breeze. U can cover Ur whole body with it if it's large enough.

  • @jjhaywood The sarong tekniks in a modern world can be applied to a shoulder bag for girls..or a messenger type bag for guys. You could use the same moves with the strap of the bag over ur shoulder. Or even with a gym type duffle bag worn arcross ur chest. Or in winter places..use a scarf.

  • @jjhaywood because in reality anything over your shoulder can act in the same way. A backpack, a purse, etc.

  • fighting with sarong??? in nusantara we called it cindai...very exotic r u practising Seni silat cimandee muda???

  • @aimullah86 I trained for a short while in the town of Cimandee while I was in Indonesia..

  • After watching this video, I have to apologize for saying the other one sucked Ron. This one by FAR takes the cake on suckatude! LOL....just wow!!

  • @stimp01 Cedric,

I am not going to get into this with you. One thing I have learned over the years is that there is much more to being a martial arts master than simply being a tough guy, a thug, or winning in the ring. Humility, decency, honor, respect, these are the values I teach my students,

  • @Ronbalicki @stimp01 the values taught to me by my teachers, and the values you clearly lack. I don't always agree with other martial artists, nor do I always like the material they create. But I'm always respectful and treat them as I wish to be treated. My record speaks for itself so I have no need to suffer fools. So, it's time to stop this and grow up.

    Regards

  • @stimp01

Why do people continually insist on writing things here, that they would not dare say to someones face? It is a serious flaw in the nature of people these days, not so different then road rage. Why not learn some manners, and if you have something you feel you want to say, then do so with dignity. Ron, I think its a pretty decent video actually. And I think I can say so being that I have been training Martial Arts for 17 odd years! Keep up the good work:)

  • @davetheboy187 Thank you! Much appreciated.

  • @Ronbalicki

My pleasure! I really enjoyed going through some of your clips. I love Martial Arts so much:)

  • Master Balicki, Thank you for spreading effective means of self-defense. It is a blessing to many. I purchased this DVD and I think it is the most complete I've seen. I'm a Kali Silat practitioner for 7 years now specializing in the Karambit. I have to say you capture the spirit of the art. In the videos you are primarily using a sortof...gold/rust colored sarong. It is beautiful. I was wondering where you purchased it or where I can find one similar online. is it one of cold steel's? thank you

  • that robe thing is gay shit. this guy wouldnt last 5 seconds against my glock 17.

  • @nikonxxx Your looking at a former police officer, I am sure he knows all to well the effectiveness of a glock 17. Grow up and appreciate the artistic value as well as the combative value of flexible weapons. That sarong he is using is a representation of ANY flexible weapon, for instance a nice sturdy leather belt around your waist could be employed as a last ditch defense against a knife, tryi growing up and not being such a pathetic jackass and do a little research into it.

  • excellent stuff-anybody who doubts the practical elements of the above is an idiot-and to those idiots i shall say this- this art-like all great arts follow the principles of physics and there manipulation using leverage-with OR without the sarong (which could just as easily be replaced by a coat or a tie!) yet again another great vid posted by the highly skilled Mr Balicki.

  • its like an awesome nunchuku! This would be so effective on the street, you could use shirts and stuff. especially scarfs (seeing as it is winter in my city)

Keep up the work Sifu Balicki!

  • This is some cool silat I see so many different training styles some of which I personally would not like to train in but this is the kind of effective yet flowing style. Is this just regular Penkat Silat

  • Lol! This is great. I also see that Sifu Ron has the same dislike for motorcycle enthuthiasts as Sifu Paul does!

  • great flow guys

  • Who wears that shit in AMERICA? Anyone walking around lookin like that needs to learn fashion sense before attempting to become a Silat master in AMERICA. Maybe these moves can be used in the gay bar where this sort of apparel is common.

  • Funny thing about people like you is that you are willing to invade someones cyberspace but not their personal space. You and I both know what the outcome would be. This is my recommendation, get out of your Superman PJ's, eat your lucky charms and stop writing letters before your mom finds out.

You're a SISSY, you know it and I know it. My instructor always told me that they only try to tackle the guy who is carrying the ball. So, what you are telling me is that I am doing something right.

  • Man I know that this is old, But it has to be one of the best responses I have seen! I laugh every time I read it!

Id hate to piss you off Guro! LOL

  • @Ronbalicki Thank yOu Ron for all the great stuff you offer.. This guy is just pathetic.. Instead of appreciating the art and beauty of sarong technique, he chooses to bash and insult.

  • @Ronbalicki howabout you stop being an arrogant prick? youre not a martial artist.. you need a few lessons in discipline first

  • @Ronbalicki good one bro just keep on doing what you are doing i love the vid... by the way i train in jkd/kali here in new york with barry cuda yedwabnick .... and the silat motions are no joke........

  • Why would you use the silat nomenclature in your screenname, but ridicule a respected element of silat training?

Surely you recognize the value of sarong techniques as they translate effectively into use of neckscarves, ropes, towels, chains, belts or any other flexible item one can manipulate in such fashion.

    Or...

Maybe improvising and adapting potentially lethal techniques is just too..."gay"...for you.

  • Here. Here. He doesnt have an intelligent repsonse so he decides to insert some imaturish gay bashing crap. Silatmestizzo77, you'rea moron. And again Yes, no one in American wears a sarong, but the techniques can be applied to ropes, belts, chains, wires, and yes even garments. there arew omen who wear scarves. Go back to highschool and get your GED

  • RP1968 lmao well said

  • "Gay Bar". Are you !@@# kidding me. your response to this martial art is a juvenile gay bashing remark? You have got to be kidding me. The Sarong can be subsituted for a belt a towel, a tie etc. Go back to Highschool, Moron and get your GED.

  • Nobody wears a gi either, but there are still great applications for the street. From this video alone, one can see how sarong techniques could easily be adapted for use with towels, scarves etc.

  • silatmestizo77,wow you're really an expert on gay bar apparel so you must be gay....

  • @silatmestizo77 why would you need to dress like that? If you were attacked by someone you couldn't choke them with a shoulder strap. If someone comes at you with a knife you couldn't use a jacket, towel, shirt, or any other other material to defend yourself?

  • @KhorneliusPraxx You couldn't? Really? Why not? I ask because I have used a jacket to defend myself against a razor.. must have been a spoof I guess..

  • @KhorneliusPraxx You'd be surprized how well a towel or shirt works against knives and guns, lol, although I practice in several styles of gong fu, my mate once showed me how to use a sarong, couple weeks later, i was walking around at a nearby beach with my towel in hand, (part 1/2)

  • @KhorneliusPraxx a fella pops up and cocks a gun and asks for my motorbike keys, as gently as possibly i wound up my towel, stepped left, whipped his hand, threw the towel over his neck and told him off, whilst I held him in a towel-choke hold ofcourse :P(part 2/2)

  • @GabbysMyKittyRawr Nice application man!

  • Just bought this DVD =) I look forward to learning this stuff

  • I'd love to learn this someday fantastic 5 stars.

  • panantukin

  • muay thay and wing chun are the best

  • Don't be ignorant

  • Its not the style or system that is the best--Its the individual. If it where up to the style, then everyone would be in that same style then.

  • i think, indonesian pencak silat is the most deadly martial arts in the world specially the real technuiqe.they r not only use weapon, but they r use spirit its call djin.sometimes bullet can not hurt them n they eat glass or oil.thats for real n thats amazing..!!

  • "thats amazing"

That's parlor tricks. Silat is deadly because the art is amazing. It's not because of magical spells.

  • Look into san soo kung fu its very deadly.

  • At first I was thinking about how sarong training is good for training purposes but not for combat, because when would you wear a sarong?

Then I wised up and punched myself in the face for being ignorant, even for a second. A jacket can just as easily substitute for the traditional sarong just as an umbrella or pen can be used as a yantok or blade. I think I'll punch myself again, just to be safe.

  • Dont punch yourself, you are totally right man! There are no stupid questions, just stupid answers

    Peace

  • Which makes more money Silat or JKD, whoooops, sorRy, I meant to say which is better Silat or JKD?

  • If you want to make money, get into religion, not martial art.

  • Depends on the practictioner

  • "Which makes more money Silat or JKD"

Someone who wanted to make money right now would be promoting military combatives. JKD is 5 years out of its fad. Even BJJ seems to be slowing down a little bit-- that's just in the public perception of course, and they know nothing...

  • haha, silat ngan sarong...

  • Sweet Moves I think I will get that dvd now!!!

  • This is an awesome dvd set, goes well with the filipino boxing set. Great work Guro Ron.

  • Robert

Nagyon jó ez a Maphilindo Silat, tetszik. Dan Inosanto a legnagyobb!

  • Great video! The Inosanto silat system is the best what ever seen before. Very effective! I wish I can learn the Maphilindo Silat.

    Robert Szabo

  • Great video series! Highly recommend it. The style that Guro Ron is teaching is taken from "Maphilindo Silat." This is Guro Dan Inosanto's own hybridization of all his Silat training. Ma is Malaysian, Phil is Philippine, Indo is Indonesian = Ma phil indo Silat. I've tried this on the street. This isn't bs. It does work.

  • lol, I have seen silat but this is ridiculous. I have trained arnis but he combined arnis blocks and counters with silat triping and disabling. Is this a new form of silat?

  • Uh, no, he's Dan Inosanto's son-in-law. Where do you think he got it all?

It's a blend of FMA & Indo MA Sarong/Malong applications.

  • Sifu/Guro Ron,

Great video I have the set and tested some of it out in real life (with a sarong). It realy works. Hope to train with you again next time your in thd Cicago area. Thanks. JJ

  • aliran silat apa ini???what kind of silat style is this???cimande???

  • no i think dan inosanto created a new style of silat. i forgot wuts it called , its starts with a m

  • keren,film ini bagus,saya mau sarong

  • Aku masih simpan sarung waktu aku disunat 23 tahun yg lalu, LOL.

  • Great Video, loved it, very impressive stuff, thanks.

  • I wish I kept that sarong I had in the Philippines. Well, looks like I'll have to get one from cold steel. Never knew it would be such a unique and good weapon and tool.

  • awesome

  • where u get the head gear it looks like a helmet i need one of those

  • It is Fist Gear. They sell a complete suit. You can really go hard without injuring your partner.

  • so wear u got it or wear can u get one

  • nevermind i found it thanks for the info

  • T_T...i know ron balici :D and dan inosanto we go to lounch togheter *-* beautifull day

  • name of song?

  • A student made it for me. As far as I know it has no name.

  • Ron that is an amazing clip, Nice one you are multitalented martial artist. Oh and Happy new year.

  • Couldn't some of the same techniques be used with an army web belt?

  • Yes they can. Anything flexible you can hold in your hands.

  • when you grab the chin and drop, does this break the neck or what? looks deadly

  • It is designed to break the neck.

  • excuse my ignorance, but why the hell would you fight with a sarong? when you are actually moving like you would in a fight th sarong wouldn't stay nice and fix on your shoulder now would it?

  • On a serious note:

The full DVD shows very honest footage. There are times (when sparring)that the technique doesn't quite work and it doesn't go to plan...Ron adapts, flows and kicks ass! He has made this weapon work, and work very effectively. it's also a credit to his honesty that he shows the sparring "warts and all". and he is an even better martial artist for moving and adapting and not just yelling "cut".

    on a not-so-serious note:

    you sir, are a plum

  • yeap thats the instructor skills ,i do the same ,i flow around and trap and destroy my opponent no matter what he throws at me ,thats the beauty of wing chun and kali escrima ..i like Ron ..he is one of the best JKD GUYS I HAVE SEEN

  • Your ignorance is excused! : )

  • Dan Inosanto teaching a 3 hr kali-silat workshop in Irvine, CA this upcoming Wednesday 14th. Super cheap, call in advance ockickboxing

  • I highly recommend training with Guro Dan and Ron if you can catch them in a seminar.. Absolutely the best in the world.. I hear Ron and Diana give a GREAT seminar as well, I plan on attending if they come back to the northeast in the near future..!! Dave

  • cool.. i didnt know he teached indonesian marial arts..i only knew him by teaching jeet kundo or kung fu coz he was bruce lee's student..and was very skillful in arnis..

  • dan inosanto is filipino right?

  • Yes, he is.

  • cool..i don't know he teaches indonesian martial art?.. i only know him by teaching jeet kundo or kung fu...or arnis.. is he still teaching martial arts nowadays?..

  • cool..i didnt know he teached indonesian martial art..i only knew him by teaching jeet kundo or kung fu because he was bruce lee's student..and a master of arnis (filipino martial art)

  • i am looking to learn this very unique art.are there any dvd's or anyone that i could contact?

  • Interesting look at ways to use an article of clothing, worn by either you OR your opponent, for self-defense. Some applications can use a small article, such as a bandanna, as well.

  • I liked how the sarong was used against wearer. When was this video filmed?

  • Hey Ron, Have you ever worked with a scarf - I'm really attracted to sarong work, but I'll never wear one, hahaha. Or maybe a small length of rope. I trained in Chong Tsui Tin and Pan Nam Wing Chun, Also Catch Wrestling and Western Boxing. I've played a lot with the hoobud as well.

  • Yes, I have used the scarf and rope. I don't think I will wear one anytime soon either. I started putting one in my backpack when I fly.

  • My main teacher was Guro Dan Inosanto. I also was taught by Pendekar Herman Suwanda. It is a lot of fun!

  • its so amazing briliant move

  • Excellent skills! A great display of fighting styles, study with the best, do your best, and you become one of the best...
