Does anyone know of more songs like this that have the original text AND tune delivered from the middleages? This song fascinates me, because I know that this is how it was supposed to be sounding according to a mediaval composer... Most of the old songs were just delivered lyrics only...
Plz react to my post when you know of any songs that are text and lyrics original! Much obliged!
Why should this song be dedicated to (palestinian) victims of war? Von der Vogelweide was clearly pro conquering the Holy Land to free it from "jews and pagans". With pagans he meant muslims.
What twisting men in power do with words, and cause great harm. The Church subtly altered Matthew 28:19 (go make disciples of people of all the nations) to 'go make disciples of all people of the nations' - then used this to justify vicious conquest and slavery of all non-Christians, saying the 2nd Coming would not happen till all Pagans, Jews, were enslaved or killed. Nice earner for the Church as loot came back from Africa, Asia etc. Jews were really reviled as 'murderers of Christ'
Why not dedicate this song to ALL victims of war, oppression, dictatorships etc? And pigs, like 99% of all non-human aniamal life, are a lot more peaceful than us homo warriorius stupidens planetoraptorus
A sad song. I would like to dedicate it to the Palastinian women who raise their children despite poverty and oppression. I would also like to dedicate this song to the Palistinian men who fight to liberate thier families from the Zionist war pigs. May the Palastinian people soon see the day of freedom and prosperity.
It was written in the early 13th C. by Walther von der Vogelweide in Middle High German. Though its subject matter is Palestine and aborted 5th Crusade, it is interesting and unique in that it states in the 11th verse that though Christians, Jews and pagans claim the Holy Land as their inheritance and fight each other in his name, only G-d can choose who is right. Though I do not support any sort of religious war, I think this interesting in the context of the Middle Ages. Glad you liked it.
His criticism of the crusades is not all that surprising. One of his most influential patrons, Friedrich II von Hohenstaufen, was often at odds with The Vatican, and was excommunicated twice. Pope Gregory IX even called him the Antichrist.
Thank you for the comment and addendum. I am a medievalist so I was aware of that but was answering a more general question from someone I know which was part of another conversation. You are correct in that v.d.Vogelweide's criticism is not surprising... still, it is not a view commonly represented in the literature for the period of the first three Crusades. Thanks again.
Unto Ashes is one of those wonderful ensembles which keep getting better with every album.
Projekt was the first goth lable I started buying from (when I started buying goth music). I know that there are videos of other lable members, the most available being Android Lust. Mors Syphilitica had a couple sing-a-long videos, I have no idea what happened to them.

Hi,
don't worry - you're NOT an idiot *g* - even most Germans would not understand the lyrics either. The text is in "Middle High German".
Nû lebe ich mir alrêst werde,
sît mîn sündic ouge sihet
daz hêre lant und ouch die erde,
der man vil der êren gihet.
Nû ist geschehen, des ich dâ bat:
ich bin komen an die stat,
dâ got mennischlîchen trat.
Google should help you for more.

I just got into Projekt about a year ago, and I can't get enough of it. It's possibly my favorite record label.
I didn't even know if anyone on YouTube would have recognized Unto Ashes.

That is one of the things that I love about YouTube!
There is such a diverse range of members that even obscure artists, such as Unto Ashes, can get exposure.=)
