He could have followed the ball's path around him but opted for the dive.... it's essentially FORCED contact.

As for Australia Game, what about the Phantom Red Card given to Italy? Australia managed 1 shot while playing with a man advantage for 50 minutes.. but Italy was the least deserving. As for the Grosso call, it was the correct call.It was a Penalty, contact was made he impeded his progress to goal.

i'm Italian , and i understand the heartache of the Australian, who had a very talented team that year, but those are the rules of the game...the french player dived in the Italian box in the final and they awarded the penalty to France. It happens all the time...but to say this was not a penalty would be in error... 9 out 10 ref would have awarded the penalty to any team that day... but let's not forget the world champions is not the Italy, it is Spain.

Theoretically, it is a penalty. Neill (don't know spelling) went to the ground, and made contact with Grosso and not the ball. Now, could Grosso have probably avoided it? Yes. Was he looking for it? Yes. Does any of that matter? No. It is a penalty, albeit a very dubious one.

But this was the only way Grosso could get thru(slightly impeded, and took the easy way out!), as he was impeded and Lucas Neill never touched the ball. But I have to admit, when I first saw it live(when the match was on), I thought that the Aussie got to the ball and touched it first, and had got a bad deal.
