Gore Vidal is a national treasure...a phrase he would absolutely hate...he is elderly now and a bit fed up with fools I imagine...he does not "look down on everybody"...but rather tries to enlighten everyone with his own knowledge of past events and the history that we don't have written in our history books in school...take note dear people and learn...
Guess what the president (JFK) is the one who was in charge to say go ahead or abort! He said go. That was his responsability. Maybe he had advisors who told him to do it be he could have said no. And if you mean the CIA did it without his authorisation (which is not the case) that would mean, Kennedy was the most pwerless president ever!!!

In addition to a demonstrably unsympathetic personality, Gore Vidal is an ordinary writer and an extraordinary fool. He looks down on everybody. He has no sense of reality. And his talent for political analysis is hardly above that of the average paranoid schizophrenic
That Times thing is a real sore spot with Vidal. I've read his memoir of the period, and he doesn't really explain why they went after him much better than he does here.

Bay of Pigs was given the ok ..by the CIA... and Ike.. gave his ok..of the Bay of Pigs before he left the White House.
