why does it work when you're leaving some of your fingers on the buttons when playing other notes? when I do it, it freaks out...

@rokkinghorse What do you mean by 'freaks out'? It only works on single notes. So say if the note is a 5, i can be pressing 1,2,3,4 and 5 and I'll still hit it, as only the highest note counts, but if it's a chord then it doesn't work.
