Best version of this song. Really big in Boston in 54. TriLads had a big version here also in Boston on Bullseye records in 1959. Then of course Skip & Flip in 1960 had the only billboard top 40 hit of this song. It went to #11. I imagine that Marvin & Johnny must have been really high on the R&B charts in 54.
I think I have what I believe to be the master recording of this song. It is the same diameter as a regular 45 rpm but is made of metal. There are two holes, one small as in a 78 rpm, and another hole off to the side the same diameter. it sounds exactly like the original, so I know it could not have been recorded via speaker to mike or dubbed in some way. Does anyone have any thoughts on this.
Wow what memories......I remember dancing at my prom YEARS ago to this song! They just don't make music like this anymore. Thanks for this GREAT POST,,,,,,what heart and soul!!!!!
never had any idea that George Carlin was so into the various musical groups of the early 50's. Loved the way George sang cherry pie on A. Halls show back in 1989. Very talented!!!!
Love this song! I sang it in a talent show when I was in high school. Kind of "naughty," though not blantantly so. At that time, I had heard only this version, and not the Skip and Flip.
Just watched George Carlin's ad lib rendition on the Arsenio Hall show. Carlin was unbelievably good. Who knew? What a great tribute to Marvin and Johnny by Carlin!
Reminds me of a cousin of mine and his low rider bomba back in L.A. it had big white walls, suicide doors, and the nicest color of green metal flakes I've ever seen!!!R.I.P. to my primo "Blinky".

There is one word that describes the difference between Skip & Flip's version and Marvin and Johnny's version. That word is; SOUL

So I'm guessing you think that the soul makes it better?
