Isnt this piece glorified above reason?? Because 'indeterminacy' isnt new to music, yet when it becomes a fashion like collages, it suddenly gains more attention than what it deserves. And Im not saying its crap, Im saying that other klavierstucks are comparable but none are as famous as this one because this one has a gimmick which happened to be present since centuries but became a trend in some decades.
@John11inch Is the frequency of interpretations a good way to measure the fame of a piece? Say, his helicopter quartet must be one of his most famous pieces and it isnt played as often as others. Anyways, this piece gets into the highlights of articles and essays very often, mostly those written outside the academic ambit. Its unfair because in large its due only to the apparent resemblance to Choose Your Own Adventure in people's mind...
Is the frequency of interpretation *not* a good way to measure it? What way are you measuring it, and is *that* a good way to measure it? Is your evidence empirical or admittedly and merely perceived? What are you even claiming? Do you honestly think this piece receives more attention than Kontra Punkte, Kreuzspiel, Kontakte, Momente etc? Why is that attention important, how does it correlate to the piece's quality? You answer none of these things. Not that I accept your summary of XI.
When music becomes this complicated and difficult to understand, it becomes a senseless blob of notes. Stockhausen was a genious to come up with this composition but could anyone help me understand WHAT IS GOING ON!!!
Oh shit, I'm sure Stockhausen is rolling over in his grave in that someone named "Magic Dolphin", who apparently makes videos about "Meet the Spartans", doesn't understand his music. What a loss the discontention of your enormous intellect is to him.
Your immediate resort to ad hominem attacks just proves there is nothing artistically defensible about this music. I'll wrap it up with a quote by Debussy: "Beauty must appeal to the senses, must provide us with immediate enjoyment, must impress us or insinuate itself into us without any effort on our part." In other words, I don't care what sort of aleatoric techniques or whatnot were used to compose this. It is music devoid of any emotion or atmosphere. Prove me wrong.
Oh yeah. I'm really going to bother trying to get into a real conversation on youtube, with its 500 character limits and audience comprised mostly of 14 year olds. Maybe I can just quote people! I mean, don't you think I could quote any one of a thousand contemporary composers of musicologists to support my argument?
And by the way, your comment of "this is fucking stupid", with no caps or punctuation, doesn't really scream "intellectual discussion", dipshit.
I find this to be sensuously beautiful - an atmosphere of controlled chaos, tense silences, and complex emotions of capricious, frustrated dialectic, and even, at times, an awkward dance. You are thus proven wrong by Debussy's standard.
However, if "pleasure is the law," then any "proof" in music is entirely subjective. Stockhausen liked his own music, as do I - this is proof enough.
Debussy also had a lot to say about dilettante, armchair critics like yourself.

@edward1369
listen like a child, then like an adult, then like a child again. draw pictures, construct diagrams, free write - whatever helps you.
Then get the sheet music, if it still appeals to you, or read some of Stockhausen's theoretical writings.
Or just enjoy the senseless blobs and constellations until they start to mean something of their own accord.

I think this music is not unusual at all , I've heard this type of arrangement from composers in the 30's.
