@jrfps You have to remember in most games pipelines they have to be very deliberate about layout of uv maps. You don't just auto generate them that would be a disaster for a games pipeline. so for that reason he mentions the ability to use mapping after the fact. In a film pipeline you might never worry about UV's at all which is fine as long as the rest of your pipeline can handle it.
@OniLinkSword Been trying Mari, and as cool as the ffd bitmap tools are, having to bake your strokes everytime before you rotate the model is a deal breaker. It just makes the program feel really laggy.
I'm doing an art & animation course focusing on 3DS Max & Photoshop. I got sent the Entertainment Creation Suite disk & this was on it. I've been messing around in it & it's pretty simple so far. I''ve started to create a sculpt of a head which looks pretty good so far (IMO).

@DisturbedCreations02 Max/Maya is were you are going to build your base models. Mudbox is a "port" of real life sculpting mechanics made digital to help improve the modeling process. Though generally, High poly models in Mudbox are used for porting out a whole bunch of texture maps. I am currently working on a model of an FN SCAR and plan on porting it over to Mudbox and delving into some texturing. It is always good too know as much as possible...
@DisturbedCreations02@DisturbedCreations02 and if your interested in getting into the industry, the more programs you know how to use, the better. Although I plan on specializing in the modeling, I still want to be able to texture, animate, and play with special effects. Your head looks pretty cool btw. I've had no professional education in animation but, if you like, you can see some of my models on my web page.
@DisturbedCreations02 If you're good and can produce awesome portfolio pieces, the software you chose to work in is your choice. As far as industry trends go, don't worry about them... things are constantly evolving, you will always be learning new software and working methods. If you get hired by a company that values your talent, they will train you to work in their specific pipeline...
How do I know? I'm going through that exact scenario right now.
It's an awesome software.

"bake ptex into UV space once UVs have been created"
once UVs have been created?
people want ptex simply to not have to create uvs!!!
Seriously ptex on mudbox is useless.
3D COAT bake ptex on object without uv and Automaticly creates the uv!

@Whinestee LoL. That's true, Mudbox is less than half the price of Mari and it includes sculpting.

Is it a good idea to learn Mudbox & 3ds max?

@DisturbedCreations02 If you can i think Zbrush is a slightly better program than Mudbox
TheQuietPotato 7 months ago
@TheQuietPotato Generally the consensus is Zbrush is better for sculpting Mudbox is better for painting textures.
The real differences is the work flows and interface.
