9/11 wouldn't have happened if Nixon and his first vice president would have made it to a second term. They would have stopped the Jews, therefore they had to go.It's sad for US.
There have been countless presidents compared to Hitler. In my life time I've seen countless people equate Clinton, Bush Jnr and Obama with Hitler. But only Nixon out of all 20th century presidents comes even close to Hitler. What a horrible, paranoid mass murderer.
@fistfulofknowledge What a sick human being you are. He saved countless lives, American lives in getting us out of Vietnam. He brought about the first treaty with the Soviet Union while opening up China. He saved Israel from being over ran on Yum Kipper. This man was a leader, a statesman and with all of his faults, a decent human being. You probable were not even born and if you were, you know nothing.
@devilndeepbluesea He put pressure on LBJ to bomb Vietnam , sabotaged peace talks between North and South Vietnam for his own election purposes (promising the South a better deal which never came), illegally wire tapping people, launching an illegal and secretive bombing of Cambodia which killed approx. 1 million people and gave rise to the khmer rouge and his attempts to suspend freedom of speech. He was a leader just like Hitler.
Im a Ron Paul supporter, but I hate hearing Palin criticism. Palin did the same thing as Nixon (who I personally like, not agreeing with any of his policies) minus the scandal.
I remember watching coverage after the speech. The network commentators were treating this as if the President had died in office. Even Dan Rather took a funereal tone. Only Roger Mudd put it in prospective - this was a President who was getting out before he would have, undoubtedly, been impeached and removed. Nixon was getting out before he was thrown out.
I'd like to see more TV coverage from August 8th, 1974, so this speech could be put in context as to what was being reported and commented at the time.
@MidnightGrunt Up yours. He's out of office, leave the guy alone, it's over. Unlike Nixon, he did nothing wrong, he did the best he could without cheating, I swear, you bastards have made me a Republican. He won, Gore lost, he won, Kerry lost, move to Canada, or Cuba, or where ever, and quit complaining.
He resigned during his second term. I wonder if he had decided just to run for one term as president, and so didnt have to reign, would history still view him in a negitive way. Im not american and have no view on his man one way or another, just I just wonder if the need/want to remain in power played a part in his downfall?
@kcirish I think you should read the book A People's History of the United States. It talks about Nixon's first presidency and shows SEVERAL flaws made by him in his first term that have been carried through since.
@kcirish - His need for power and his need/want to remain in power were the exact reasons for his downfall. Every illegal act he committed was for the sole purpose of staying in power and keeping his power. That's all Nixon was about... power. (and maybe a bit of revenge thrown in there)
@1969dpeck Your comment shows how ignorant you are. He could have stayed and fought, but he knew the end results and for that he was a great man. He put the nation first than himself. Hos crime was obstruction, and unlike others, never enriched himself while being in office. I see many of you who judge, were never even born during those times. This man was a great man among men of his day. We sure could use him today.
@devil, I was alive at the time and I watched the entire affair unfold. Yes, he did a lot of great things while in office. He could have been a great man with a great legacy, but for his illegal acts and their cover up. It's true he could have stayed and fought, but it was pretty clear he was going to be charged and convicted not just of obstruction of justice, but also abuse of power and contempt of Congress. Only Nixon knows his real motivation for resigning, neither you nor I do.
@1969dpeck If you are 42 today, you were only 5 years old when it unfolded. I was 11 and remember the day of his resignation. There are no charges for abuse of power, and it was impossible for him to be in contempt of Congress. His only charge was, and would have been for obstruction of justice. That he would have surely been convicted on....
The narrator says "watch the first president of the United States resign his office." Don't you mean "watch the first president of the United States ever to resign his office?" Big difference that those few words make.

Why did you leave out the most famous part of the speech? The part where he actually says he's resigning? Why would you do that?

The irony is watergate was unnecessary. Mondale didn't have a prayer of winning.
