    Jeff aka Humbleuker

  • I remember gigging for frogs in Michigan when I was a kid, spent 5 years there and then it was back to California. Great stuff here Jack, a pleasure to find your channel. Mark

  • This is awesome!

  • what key do you play this in? LB

  • It is in 'D'

  • Thank you for posting!

  • I thought they all had 3 or 4 strings. Sure it's a dulcimer?

  • i have an eight string moutain dulcimer, and i still dont understand how to tune it, or wht the common tuning even is, can some one please elaboritly but simply explain this to me, please!

  • Dulcimers generally have 4 strings but only 3 tones. The 2 treble strings are next to each other (closest to you) and are tuned sympathetically. Some players who play fingerstyle (and others) will space all four strings equidistantly, thereby creating 4 tones. Your is probably set up that way, with four tones in four groups of sympathetic strings. Look at your nut and saddle and see how the notches are cut. Most likely tuning is dd dd AA DD, but that would put a lot of tension on the instrument.

  • Ha, I wanna go rope a goat. Seriously man that was sweet. I have a mountain dulcimer under my bed but always used to play old love ballads. Now I gotta go put a little Buddy Holly into it...

  • The Mountain Dulcimer is commonly thought of as a limited instrument die to the diatonic tuning.

Thank you for helping to put that myth to bed.

    Cool Dulci playing, my man!

  • makes me wanna go tip a cow

I'm thinking about learning an instrument as a hobby; I have no experience; I've been looking at the mandolin and the dulcimer; you make it look so easy :)

    and it sounds so good

  • Hey Y2bs, I am so glad that you are looking to music as a hobby. I think the dulcimer is the easiest instrument of all( that I have tried) to learn to play. I hope you do get one and post some videos too.:) :) Thanks you for stopping by and commenting.

    Jack

  • very good stuff, you can tell you love to play. Music is a universal language.

  • Hey Clause, You are right music is universal. Thank you so much.

  • Hey Peter,

Wow!! What a great comment. Thank you so very much. I had to look up the english translation.:) :) :) :)

    Thank you Again.

    Jack

  • I recognized all these old runs! Great job! I want one of those. LOL! :) They look easier than the guitar. Are they?

Sending love & smiles from afar!

    (((Hugs))) to you & yours...

    Paula

  • Hey Paula,

Thank you very much. Yes they are much easier than a guitar, even if you use chords and notes. There are only three string positions unlike the guitar that has six. There is also a number system of tab. So you don't have to be able to read music.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • your very good at this

  • Hi, Jack. Thanks for the tuning info. I may give your boogie a try. I'm married to a fiddler (Scottish, Old Time, Scandinavian music preferences)and he goes along quite well with my dulcimer plunkng, but better to do with similar skilled beginners. Thanks much. Enjoy the holidays. We are seeing friends with 3 new dulcs in Oroville, CA on New Years, so that should be fun! Ginny

  • HI Ginny,

I hope you do give it a try. Its lots of fun. I hope that you all will post some videos someday. I would love to hear you play. I am happy that you are getting together with other players. You are very welcome. I hope for you a very happy new year.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • Jack, this is wonderful! Man, I wish I could play like that. You have a real talent. Its so much fun listening/watching you play!

  • Hey Roafo.

Thank You very much. I think you could play like this you also have real talent. I really enjoy watching you play also.

    Thanks again,

    Jack

  • Hi, Jack. I enjoyed your dulcimer boogie...and thought of tipping a cow, too. Would you please let me know your tuning on the dulcimer? I learned to play 6 months ago from Tish Westman at Tamarack in Beckley, West Virginia. Now, I'm a lonely dulcimer player in Sebastopol, CA (Northern California) and am continuing to learn more. Hpe you post more videos. Thanks alot. Ginny

  • Hey Ginny, Thank you so much. You bet, I am tuned dd a d. I am sorry to hear that you are alone. There are many resources for your continued learning. I intend to post many more of these. You are very welcome.

    Thank You

    Jack

  • Awesome stuff! I was wondering if you could tell me the the length of the space between the frets and the over all length of the finger board? Do you know where the frets would go if you had a fingerboard/ neck the length of 29.5 inchs? Any idea where I could get blue prints to building one?

    Thank you very much!

  • I have tried several times to post my e-mail in this comment but it wont let me. I will send you a personal you tube email. with the info you requested. Thanks for the interest.

    jack

  • Jack, You can write your email like this:

    kerry at gilamountaindulcimers dot com

and it will get the message across.

    This is Kerry! :::smiles:::

  • Hey Kerry,

Thanks for the tip. Are you the famous dulcimer Builder? If so. You build beautiful dulcimers. Thanks Again

    Jack

  • Well, I don't know if I am famous, but, yes, I have been building dulcimers since the mid-1980's! LOL I like your version of Over the Rainbow. Go find yourself on the MySpace Connection link on gilamountaindulcimers dot com. I have tried to find all the mountain dulcimer players that have a MySpace website but I am sure I am missing a few. Wish they'd write......

  • Hey Kerry,

I think you are famous. I found your dulcimers a couple of years ago, When I first started playing. I was really impressed with your creativity. I do have a my space page I will try to find you.

    Thanks again.

    Jack

  • I don't have a MySpace website. I have a page on my Gila Mountain Dulcimers website that lists all the dulcimer people that I could find who have MySpace websites. Let me know your MySpace address and I will add you there!

  • Hey Kerry,

Thanks for the add to your website. I have sent you a you tube personal message.

    Thanks again

    Jack

  • Well, I thought that being a boogie piano player was cool...

Now I have to learn how to play this dulcimer thing.

Great jod mate, I'm going tipping a cow right now (but what does it means?)

  • Thank you, I hope you do get a dulcimer they are allot of fun to play. What is cow tipping? It is a form of entertainment for county folk. Cows sleep standing up. You sneak up on a cow and push it over (tip it over) while it is asleep. I have never been cow tipping but I have heard about it. It was also made famous by the movie Cars. (Tractor tipping) :) :)

    Thanks.

    Jack

  • Thank you for the explanation, very clear. Well then, maybe I'll wait a bit for doing it: first is not that easy to find cows in the canter of Milan, second I'm not that used to deal with those animals. But the first time I see one sleeping...

  • Toooo funny. Great Comment. Have fun. Beee careful.

    Thanks

    Jack

  • we just tipped 7 cows in honor of this video !

    Jack

  • Jack we absolutly loved your playing, where in the world did you come up with this? I must have played it 6 times a day for the past two weeks trying to figure out how you got that beat going there hoss..

    Joe

  • I am so happy that you enjoy this. I was taught to play a basic boogie rhythm on a guitar many years ago by a friend. I could not play it the way he did so eventually I came with a version of my own. It sounds allot like this video. I had to modify it a little to make it work on a dulcimer.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving such a kind comment.

    Take Care,

    Jack
