They were kids who found a musical way to express their violent lives. Rap was born from musical necessity and creativity. yes i will say that a lot of rap music is about sex, drugs, and not much more but some of it is good. one clear example is eminem. he raps about his life experiences and growing up in 8 mile detroit. i do like rap but i like pop music way more. particularly lady gaga. lately she has been singing about loving yourself and being "born this way" which is making people (particularly gays and "freaks") feeling more confident in who they are. just my thoughts...

I had a similar situation where I let a co-worker guy borrow my car. I had no idea he was heavily into rap and he changed all my preset radio stations to all the rap stations. I asked him later why he did it and if he could not do that again. And he made a big stink about it and called me a racist hater because none of my stations were set to rap stations and he said he was just bringing some culture to my racist car. Well I never let him or any other co-worker who was a wigger borrow it again.

Generally I listen to rap hip hop and and other genres of music but I don't really favor one genre over the other to me ill listen to whatever as long as I like the song itself
alot of the 80's rap and early 90s rap are the good stuff they didnt always talk about beatin up people or hettin high and bein a lazy ass getting stuff handed to you and they actually put time into it. they used instruments for the beats and not throw a few rhymes together add a beat that someone else made like they do these days.
Listen to Tech N9ne, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Eminem (not the radio tracks), Yelawolf and guys like that. They aren't exactly the dumbed down hip hop on the radio.
No one can make you like rap. By the way, that does not mean that rap is crap. That just simply means that maybe rap is not your thing. From what I have learned, music is that which inspires you or soothes your soul. There are so many types of rap from gangsta to religious to political to overseas with a bazillion subcategories and styles. There's something for everyone. You either have not found your style or just not interested in that music style. Both are okay.

Even my black friends agree with me. I know there is somebody out there who could say the same things about the music I listen too. Oh, generalizing is perfectly okay when you look at it as a sum of its parts. There are always exceptions. I couldn't say anything about a specific rapper, because he may be different than the avg 1.

Whether you can relate to them or care about them is based on your interpretation & life experiences. I like it, b/c the artists I choose to listen to tell stories that interest and strengthen me. I also like rap because of the wordplay which can be quite witty & funny at times. Finally there is musicality in the rhythm of words as well as the underlying beat. Some beats are chilling, some smooth, & some sample popular voices or instrumentals. Thats all :)

Im sure some rap artist use real instruments and I would be open to listening to them. When you have an electric guitar you still have to hit the notes and chords as you would on an acoustic. From what I have learned, music is that which inspires you or soothes your soul. There are so many types of rap from gangsta to religious to political to overseas with a bazillion subcategories and styles. There's something for everyone. You either have not found your style or just not interested in that music style. Both are okay.

Even my black friends agree with me. I know there is somebody out there who could say the same things about the music I listen too. Oh, generalizing is perfectly okay when you look at it as a sum of its parts. There are always exceptions. I couldn't say anything about a specific rapper, because he may be different than the avg 1.

Basically... rap music tells stories.
Whether you can relate to them or care about them is based on your interpretation & life experiences. I like it, b/c the artists I choose to listen to tell stories that interest and strengthen me. I also like rap because of the wordplay which can be quite witty & funny at times. Finally there is musicality in the rhythm of words as well as the underlying beat. Some beats are chilling, some smooth, & some sample popular voices or instrumentals. Thats all :)

Im sure some rap artist use real instruments and I would be open to listening to them. When you have an electric guitar you still have to hit the notes and chords as you would on an acoustic.
