The best way to deal with deniers of evolutionary biology - even after they have truly understood the principles of the discipline and consider the huge amount of evidence - is to simply ignore them, and keep teaching real science in schools.
Oh, you theists and your long since destroyed points.
Just because there's a thing called "the theory of gravity", doesn't mean the phenomenon of gravity isn't a fact. Evolution is a fact. I understand that this particular fact makes you feel uneasy, which is why you're resisting it, but that's just too bad.
In conclusion: grow up, theists. We are apes and we will die. Take it on the chin, you babies.
Evolution is on a minuscule scale, which creates large changes in organism over time. Evolution happens on the DNA level of an organism. Evolution happens to organisms to change and adapt to their environment, to be able to conquer our surrounds.
I find it funny how Creationists find it easier to believe in a God, and not hard evidence proving evolution.
i heard the catholic church accepted evolution as fact.....but of course they said God did it and it's part of his plan. not even surprised. but it's funny they took this long to figure that out....i guess they just couldnt argue back and decided to prey on ignorance.
@mrblacksheep1o1 I believe the line of reasoning is that if humans are not ontologically separate from the animals - if there isn't some vital quality of our origin that separates us from the animals - that we are doomed to follow the same rules of behavior as the animals are. This is true to some extent but, as Dr. Coyne points out, there are many animals that behave admirably toward each other. However, this point of view certainly challenges traditional theology.
It's doesn't unless you think morality is following a set of rules set down by a deity. He's just saying that this is a reason some people have an aversion to the idea that we are just another animal.
@mrblacksheep1o1 It isn't true, and he says that he thinks this opinion is misguided - i suspect because he realizes that morality stems from social group interaction, not from invisible magic beings :)
no, he said that is one of the reasons people resist evolution. I don't think he accepts that premise either, as he describes those people as misguided. If you read or talk to religious people its a complaint they tend to make against atheists and people who accept evolution. I think it tends to levied more against atheists though. He may be an atheist and lumped it in there inadvertently.
@mrblacksheep1o1 he says both of those reasons are misguided, he does not believe, that to be true just that thats one of the reasons people give for why they don't believe in evolution.
@Gandalf54231 i love the kalam and hitler and stalin and paul pott and the cambriam explosion, i get to tell someone for the umpteenth time why those subjects are misguided, stupid, and hilarious....
yup....imagine teaching adultts division everyday of your life and not getting paid for it....awesome....
It is one of the best books I have ever read. However, I think that Evolution Redux chapter is unnecessary as I find it weak especially the arguments on page 251 (hardcover ed. OUP 2009) "about richer nations becoming more aware and of their obligations to help..."
People can only beleive in the theory of evolution, because God has given them the choice, just like he gave Eve. Unfourtnally, no one has ever accepted the love of Christ and went to heaven, and denied God. You don't need to live your life wastefully trying to disprove him. Accept Jesus today!
we believe in evolution like u would believe there is a bear in the woods if u saw his tracks, saw his fur and heard his growling..when evidence piles up, one is more likely to believe..the evidence for evolution is irrefutable..it comes from many fields of science and basically creates a unification of evidence.
@CR100692 or you could not do that and believe in a lie and live a perfectly happy life without fear of gods wrath or eternal damnation. think ill choose to ignore ancient superstitious nonsense.
Let the Creationists be. The claims made by the work of fiction that guides their lives is something they need to make themselves feel better about death. It's sort of like a pacifier in their mouths. They don't need it, but it comforts them because they are too weak to see the truth in front of their own two eyes. I am grateful to finally be able to know how I came to be and where I fit in to the rest of the world and the earth we live on. It's awesome.
Prof Coyne would have to pay a visit to the Federal prison in Edgefield, South Carolina, because that's where Kent Hovind now lives.
After years of shameful deceit and wilful misinformation to young and old, alike, Hovind got his just reward: 10 years incarceration for massive tax fraud. Good riddance!
I could say I hope he's somebody's prison bitch but that wouldn't be very charitable of me, would it!
This guy is instantly puts Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, Dennet, Shubin and so may other logical and well thought-out adversaries of traditional religion in an untenable position...creationism makes NO sense.
Unless you need it to for your personal salvation
there is no "proof" of evolution. period. the only "evidence" is only that we look and act like other species. thats it. theres no fossil records that show otherwise, in fact the fossil records show no slight changes in species over years like youd expect. no missing links either. at all. i see no reason to believe a species can turn into another. DNA is set in stone it cant change. parents give yong their genes, not another species. this guy is LYING
@Hammerfest08 Your whole statement is wrong. Everything you said was not true actually IS true and is proven. Proven. This guy isn't lying, he's reporting what science has PROVEN. DNA has always changed and was never set in stone. Nice try. LOL....
@Hammerfest08 Clearly you are willfully ignorant. DNA can change at the base-pair level through mutations due to radiation, miscopying, and tautomeric substitution. DNA can also change at the chromosomal level through crossing over during metaphase in cell division, both in somatic cells and germ cells (eggs and sperm). Further DNA expression is dynamically regulated and can be suppressed for multiple generations through methylation. I learned all this in Genetics. Go read a book moron.
I believe the earth is round, there seems to be proof of it's roundness on the horizon on a daily basis but not at night , It reminds of the unscientific flat earthers who categorically state "this is it ,the earth is flat, fact", can't challenge it, end of argument
I believe there´s evolution. It seems to be proof of it wherever you look, even on the daily basis rutines. But I don´t find it very scientific to say "this is it, a fact, cant challenge it". It reminds me the attitude environmentalists have to end any discussion and use force on others...
If you can challenge it, then you should. That's the point of scientific theory. Statistics prove that the evidence FOR evolution is greater than the evidence against it, of which there is none. Coyne isn't saying that there won't ever be evidence against it, but what we know of it now is that there isn't.
The reason science is so successful is because it is NEVER 100% sure of anything. It is always willing to accept new evidence that may prove an accepted fact to be wrong.
This is the opposite of dogma which claims 100% certainty without evidence. This is static doctrine which falls behind the advancement of knowledge and ensures it will ALWAYS get its ass kicked by ever-advancing science!
@geoden Religious "fact": something written in a dusty old book that you must follow. Why follow? Because you just do. Why not question it? Because you just don't. Why is it true? Because it's there. There's no evidence, just self delusion!

There are many "observations" that don't support evolution or rather macro-evolution.
