  • Folks - it's Cleveland, not Atlanta...though I admit it looks like parts of many decaying cities in the US.

  • That's Atlanta aka ATL south side

  • If Cleveland had built subways, and kept up with Chicago or any other major city.. Things that killed Cleveland were. The lack of Hotels thus unable to attract huge conventions. There was only about four (Sheraton,Bond Court,Holiday Inn Lakeside,Cleveland Plaza Hotel *aka Statler office tower. The news would always (during the 70s have developers propose hotels but city codes and bureacracy tangled that one up and companies left (Diamond Shamrock etc).

  • Almost 100,000 thousand people left in a decade. There's no point on building anything new since the demand gets weaker on a yearly basis. The city is slowly returning to nature.

  • FYI - I shot this from a van with the camera resting on a sand bag. The guy in the blue suit thought I was about to gun him down...so now when I do this sort of thing, I always make sure I tape the word "Press" all over the van (the way they do in war zones).

  • @LauraPaglin what city is this?

  • inkey - that is a good question about immigrants. Immigrants often bring with them skills to start new businesses. Often they are entrepreneurs - creating jobs and stimulating the economy. Asian restaurants are an obvious example...

  • Well thank you dogterd (odd name). That's very flattering - but if you put Phillip Glass under anything, it automatically becomes a piece of art. :-). The music was actually used in Errol Morris' documentary "Thin Blue Line".

  • This video is an exceptional piece of art. The music simply has to be Philip Glass. It sounds eerily similar to the soundtrack from "The Fog of War". In that film, Robert S. MacNamara drones on about the logistics of firebombing over sixty cities over a beautiful musical score.

  • @dogterd yeah, I too like the way this was shot........really spooky/creepy yet it draws you in

  • It's Cleveland. And yes - the city has suffered in part because its leaders have not done enough to attract immigrants (among other things).

  • @LauraPaglin what good is it attracting immigrants if ther are no jobs to begin with

  • Which city is this? It's unfortunate because millions of people want to come to the US still and could stimulate things. Furthermore, the social engineers could switch on prosperity in a hot minute if that was the agenda, but instead we get stuck in the left-right paradigm. -"tarotworldtour"

  • where is this place cos i would let my wife go shopping there.

  • This is what the US is coming to. Just like the roman empire fell, the US empire is also crumbling. I bet the romans thought "omg i never thought it would come down to this in my lifetime."

    Really sad.

  • Born in Cleveland in '57, grew up there, left in '75, left the State in '77 for NYC and then France. I was always stricken with a sense of horror and dread in Cleveland. The old family business there failed finally in 2010 after existing since WWII. I offered to get all my relatives out a few years ago to come live in Europe with my sponsorship and they said no, and now they are all desperate and screwed. My mother phoned recently from Lyndhurst and called me a slut. I have cut them off.

  • Somernot - I wish it weren't true - but if you drive out of your little hip enclave (Tremont?) you'll find that streets like these make up a HUGE portions of Cleveland, not to mention East Cleveland and other inner ring suburbs. These are just the ones I happened to film. Granted it's not as bad as Detroit - but nor is it as big.

WorldOfWowcraft. Yes it does have an oddly clean appearance. Though on film and video, things often appear that way.

  • There are dead neighborhoods in every city. I've been to a fair share of cities, big and small, and I live in Cleveland. My neighborhood is a hip and cool area with a lot of great people, places and things to do. And I'm a mile from downtown. I'm not saying that Cleveland is amazing or perfect, but I'm pretty sure I can drive to any city and capture video like this, put "dying puppy" music over top and paint an inaccurate picture. This is an area of Cleveland. It's not Cleveland.

  • @Somernot Good luck with all that.

  • its pretty clean for a dying street.

  • SHIT WE LIVIN FUCKED UP #216

  • What city is it?

  • @scottieman2 This is Cleveland/East Cleveland.

  • @Echaede Wow, really? Sad.

  • cleveland isnt as bad as detroit and besides its only east cleveland thats bad

  • Looks like buffalo

  • dot com

  • Seems YouTube won't let me post a url. So let's try it this way. The website is facingforwardfilm

  • Thank you for your comments. I was actually taking this footage for another film about an urban charter school called "Facing Forward" So bits and pieces of this are used in that film to show what kids have see everyday. It is heartbreaking.

  • Very powerful video. A glimpse of the heart breaking reality for the folks of E. Cleveland. Loss of industry, political corruption, the crack epidemic, and gang culture have really taken their toll on this part of the city (the rust belt in general) I drove through once on a road trip, and never looked back. I'll always remember it though - seeing a young kid walking to school by himself down a vacant block like this, right past a group of obvious drug dealers - his everyday routine.

  • Laura, you did a wonderful job on this video. I did not realize Cleveland had decayed this much. wow..it is sad to see a city in this condition.

  • @cassapollard You should see Detroit, it's even worse... it's full of empty skyscrapers outlined by a complete ghetto, brings tears to the eye.

  • @gillianseed oh, I know YouTube really shows you the contrast of that city. I understand the city's budget is so bad that they can't even afford to have the street lights on at night. that is scary..

  • @ 1:22 The mayor and his wife

  • This is not Euclid Avenue, it's parts of Cedar Ave and some of Clarkwood Rd.

  • This is cleveland, but it looks just like buffalo, detroit, boston, philly, baltimore, washington, new york,chicago,pittsburgh.......... and many more cities. What a waste!

  • @MrThcpcplsd I will give you buffalo and detroit. The thing is the rest of those cities have very vibrant parts. Also the rich in those cities are very rich. I know that does not justify poverty... but it helps. Cleveland is the poorest city in the country. So to have slums this bad and no real wealth to the city makes it even worse. Not to mention crime, shrinking population, weather, poverty, urban decay, happiness ranking, under reporting of murders. Sadly Cleveland is in bad shape

  • @HappierHealthierYou you missed the whole point! I meant it the way I wrote it the first time.

  • @MrThcpcplsd I guess I missed the point, im just saying Overall Cleveland is the worse!

  • @HappierHealthierYou @MrThcpcplsd Every big city has its blight. There are tons of nice areas in the city of Detroit. Rosedale Park, Indian Village, The University District, Boston-Edison, those are just a few neighborhoods. Not to mention having one of the safest downtowns in the country...casinos sports venues etc. Overall, yes, Detroit is not in the best of shape; however, there is an effort to make a comeback. Cleveland and every other city in the area can come back.

  • @SheLookingAtMe Yea I defiantly agree with you, im not talking down, im from cleve and now live in the d. Im just sayin mid west cities are in bad shape man. I dont think people know how bad it is. Dont get me wrong back when the steel industry and the auto industry were booming we were killing it, but now we kind of resemble what other cities were facing the the early 90's in the way of crime and drugs. i used to be casuing some of the trouble, but now im committed to trying to help.

  • From 0:00 - 0:23 is cedar ave and E 43rd

From 0:24 - 0:53 is cedar ave and clarkwood rd

I used google maps to find them. The rest I don't know. Help us out Laura.

  • This looks like a post Apocalyptic society! What would be the name of part two of your videos "The dying nation" because many places are suffering like Cleveland and if these politicians quit talking like your pastors and start acting like responsible economists. Maybe we should summon all politicians to live a life in poverty and not get paid for it too. Then they'll realize how serious this situation really is, and maybe they'll get of their ass and represent the people for a change.

  • If Cleveland doesn't find a way to get back on the growing track, 50 years from now the population of the city's population will decline to under 100,000 inhabitants. it already lost nearly 2/3 of the population within the past 60 years. Mayor Frank Jackson has to find better use and to redevelop the city. That is what the city of Denver did in the past decade. tear some unwanted buildings and make new ones.

  • what streets was he drivin on?

  • Patti - your comment seems to imply you know exactly WHO caused the deterioration. Please elaborate.

  • WHO made it deteriorate like this?? Hmmm?

  • @Patti129able William Jefferson Clinton … NAFTA for short.

  • So your point it that people who vote for democratic leaders and policies actually cause all of these problems? So you're saying that if democrats merely switched parties, we wouldn't have all these problems? Glad it's so simple!

  • Show me a Democrat State and I'll show you Poverty, Unemployment, Foreclosures, Hunger, Crime, Abortions, Racial wars, Homeless, Bankruptcy, Jail population, High Divorce rate, High wedlock births and the list goes on, But they're proud to vote democrat because its the party for the people hmmm

  • this is poor management by the GREED of the government in cleveland. I would LOVE to run for Mayor. I would love to fix this.

  • Boy - I couldn't tell you exactly... But the commercial strips were on Cedar Avenue (somewhere in the 60th -30th block), and Superior Avenue - about the 60th block heading towards East Cleveland... but there were SOOOO many "good" things to film on various side streets, I sort of lost track.

  • Looks like a lot of this was filmed on Euclid Ave in East Cleveland. I've been through East Cleveland a few times but couldn't really look at the buildings. Where is the building @ 2:21?

  • This is Cleveland not Houston (that's the title of the music)

  • I thought Houston was thriving. :(

  • @EconCat88

Not to worry. This is Cleveland , not Houston. The music is "Houston Skyline".

  • This could be the new 'normal' for American cities.

  • the city i live in is starting to look like this
