@Cr0cket20 it looks to me you are using many variety of knots you are doing on vids there! I see some improv knots, prusik knot, truckers hitch, adjustable guy line knot, etc. Yeah, you should up load series knots of vids . It's gets really handy on the go.
@Cr0cket20 80%wool 20%polyester is a very good blanket & the size seems right on the money. but it's not thick for Hobo rides its just a additional throw for indoor. Get a Russian MILL spec blanket. It's THICK & does the job.
@MrBushLife Thanks man. It was fun to get out and test the wool blanket thing. I would like to play with the idea more and really discover the strengths and weaknesses. I like the idea, but I don't think it will ever replace a good pack for me.
@Cr0cket20 Your absolutely got a vote here !! nothing beats a good pack. However, it would be great in a car trunk, or boat. Thanks for sharing your vid.. cheers man ;-))
@MrBushLife You never done riding on cargo trains & can't eat beans. I've went to Louisiana & came back.LOL Talk is easy & but actually doing so is TOUGH & That's called Being a MAN.

Damn Crocket, this vid totally took away the image in my head of you whimpering in the corner of your bedroom sucking your thumb after a few long sleepless nights watching the new babies. LOL!
AWESOME vid!! loved it!!! fun and low cost packing technique... It's cool to see someone who's gear is squared all the way... i'm gonna try it out on my next dayhike, I gotta figure out a way to protect that wool from the heavy blizzard and snow (yep; Northern Quebec) ... a small tarp maybe?
Finally, someone who knows how to run a tarp/rope! Nice tension system there, I'm an arborist... most of my backpacking buddies make tarps and ropes a one time use system... Love it crocket!
Dude, nice! All that last shot needed was explosions. Also, I think it's time you changed your name to B4c0n20. ;)
In all seriousness, that was a very cool exploration showing how something as useful as a wool blanket can work in the role of a pack. The more uses an item has, the more value it has in survival situations.
Great vid Cr0cket. Makes me even more excited to start my series every time I see another one of yours. Thanks for the inspiration to get my Canadian Adventure channel up and going, although it will be a bit longer. I just wanna ask you one more thing, Who does your music? Regards from Alberta, Canada.
i have seen the wool blanket method used many times and have used it myself but find myself wrapping it all up with my tarp on the outside to protect my wool blanket and to keep the contents dry
@Bornwithnofear I've thought of that too. Although haven't tried it yet. One thing I don't like about the wool blankets is they act like velcro to all the weeds/twigs etc. Tarp would help protect that.
Love this video...especially the part where you you made the knots to hang the tarp. What kind of knots are they, and can you demonstrate how to do them in a separate video? No doubt it will come in very handy and useful for folks outdoor. Thanks!
Where and what kinda tarp? I has used the cheap Walmart tarps in warm weather. Is your effective vs rain? I have seen more expensive ones with reflector on one side. Set up low with fire and fire reflector I have heard you can stay quite warm. Any experience here? Thanks keep shooting.
@frosty0419 Sounds like we're using similar tarps. I've thought about buying a more expensive one for some time. I kinda like having a tarp just to beat and put close to the fire and not worry about. My brother and I just set up the tarp in an A frame manner near a fire during a winter overnight. It really helped keep the warmth in. Not sure I would sleep under it during the winter, but it was nice to hang around the fire with.
Sweet video! Nice editing! I noticed your comment about seeing a bald eagle and have to agree! Seeing wildlife up close and personal is amazing! The sights, smells, tastes (fire bacon) and being able to say "that was a good time" makes all the outings worth every second. I saw a Golden Eagle grab a rabbit on my last day hike and I will never forget it, simply amazing! Your videos remind us all to take our time and enjoy the outdoors, keep it up...............or we will punch you in your ribz!
Great vid Crocket. Have you ever thought about using a Yukon Pack? Also I wanted to pick your brain. I'm looking into upgrading my knife but I don't know a lot about them. @Cr0cket20 This is one of the best edited video's I've seen on YouTube pertaining to wilderness excursions. I'm a teacher of Video Production and I think I'm going to show my students this video and how well it has been taped and edited. Great Job!
@aesierra7 Couldn't agree more, it's not just the editing that is excellent but the angles and fields of view that make it for me. That last sequence with the walk was pure awesome.
Crocket I hope you're going to include all these knots in your explanation vid at some point!
see this is oldschool right here guys my grandfather tought me how to do this when i was a lil tyke lol but not as cumfy or wtvr as a modern hyking pack but it gets it job done
@06XTOR For me, my tarp/bivy setup is much more cost effective than a tent of the same weight (this mostly because my tarp is a cheap $8 tarp). Also, a tarp and bivy can fit in many more places than a tent can (this has been a problem in many cases). Having said that, I enjoy my tent very much and have no plans on getting rid of it. Tarp/Bivy vs tent...depends on the trip I'm planning. Great question.

Awesome video displaying the many examples of knots. You said you were going to make a vid on this subject and this was a good intro. Impressive. Knots are my biggest frustration and this inspires me watching someone conquer the fear and manage it.
Great video! Well done! You are true master of many crafts. I always enjoy seeing a new video of yours pop up on my sub list. Keep up the good work buddy!
Hey Crocket20 was that your RAT 7 that you carved the tarp stake with? Also I agree with n2h20, I would totally watch knot video's if you made them. It's been a LONG time since scouts and I'm afraid I've forgotten most everything about knots lol. Very cool vid by the way, makes me crave to be in the more wild of places once again.
Very nice. Everything that was needed rolled up in a wool blanket. Liked watching the knits being done. I can tie a knot correctly and the first I do is right. Next one maybe try to do and then try again, maybe three time before it's rights. Always like the fire starting. The fire starter my nightmare until you suggested Vaseline cotton balls. What did you use to star this fire. Great bid again and have a great day c
Awesome vid Crocket- first time commenter, long time subscriber...working in the adventure outfitting business I notice a lot of people getting caught up in the brands and the hype of new gear technology. It's nice to see someone out there for the right reasons- freedom, not fashion!
@tdolan121 Thanks for the comment. Ya, I like to have good gear, but for me the bottom line is getting out and just enjoying the experience. Just the other day I went out. The thing I remember most about the trip was the bald eagle perched in the tree. As we got closer it took off and flew over us over a beautiful mountain lake.
@CampfireTalk It was really a short hike. I wanted to test the wool blanket pack and work on skills more than hike. Nice to mix it up like that every once in a while.
Well made video, Crock. Obviously, you've generated a lot of interest for your knot-tying ability and general outdoor awesomeness! I imagine the the notched stick (if much longer) would have been used as a pot hanger over the fire? Very nice techniques, loved the old-school rope-&-wool-blanket approach. Some knot tying classes would be a good thing! Take care, my friend.
@sabr686 bingo on the notched stick. I just got done filming several knot videos yesterday. Harder than I thought. It was tough to get a good first person view of tying the knot so it would make sense. I'm getting excited to release those vids.
@Cr0cket20 Doing knots "on purpose" is kind of like trying to teach somebody how to do up a tie: if you have to think about it, it gets a little muddled! I await your future knots vids with pleasure, my friend.
Please teach me to tie knots like you! Also what was the notch you carved in that stick for? I thought you had made a bottle opener and were about to crack open a cold one!
@An0nEeMouse One of the things I've used it for in the past is to create a pot hanger to go over the fire. Just imagine putting the wire part of the pot in the carved out section. Using another stick situated correctly, one can hang the pot hanger stick from it and then the pot from the carved out stick. Hard to explain but you get the idea.
BACON!!! Bacon, Bacon, Bacon!!!!!! I could almost smell that through my monitor! YUMMY!!
So, when you go out for a, let's say, 6 mile hike. How many miles do you actually hike? Move ahead, set up the camera, hike back, hike into frame. Set up camera, hike out of frame, hike back to pick up camera. Oh ya, and jumping the creek three times in the process. LOL!
@lostburro Haha that's what it is too. If I"m going on longer hikes and loaded down I won't do so much of that. This was a very short lightweight trip so it was much easier to get those type of shots.
@Ziva4Freedom Ziva, how are you? Nah, I was just out learning and trying the wool blanket pack for the first time. This was a learning/practicing of outdoor skills. Good time for sure though.
DAMN! Check out Crocket with the nice music and snazzy editing skillz! If i didn't know any better I would think I was watching a lengthy commercial for the new Nat Geo Outdoor adventure series, starring "Crocket - The Man, The Myth, The legend"... Sign me up brotha! Stay safe! -Tim
Sweet! Simple, cheap, and it looks like you had fun. Well it had to be fun you had bacon ;)
Thanks for another video. Hope you can get back out soon and often. Just keep taking us along(please) Love your vids they make me yearn for the mountains. They are far from where I live. Seeing you out there is as close as I can get. So thanks so much!

@CampfireTalk It was really a short hike. I wanted to test the wool blanket pack and work on skills more than hike. Nice to mix it up like that every once in a while.

Man what a great video. Looks like a very productive day outside and I love the minimalist carry system. Mmm... bacon.

Cr0cket20 1 month ago
@Cr0cket20 Doing knots "on purpose" is kind of like trying to teach somebody how to do up a tie: if you have to think about it, it gets a little muddled! I await your future knots vids with pleasure, my friend.

Please teach me to tie knots like you! Also what was the notch you carved in that stick for? I thought you had made a bottle opener and were about to crack open a cold one!
An0nEeMouse 1 month ago

LOL!
(The bacon would make it all worthwhile though!)
lostburro 1 month ago
@lostburro Haha that's what it is too. If I"m going on longer hikes and loaded down I won't do so much of that. This was a very short lightweight trip so it was much easier to get those type of shots.

@Ziva4Freedom Ziva, how are you? Nah, I was just out learning and trying the wool blanket pack for the first time. This was a learning/practicing of outdoor skills. Good time for sure though.
