Happy new year all Mike Harding fans! Mike is starting a 22 date tour - see the full line up on his website - but for all you fellow fans round 'ere, he's playing Blackburn's King George's Hall on March 29th......yes, it's a few weeks away but his shows always sell out quick! Before that, he's at Morecambe's Platform on Febuary 24th - but have a pint in the Smuggler's Den first!
This is one of my favourite pieces of music ever written or recorded, & for me this version is up with Beethoven's 6th Symphony or Vivaldi's four seasons.
A simple song about times gone by, but blimey what a corker!
For those that don't know, Mike is touring again this year & will be at Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre on Friday October 21st.
always loved this song. i grew up listening to mike harding and watching him on tv. one man show was fantastic. i think he ought to play this on his radio show sometime. it's not often you get a modern folk song that stands up against the old ones but this could last an eternity.....
Incredibly haunting and meaningful song, but is it too much to ask people in the audience to stop coughing for three or four minutes and ruining an otherwise perfect recording. Heathens!!
I was 8 years old when I moved to Bolton, Lancashire, in 1960. Many of the town`s mills were ìdle and empty` and many of the chimneys had gone. As a young man I worked in some of those buildings; no longer spinning cotton but still in use for other purposes. Even into the 1970s the streets still looked the same and the old folks still dressed much as they had always done. I haven`t heard the hooters and clogs ringing on cobbles in 40 years, but this post brings it all back. Deeply moving.
I am an Aussie, who was lucky enough to spend a few years in Lancs in the 70's. I remember this guy well, very funny, very talented. He once recorded a song about the FA Cup, thought it was something like 'Eeh wish it were Rochdale'. Anyone know where I can get a copy of album with this on it?
@357HFC comic cutz or best of mike harding will include the man united song as well should be downloadable m8, enjoy as i do, still looking for most of the songs as the x threw all my old stuff out
I Liberated One of his Albums from my dads collection nearly 20 years ago and still have it to this day i love this song and "Jimmy Spoons" And his Jokes still crack me up and his poems are genius i feel the rest of my generation dosnt know what their missing.
although it sums up any part of the proper Lancashire, the Lancashire that existed before civil servants broke it up in 1974;he wrote this about the Rossendale valley.
for someone who was born in Rossendale long enough ago to remember a dying cotton industry and who still lives there the words of this song are very poignant.
loved it since i first heard it. A brilliant song and one that, if ever Lancashire had a vote for an anthem, would be top of my list
