I saw Buddy live around this time in CT. Somebody kept yelling out "play Birdland" between tunes... Buddy ignored him... he rarely announced tunes or solos, but he got pissed and finally said "Here's Birdland. and WHO CARES!". Maynard had recorded it at the same time and was getting more airplay with his version. The MF chart by Nick Lane is MUCH more exciting. BOTH GREAT Bands at that time!
@muttley641 Krupa did say that, but not at Buddy's funeral. Gene died before Buddy did.
