Thank you so much bro! This is just what I needed to see, I'm starting my senior year pole vaulting season and my goal is to jump at least 14'and right now i'm at 11'9'' so i'll work my ass off to achieve my goals just like you did! and congrats!!
@DaDannyBoy123 This is so inspirational to me. I'm just like you i'm not very good but I want to be. nobody believe in me. I want to be like you. Can you tell m what you did by yourself to get better ?
I'd like to think i wouldve been a great vaulter...sadly even though im in college track, ive not once had a pole vault coach...pretty much had to teach myself, only to clear 12' :(...and my college doesnt even have a track...
Good video but its way easier to clear 14' with a 15' pole!! i could clear it with a 15' pole! he should try it with a smaller pole and see if he can do it!
@MrDeltaMaster im just saying its easier to vault 14' with 15' pole! it takes more skill with a shorter pole because you have to have a better swing up and go more vertical. and most coaches don't start there vaulters off with a 14' pole normally its a shorter pole like 12' 6".
@PandaBear3636 when competing, you dont make it more challenging for yourself...if its easier with a longer pole, you use it...hes not trying to make it difficult, hes trying to reach his goal
Very impressive! I have a lot of respect for that! 14 in one season is unbelievable! I went 11'6 as a freshman and am going 12'6 as a sophomore now. I've been getting sort of discouraged because I flew over 12'6 in conference and was close to 13 and now when i've come back out to practice my vault feels weird, i'm not finishing and just not doing what I did during that meet. But this is very inspiring (:
sorry i keep creeping but i wanted to say that this week i PR'ed at 9'6'' and i think of this video every time im about to go ! thank you so much for the inspiration :)
and to the dude that thinks its bullshit it aint 14 look at the judges sign that tells the height it says 14 and as he said his pole is a 14 6 long pole and look at the top of the pole in correation to the bar there about level which shows it 14 alone on that because a 14 6 pole is normally about 14 8 long and the box goes in the ground about 7 inches equaling the pole is 14 1 long from the ground at which the measurement is taken for the bar
this guy is truthful in that you set goals and jus work hard and your effort you put forth will show , i was always the firs out on the track and the last to ever leave and it works out , ..... and best way to work on a swing is to do a short run and try to swing past your shoulders and over emphasize the swing or get a high bar "pull up bar" and immitate the swing ABS are key ab work helps alot and FLEXIBILITY i strongly dont sugest tring to swing like kikng a foot ball its nthng like that
you highschoolers goal should be 14' 6'' by your junior year , my frosh year i got 11' then my soph year i got 13 then my junior year i got 14 6 , and i cleared 15 my junior year but the offical said i missed it when in actuality the spotter on the bar moved it and it fell after i cleared it , spotter on the bar was the guy keeping it from falling with a pole because there was a 22mph tail wind, then before senior year got in an accident and only got back to 14 6 then frosh in college 15 3 1/2
@braxtondubois2 ummm why dont you shut up and appreciate the hard work people put into things rather than thinking your cool and bragging, IT WAS HIS FIRST YEAR VAULTING AND HE CLEARED 14' HIGHER THAN YOUR FIRST 2 YEARS SO STFU !
@BRbffNW oh i was impressed with his hard work and by the way i do not believe it was his first year and none the less he cleared 14 with a 15' pole i cleared my 14 6 with a 13' pole and i was just trying to let him know i know what im talking about i have coach a few kids and had them improve by 2 feet in a week and i was impressed that him coaching himself got that far
A good way to get inverted is once you take off you need to swing your feet to the top of the pole up as hard as you can and then move your hands to where they find your ankles (almost like folding in half) and then take the bend from the pole which would slowly be unloading and break down your left arm to the inside, so as you drop your shoulders and move your hips up the pole will shoot you up as you move your hands up your body putting you in an inverted postion. hope this helps :)
This is really inspiring thanks for sharing your video ! you are great. this is my first year vaulting and i am learning how to bend. bending is hard! :)
that was honestly so adorable ! im a sophomore and i pole vault and this is my second year and i want to beat the school record soooooo bad which is 10'6'' and im usually always vaulting 8'6 and some good attempts at 9. This is so inspiring and motivational to me because i started having my doubts thinking maybe next year ill be able to but this video proves that you can do anything you what when you want to and i think this is so amazing ! I love pole vaulting so much and this is so amazing!
@BRbffNW so just wanted to say that i had a meet today and i PR'ed and cleared 9ft and i watched this yesterday and i wanted my weekly goal to be 9ft and when i was watching i kept looking at your form and i kept saying to myself throw your head back on the runway and it worked ! i had really go attempts at 9'6'' too ! this video is so inspiring and helped me a lot thank you !
very very motivational! i started pole vaulting last year, didnt clear anything. then this year i been starting at 7 feet and im clearing 7'6" my goal is to clear 10' by the end of the season. it ends towards the end of may i think i have time.... especialy after watching this video!
Interesting video...funny captions ...good job though, that should inspire young vaulters...oh and all these haters on here talkin bout what there shooting for...psh what?...talk it oncde you jump it lol
Awesome!! It's my freshman year and I can clear 8' 6'', my goal by the time I'm a senior is to get 14 feet too. Hard work!! This inspired me, thanks!!
great motivational video! last year as a freshman i got 10'6 after 5 weeks of vaulting before breaking my ankle, now im going 12'6 only 3 weeks into my sophmore season! my goal is also 14' but i want it this year!!
How tall are you? You seem kinda really tall, all our vaulter are fairly short, like way under 6 feet, my first year last year i got 10', this year i hope to get at least 12'. And good jobbtws.
great motivational video im a freshman this year and our season just started and im clearing 9'6'' hopefully i can do what you did and work really hard and clear 14 when im a senior in high school
I went 12 my freshman year, Sophomore outdoor is starting. 14 feet here I come. My problem is getting inverted and whipping my trail leg as opposed to balling up. Any great ideas?
Ive only vaulted one season as a freshman. Two weeks ago i was at 10'6" and today i cleared a 14ft with a 13ft pole. My tips are run fast, be as tall as you can, and jump off the ground. I'm sure your coaches have always told you to jump off the ground and i actually started listening. It makes the biggest diference of all.
i never understood the helmet thing. if you are a voulter you should be able to fall on your legs or worst case scenario on the arms or something... otherwise good work! and congrats for 14'(i dont know how high it is around 4.5m?) i'm a voulter too and hard work is the key to jump high! go on with the training and good luck!
you have the same problem as me: you level out once you see the bar, and you are probably blocking the bottom arm. i jumped 11' last year as a sophomore, but i could be a 13' vaulter if i fixed these. anyway, good job man
Good job but you needed to keep your lower arm straight as possible. Also you balled up you want to stay loose and let a pendulem effect take over but good job though i didnt over bend and freshman year got 10'6 and staying late was the key
this movie was seriously the best vaultin video ever!! =D no lie...it really motivates me cuz im goin to college and doing this! and also all the advice said below was pretty awesome too..imma try all the helpful tips! =D
This is a lot like my story but i didn't get mine on tape. My first meet ever in high school as a freshman I jumped 7 feet. But I stayed with it, i studied everything about the vault. I went to camps vaulted after the season was over. Im now a junior and I just won my league meet last week with a height of 14 feet on a 14 foot 180 pole. I weigh 150. I have improved 7 feet in almost three years but im not done yet. My school record is 15'7. Im gonna get it next year.
that was pretty motivational. I really liked it. This is my first yer vaulting, and my big meet is next week. I still haven't consistntly gotten my bottom arm to bend the pole. I think my main obstacle is the fact that I am scared of getting ripped, if i don't do it right. How can I "hit" my bottom arm evry time?...anysuggestions? :)
@palmtreecentral Make a slide box your new best friend. You can go from your full approach and focus solely on getting your arms in good position at the plant without having to worry about getting up in the air.
@palmtreecentral hey man,, i think i can help you, one thing i noticed you saying was you cant get your bottom arm to bend the pole, and you are afraid of getting ripped off the ground. Well the pressure of the pole dose not lie on your bottom arm, it lies on your top arm, your bottom arm is a guid, its your chest and top arm that delivers the force to get u into the pit. Look on neo vault and look up the Brad Walker interview, as well as the Petrov pole vaulting model
@alanray55 To be honest, getting inverted is still my biggest struggle. If you figure out how to get all the way upside down leave another post. As far as the leg swing, imagine you are drop-kicking a football right when you leave the ground. You want to kick that ball so hard you'd fall over.. Give that a try (it worked for me) and let me know how it turns out.
@DaDannyBoy123 Alright thanks for the input. I'll tell you how it goes. I like the way you said, dropkick a football, because that's like what a senior on my team says. He uses metaphors, instead of making it technical. I think it's easier to learn when you put it that way.
@DaDannyBoy123 We have some phone lines near the back of our pit. Our senior vaulter told to try and kick this bird that was up there, so now we just say "kick the bird".
@DaDannyBoy123 getting all the way upside down is all about rocking the shoulders back during the swing,, instead of swinging hard then getting inverted,, swing while rocking the sholders under your body,,, then let the legs out and boom straight upside down.
@alanray55 ok i dont have any of my jumps up but im a jr. jumping 12.6 and my run sucks but i can get inverted and work off the top all day long. now for me im a right handed vaulter so me i keep my left leg as straight as i can and then when taken off i flex my leg and my abs and that makes the whip faster and a big thing is making sure u flex in... other wise the inversion will never happen right
@alanray55 I found that a great drill for getting inverted is to do swing ups, with your split between the lead and trail leg, on some pommel rings, if you have access to them. Pull up bars are also great.
@hosurf808 looks like hes holdhig like 14' 7 " he has to be on a 15 foot pole considering the pole is taller then the bar even with the 8 inch box drop
@Sighkl0ne How much do you weigh? I weigh 160, I'm on a 14' 160lb pole (after I warm up on much smaller poles (13' 140lb). The best advice I can give is 1. RUN. Too many people slow down the last 2-3 steps before they jump 2. Lock your lower arm so your pole is forced to bend
My pr is only 10'6" ( we have had a guy jumping 15'7" and 17'6" and 3 people jumping 12'-13') so I can definitely relate to the feeling of sucking =P
@Sighkl0ne Run like a lion's chasing you and show no mercy. Don't be nice to the box. You gotta have an AGGRESSIVE plant. If you run fast enough and have a decent plant, the pole bend will take care of itself. Just MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT UNDER! Also, don't lock out your left arm, but definitely resist the pole some. I found that resisting a lot more than I had been resulted in a little more pole bend, but more importantly, I can keep everything under control much better.
Well i can really relate to this i have only been doing this for a year and im a junior and i have gone from no highting in a JV meet to getting 3rd in district, my advice take the coaching watch film
Hey i'm not trying to dis you because just by your video you prove that you can vault but the tip you gave raider boy wont help him. if he wants to get higher he needs to increase his speed into a high plant.jumping only takes away from the vault. also keeping your bottom arm straight bends the bar its better to bend the bar using your momentum alone. But dude good job on the 14 footer.
great vid i hav a question when trying to make the pole bend how should i plant i'm 5'5" on a 13 foot pole i'm not used to it our skool doesn't have the money yet to get new poles any advice on what i should do
It's not so much about height as it is about weight and body position. What's your pole's weight rating? If you're 30 pounds under its rating than bending it is going to be hard, but beneficial if you can get on it and get in. The number one thing you have to do is keep your bottom hand completely straight. You want your elbow to be, in essence, locked at the point of contact with the box. You also want jump higher to increase the bend height in the pole. otherwise the plant form is the same
OK didnt see the answer you posted, that's great man in 1 season.
Give us a picture of how you accomplished it with regards to the drills and the hours or days per week, if you don't mind. I'm gonna have my group of kids check this out.....where are you located, what part of the country?
Hey man thanks for giving the vid so much love. My school is in Kaysville UT, about 20 minutes or so north of SLC. I averaged about 3 hours/day at the track Mon-Fri. I mainly did a ton of 4 lefts vaults on a small pole so I could get a bunch of reps without getting tired. I videoed my form then compared it to pros on youtube. (I got a long way to go) I also spent rest time watching others vault, seeing their mistakes, and the products of them. I could then fix my own mistakes based on the result
At practice I definitely didn't spend 3 hours jumping every five minutes. I warmed up every practice with the team, then before I ever got on the runway I warmed up my approach with at least 5 slide box runs from my full 8 lefts. If I could go back and do it all over again one thing I would for sure do is jump less, maybe 2/3 times a week, and run more. I wish I had done the sprinters workout 3/4 times a week so that when I got to a meet, not only would my top form be improved, but I'd be faster
cool, keep it man, you're inspiring other kids to push their limits, guarantee you that.
What year are you, and how's the progress going these days. Holla back with results throughout season so I can have more tools to motivate the youth espescially those who couldn't fathom these type of results before your post.

that was pretty motivational. :)
palmtreecentral 1 year ago
@palmtreecentral Make a slide box your new best friend. You can go from your full approach and focus solely on getting your arms in good position at the plant without having to worry about getting up in the air.
DaDannyBoy123 1 year ago
@palmtreecentral hey man,, i think i can help you, one thing i noticed you saying was you cant get your bottom arm to bend the pole, and you are afraid of getting ripped off the ground. Well the pressure of the pole dose not lie on your bottom arm, it lies on your top arm, your bottom arm is a guid, its your chest and top arm that delivers the force to get u into the pit. Look on neo vault and look up the Brad Walker interview, as well as the Petrov pole vaulting model
MrMikediggity100 1 year ago
@palmtreecentral you dont want to bend the pole, you want the pole to bend from what you do

I just got the bend down, and my run/plant are good. I just can't get the leg whip and get inverted. Any tips?
alanray55 1 year ago
@alanray55 To be honest, getting inverted is still my biggest struggle. If you figure out how to get all the way upside down leave another post. As far as the leg swing, imagine you are drop-kicking a football right when you leave the ground. You want to kick that ball so hard you'd fall over.. Give that a try (it worked for me) and let me know how it turns out.
DaDannyBoy123 1 year ago
@DaDannyBoy123 Alright thanks for the input. I'll tell you how it goes. I like the way you said, dropkick a football, because that's like what a senior on my team says. He uses metaphors, instead of making it technical. I think it's easier to learn when you put it that way.
alanray55 1 year ago
@DaDannyBoy123 We have some phone lines near the back of our pit. Our senior vaulter told to try and kick this bird that was up there, so now we just say "kick the bird".
alanray55 1 year ago
@DaDannyBoy123 getting all the way upside down is all about rocking the shoulders back during the swing,, instead of swinging hard then getting inverted,, swing while rocking the sholders under your body,,, then let the legs out and boom straight upside down.

@alanray55 ok i dont have any of my jumps up but im a jr. jumping 12.6 and my run sucks but i can get inverted and work off the top all day long. now for me im a right handed vaulter so me i keep my left leg as straight as i can and then when taken off i flex my leg and my abs and that makes the whip faster and a big thing is making sure u flex in... other wise the inversion will never happen right
vamperise 1 year ago
@alanray55 I found that a great drill for getting inverted is to do swing ups, with your split between the lead and trail leg, on some pommel rings, if you have access to them. Pull up bars are also great.

how high did you hold on the 14' jump?
hosurf808 1 year ago
14'6
DaDannyBoy123 1 year ago
@hosurf808 looks like hes holdhig like 14' 7 " he has to be on a 15 foot pole considering the pole is taller then the bar even with the 8 inch box drop

this video is really inspiring, good job!
my pr's only 9' and im a junior, it sucks. last year we had a 14' vaulter then two others who went 12' and i suck.
we dont have a coach, so i can't really learn to bend but i have some questions.
when first learning to bend, what do you reccomend??
I'm really inconsistent with my bend, sometimes i bend and clear 9' by alot but sometimes i straight pole, do you have any tips?
thanks
Sighkl0ne 1 year ago
@Sighkl0ne How much do you weigh? I weigh 160, I'm on a 14' 160lb pole (after I warm up on much smaller poles (13' 140lb). The best advice I can give is 1. RUN. Too many people slow down the last 2-3 steps before they jump 2. Lock your lower arm so your pole is forced to bend
My pr is only 10'6" ( we have had a guy jumping 15'7" and 17'6" and 3 people jumping 12'-13') so I can definitely relate to the feeling of sucking =P

@SimplyJoeboe
I weigh 120 and im on a 12'6 130 pole
I have a pretty decent run up with speed but alot of times when i plant, my back hand slides down and i think its becuase i get jammed at the box.
Occasionally i have a good vault with a nice swing and everything but at other times im inconsistent so idk what it is
Sighkl0ne 1 year ago
@Sighkl0ne Run like a lion's chasing you and show no mercy. Don't be nice to the box. You gotta have an AGGRESSIVE plant. If you run fast enough and have a decent plant, the pole bend will take care of itself. Just MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT UNDER! Also, don't lock out your left arm, but definitely resist the pole some. I found that resisting a lot more than I had been resulted in a little more pole bend, but more importantly, I can keep everything under control much better.
DON'T BE UNDER!

Well i can really relate to this i have only been doing this for a year and im a junior and i have gone from no highting in a JV meet to getting 3rd in district, my advice take the coaching watch film
cspar4 1 year ago
Hey i'm not trying to dis you because just by your video you prove that you can vault but the tip you gave raider boy wont help him. if he wants to get higher he needs to increase his speed into a high plant.jumping only takes away from the vault. also keeping your bottom arm straight bends the bar its better to bend the bar using your momentum alone. But dude good job on the 14 footer.
MrHenryNorman 1 year ago
this was pretty inspiring!
no joke, last indoor I jumped 8'6" just like you, and one year later (almost exactly 365 days) I cleared 14' at the Armory in NYC in december.

great vid i hav a question when trying to make the pole bend how should i plant i'm 5'5" on a 13 foot pole i'm not used to it our skool doesn't have the money yet to get new poles any advice on what i should do
raiderboy2011 2 years ago
It's not so much about height as it is about weight and body position. What's your pole's weight rating? If you're 30 pounds under its rating than bending it is going to be hard, but beneficial if you can get on it and get in. The number one thing you have to do is keep your bottom hand completely straight. You want your elbow to be, in essence, locked at the point of contact with the box. You also want jump higher to increase the bend height in the pole. otherwise the plant form is the same
DaDannyBoy123 2 years ago
thnx. for the advice i am 134 and my pole is a 140lb UCS Sprit i've been working out again thnx. for the advice
raiderboy2011 2 years ago
@DaDannyBoy123 But after your plant you want to break your elbow in toward your body so that your legs can swing up and get you inverted =)
SimplyJoeboe 1 year ago
OK didnt see the answer you posted, that's great man in 1 season.
Give us a picture of how you accomplished it with regards to the drills and the hours or days per week, if you don't mind. I'm gonna have my group of kids check this out.....where are you located, what part of the country?
blainesi 2 years ago
Hey man thanks for giving the vid so much love. My school is in Kaysville UT, about 20 minutes or so north of SLC. I averaged about 3 hours/day at the track Mon-Fri. I mainly did a ton of 4 lefts vaults on a small pole so I could get a bunch of reps without getting tired. I videoed my form then compared it to pros on youtube. (I got a long way to go) I also spent rest time watching others vault, seeing their mistakes, and the products of them. I could then fix my own mistakes based on the result
DaDannyBoy123 2 years ago
At practice I definitely didn't spend 3 hours jumping every five minutes. I warmed up every practice with the team, then before I ever got on the runway I warmed up my approach with at least 5 slide box runs from my full 8 lefts. If I could go back and do it all over again one thing I would for sure do is jump less, maybe 2/3 times a week, and run more. I wish I had done the sprinters workout 3/4 times a week so that when I got to a meet, not only would my top form be improved, but I'd be faster
DaDannyBoy123 2 years ago
cool, keep it man, you're inspiring other kids to push their limits, guarantee you that.
What year are you, and how's the progress going these days. Holla back with results throughout season so I can have more tools to motivate the youth espescially those who couldn't fathom these type of results before your post.
We start in another couple of weeks..
Good Luck
