bought the album 'Salt peter' somewhere in '97 or so, glad i still have it, its got a couple of real good songs on it. Thnx for sharing anyway, and indeed the vid is just right as it is... grtz
It was like 1994, Ruby was touring with Schtum as their opening act, caught them in NYC. Happen to have backstage passes. Leslie walks in the room, scratches her belly and goes "I need a beer" and walked out.

I never got why some friends were into this back in the day, and in 2010 it sounds even worse, pretty much musically worthless, where albums by Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead, Garbage, Curve, etc etc etc still sound fabulous. This is dated, tuneless crap. Plus she looks like she should be the gingivitis spokeswoman. Remember to floss every day, kids!
Good song, but the butch-dyke personna kills it. She should hire a pretty girl 2 pretend 2 sing it or something, since she hates being female so much =) Odd half her songs R about genitals - I guess she has penis envy.
For the interested, her name is Lesley Rankine, and before she came to the states to perform under the moniker Ruby, she sang in a british punk/metal band called Silverfish.
Thanks to the mighty WFNX and an erstwhile DJ by the name of Storm Zebel, this was a CD I was well familiar with and was probably one of the first people ever to purchase it. It's a classic in my mind.
@Phlunkman I didn't get the album until much later (I spotted it in a thrift shop at that point), but I knew this song and "Paraffin" thanks to WFNX too. And I have fond memories of Storm Zebel because the first time I ever won something on the radio and got to hear myself on air was his show.
I swear I was the only one who ever knew this album when I was in high school... whenever I talked about it no one knew what I was talking about. it drove me nuts, lol. still love it.
Hell, I think the poor video quality 'works'. Suits the scuzzy nature of the song, if you'll forgive the expression. Not a criticism - fantastic tune.
this song is the one in my head that still stuck, for some reasons... i just loved the album.... never saw any video-clip, however, as well... there was most definitely no channel that would be passing it in france...
i do miss hearing from that artist though... what is she up to now???
dope song, I've been wondering if I'd ever hear it again. I haven't heard it since I was a kid and caught it on a 411VM skate vid. Anyone remember that video? Aww memories.
This was on MTV when I was in high school...I think 1996? I loved this video, I thought she was so cool. She still is! I'm pretty sure I still have this CD.
Brilliant song. This one got me into Ruby. Salt Peter is one of those albums where every song never gets boring. The second album was great too. If you haven't heard it and you liked the first one, you'll absolutely love it.
I used to live across the street from this band in Seattle on 2nd Avenue NW near Greenlake. Mark always drove a huge Van or little red mercedes and was a nice enough guy. I hardly remember seeing Lesley but I was young at the time (they moved out of Seattle in 2003 I believe)
yep they were great at edinburgh venue, came on very late and no support band lol.. had to walk home 15 miles lol... well worth it! and still great fresh sounding musics to this day! nice one!
check out "Cargo" and "Lamplight" and "Swallow"...all GREAT songs.....Ruby is one of those bands that I love because of their weirdness (kinda like Lene Lovich) but also for Leslie's awesome voice. She has so much energy...she reminds me of PJ Harvey or Patti Smith....Just awesome. (this song makes me boogie in my chair...love love it.)
leslie is bombfuckintastic, not only in her own right, but she's also been in a couple different line ups w/PIGFACE and if someone out there has the stones to knock them, well then your not just retarded, you should be drawn and quartered. P.S.: I've been searching for this song and vid forever, thanx a trillion JuniorBuda
I bought this album (Salt Peter) because I was stoned and they were playing it at the recordstore. I liked most of the stuff on it, I even nabbed me a remix single of this very song. I played it for my buddies at work too. They hated it. I didn't care.

It was a good singer, but i don't understand why some people are still addicted to her. I mean, people grow up.. it was 10-15 years ago. Her fans shouldn't still be teen anymore.
Leslie grown up also... she is probably a mother today, and she stopped playing the bad girl. Her fans should grow up also...
I'm w/ you Retro, this guy obviously thinks less of people who *gasp* still can enjoy Ruby and her CD. I do still enjoy this album and thanks for posting it here! Guess I haven't "grown up" yet because I still like this CD. Oh well.
i agree too. cdebel's like saying we should stop listening to beatles and all other past artists...she should grow up herself and accept the truth that great singers(and their songs) will always be admired. such an idiot.
Thank you SOOO much. I havn't heard this since 1996 or so. On Casette NO DOUBT!!!! I can't find it in any store! :( I like the way she describes an old mans ass stretchin' wide as a battle shit from side to side to side...off her "Salt Peter" album THANX AGAIN!!! ;)
Lesley occasionally gets the computer charged up and wails into it for a few hours...
Then she tends to go to bed and sorta forget about it for a while. She'd be easily persuaded I reckon... If anyone knows how to set up a web-site and wishes to help Lesley get back on her feet- drop me a line!!!
Does anybody know where I may get a physical copy of her album salt pepper?
