  • hey man really amazing cover!!, nice teqnique!!!. hey could i ask how much does that bass cost, and also is it possible to get in Canada?

    - thanks man

  • is that an ovation bass (head stock looks like ovation)

  • OH MY GOD!!! I wasn't expecting this cover! Thanks man! You're the best! Perhaps my favourite song.

  • Bien bien! (good Good!!)

  • Awesome tone.

  • Hey It's me again, it's been a while, I've gotten into recording lines, and I was wondering if you use two channels to get your tone, because I really want something similar to yours/myung's on this song. The only thing im have trouble with is getting the right EQ on my mixer and whether or not i use 2 channels, one the colored tone, and the other the natural tone for that extra bottom end boost, and such. your tone is also really tight sounding which is what Im also trying to achieve :P

  • @XanaduMyHome - I keep it pretty simple. Just using 1 channel, maybe a little bass EQ boost if anything. That's it. Nothing special.

  • I have a question: your 5 strings have a C string (first string) like a 6 string, isn`t it? Thanks for sharing this beautiful music and keep showing your many musical skills!!

  • @enantidromia The heavy string it tuned to B, so the bass is BEADG.

  • @enantidromia - Nope. It's standard BEADG.

  • nice.. sounds very clear =)

  • Real nice job! One of my favorite CD's! Found this by mistake actually, but a treat. I'm not a bass player (guitarist), but I appreciate the hours you put into learning this. I thought you were a tad behind the beat up to 1:12 or close to, but from then on you were dead on!

  • Good job. Nice bass

  • watching you makes me wanna play :P

  • Can you tell me what's the length from the G-string saddle to the center line of the bridge pickup??? (measure in milimeters PLEASE) God bless you!!!!

  • dream theater would be better without vocals

  • does not the roundwound strings damage your fretless fretboard ?!

  • @klickBG - It's not fretless.

  • @GBagley rly? i thought that there was just dark inlay lines, last year i managed to convert my cheap 5 string bass into fretless with maple stripes :P check it

  • @klickBG If it's fretless, it's a fingerboard, not a fretboard.

  • good man;-)

  • i like your old version much better :D

  • maaan... its been two years! u___u upload the other part pleasee I want to hear the "Another World" part ):

  • @RandomGuyBlake54 - I am planning on doing the 2nd part at some point. Just haven't had much (or any...) time for new videos lately.

  • Do the Thomas Intelk strings resemble round wound or flat wounds?

  • @XanaduMyHome - They are roundwound strings.

  • because your sound is clean and your view point is great please make a video in which you play panick attack from dream theater

  • what kind of bass is this?

  • @XelaRawksBass ,

    Ken Lawrence custom.

  • nice nice nice

  • Awesome playing. Wish i could afford the badass basses you have.

P.S For some reason the flute sound that comes in at 0:38 or so, reminds me heavily of an old PS1 game called Legend of Dragoon lol

  • Thats a beautiful tone you have on the bass, the low end has got a bit of punch to it, but its not so agressive that it just sounds bad, really nice sound mate and good playing aswell, although this is one DT song that I dont know :) and can I ask what amp you are playing through? :)

  • Why did you change the basslines pickups???

  • At the time, I just really liked the sound that I was hearing from Benavente basses, so I decided to switch the pickups and pre.

  • soooooo good the sound of the bass!

  • No bro, you leave! No le llegas al maestro

  • Just to Comment to say thanks for a great cover i love your low B string sound =)

  • great work. even better this time! awesome

  • cool

    jejeje

    very good

    ammmmm bye xp

    my inglish is very bad

    xS

    ok bye

  • Hey GBagley,

    love your playing!

I have a question though: is this a 34" (longscale) or a 35" (extra longscale a la Lakland) bass? Thank you very much and keep posting these great vids!

  • Thanks. It's a 35" scale bass.

  • Flawless!!

  • Nice tone. what kind of knob tweaking went into that sound?

  • Not much. I don't remember exactly, but usually with this bass I just have a little bass EQ boost and tend to favor the neck pickup a little.

  • Really liked it,

but the sound of your low B isn't really clear.

    Keep rocking, Awesome!!

  • good job dude keep rocken and i wanna ask u what diffrant between fret and frett less bass ?

  • Fretted basses have frets and fretless basses don't! They just have a different feel and sound.

  • How do you record these videos exactley?

  • Video is recorded through my macbook pro's webcam (either in iMovie or Quicktime), and audio is recorded direct through my Mbox2.

  • revelation playing!!! Awsome cool pretty bass guitar

  • yeah good stuff, very clean play, your 10 years playing paid off :)

  • AWESOME

  • hey man when are you doing the second part !!! please do it you are great!!

how many time you've been playing bass??

  • I might not do a 2nd part. Youtube blocked the last Dream Theater playalong that I tried to upload. Copyright issues and all. Oh well. I've been playing about 10 years.

  • Check Metropolis 2000, you will see that actually John plays less notes than you do. Besides that, great player, kudos.

  • Hi from Spain.

Thanks for the videos. One of the best bass covers i've seen. Can't wait for the second part!!!

  • damn i can't wait for the second part!!!

  • I was listening to your tone in this video and I can't help but ask, are you're pickups active or passive??

  • It's switchable from active to passive (push/pull switch on the master volume), but I'm using it in active mode here (I almost always play this bass active).

  • Okay, that is very cool. I would love to have a bass that has that option, but sadly both of my basses don't. Also, would you at all consider covering Dream Theaters song, The Dance of Eternity from their Scenes from a Memory album? From watching your other videos, you definitely have the speed and technique to for the song

  • wat's the diference betwen active and pasive ??

  • Active pickups use a preamp which gives you more tone shaping control (onboard EQ), and they generally have a higher output. They're battery powered as well (usually one or two 9-volts) so you have to change the batteries every once in a while.

  • Actually, the active pickups not necessarily have onboard EQ, active pickups culd have simple, volume-tone controls. Also passive pickups can hace active preamp with EQ. This two options have a single 9-volt battery. When pickups and preamp are active, it has two 9-volt batteries.

Active electronics have more punch and attack than passive, that's the principal difference and almost all the active have EQ, but not necessarily.

  • Man the sound on that bass is perfect. It sounds nice and deep with no buzzing. Does anyone know what model that is and how much it costs?

  • It's a custom made Ken Lawrence bass. Somewhere around 4-grand new, at least.

  • the 5th string is way to silent. that is why i dont like extra-fat 5th bass string. rather to add a skinny one. anyway, nice cover

  • There's not really any volume difference between strings. You might be hearing the B-string less if you're listening through speakers that can't handle the low-end as well. An open B-string has a fundamental of 32hz, which usually can't be fully reproduced through computer speakers.

  • When will you be uploading the next part/parts? I would really like to hear you play the instrumental section.

  • I might not be. The last DT song I tried to upload got blocked by WMG (Warner Music Group) for copyright reasons. I probably won't be doing as many covers like this in the future.

  • Oh man, that's a shame.

  • oh man your covers are great!! keep trying please, I love hearing you playing!!

  • Beautiful man. Even myung would like that. :)

  • O_O WOW...

  • I need the second part!!

the video is great, but don't rest on your laurels... try and correct the defeated phalanx of your left ring finger

  • Songs is awesome but you.... are rox ! ;d

i will change electric guitar for bass ;]

  • love the growly tone =).

amazing playing as allways from you.

thanks for such a great music !

  • oh god!!!!! your great!!!!!

  • wow!great song...good performance

  • the way you play the song isn't correct, but are some details, great bass

  • What is the correct way? couse i can find like 5 different verisions of this song. Kinda hard to know if i play the right way now when i've started training this. Nice played btw :P

  • There is no 'right' way. If it sounds good to you, then it is good! That's what matters :)

  • Great sound!

  • a great choice of song, by a great band, John Myung really has it cut out for bass, great job by the way =]

  • I simply hate Myung because of his f'in long fingers :D I always have problems with some fast parts where you need to play like

    3-4-6-7 frets :/

  • well just play 3-4 on and 1-2 on the higher string :)

  • Well... sometimes its just better (for sound etc.) to not skip strings, and well... I still have some problems with that ;)

  • it's all practice :D

i'm not saying i'm any good at it but i know it takes practice :)

  • Yea good musican is the one who is practicing a lot ;) So, lets practice! :D

  • he made a deal with petrucci. practice at leaast 6 hours a day, wonder why he can do that stuff?

    start practicing

    NOW!

  • His fingers aren't that long, they are just very flexible. He is a small guy at 5'7", like myself. Keep practicing all your exercises and your hands will strengthen and become more flexible with time.

  • This is one of my favorite songs of all time, John Myung's work in the song is awesome.

    Amazing cover btw.

  • awesome playing.

  • well played nice clean tone.

  • Excellent!!! Have you ever tried TI Powerbass strings?

  • Thanks. I haven't tried the Powerbass strings, but only because these strings (the Jazz Rounds) are already perfect for me! I don't feel the need to try out anything else now. Plus, the Powerbass strings are a bit higher tension, and I really love the super low tension of the Jazz Rounds.

  • are u gonn a do a part 2

  • Eventually I will!

  • I love the sound of your Ken Lawerence so much,

you can differentiate between tones so much with it, but you also make em' sound so nice, a true bassists ears you have :]

  • Awesome man, i love this song, what gauge is your low b cuase it sounds awesome.

  • I'm using Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Rounds. The low B is .118, and the E is .89 Super light gauge, but I love these strings!

  • Ever thought about putting distortion on it to see how it would sound?

  • I'm not really into playing with distortion much.

  • distortion really kills bass :(

the natural crunchy sounds of the basses alone is awesome enough i think

  • Cool. Did you transcribe it yourself? Because I usually play it quite differently.

  • Yeah, I transcribed it myself.

  • Nic playing as always. Which of your basses is your "desert island" bass?

  • Well, if there's no amplification on the island, then I'd take my Kinal 6-string Acoustic bass :)

  • Cool, how about if the island had some magic amp, which electric would you choose?

  • This one! 5-string Ken Lawrence, it's my #1 electric bass. I'd love to see a high-end rechargeable battery powered amp, that could be charged with a built in solar-panel. That would be amazing :)

  • I thought you'd say your custom 6. Of course I've never played a ken L, so perhaps I'm missing out. Solar Amp would rock as well, playing with the clean power of nature!

  • The Stambaugh Custom 6-string is gone. I sold it about a month or two ago. GREAT bass, I just decided that I don't need a 6-string electric like that. This Ken Lawrence fits all my 'standard' electric bass needs. Eventually I'll get a full hollowbody 6-string for chordal/jazz kind of stuff, but that's a ways away still...

  • that sounds sweet! never heard the song but i love it. You accenting the bass is cool too.

  • havent u done this song already ut this time its not as technichal

  • I did it before, but I think this one is better played. I did a longer solo bit in the last one, maybe that's what you're thinking of.

  • Nice playing as always. Did you end up selling the Stambaugh after all?

  • Yeah, the Stambaugh is sold. I just don't need 6-string for any of the 'standard' electric bass stuff that I do. My 5-string Ken Lawrence fits that role perfectly. And for the more chordal, jazz stuff that I do, I'll use my 6-string acoustic bass, and eventually I have plans for a 6-string full hollowbody electric bass...but not for a while.
