I saw Cochran put on a glass shattering show at the Loser's Club in Dallas a few times and flew on the same plane once. On the ground in a crowded Philadelphia airport, I was about 15 feet behind him as two freshly scrubbed young nuns in full habit were among the oncoming foot traffic headed for their gate. They maintained their composure passing the XXLL singer in the XL suit with a blond bouffant do but giggled mightily when safely by. I'll never forget it.
Wayne was amazing live. The energy his show had simply could not be captured by a TV camera. Seeing one of his road shows was a great "moment in time."
I saw this guy in a lounge in Chicagoland in 1967 and he kicked ass. We used to call him the white James Brown. The hair, clothing and the voice with that smokin' band....Grrrrrreat!
I first caught his show while my family was on vacation in Miami in 1964. Why they let a 14 year old into the bar is beyond me, but I know my mind was blown. I had always thought my 1st show was 65 for the Rolling Stones but then remembered the CC Riders show; that hair, those dance moves and that band! Cool stuff.
There was more than once in this video that his legs look robotic--and not like the dance The Robot...REAL robot-action. In fact, I'm convinced he was manufactured by 'the WHITE man' so they could co-op (steal) 'black' music (which came to be known as soul)! [jusstkiddn] I love WC and he's on my 'Regrets of Musicians I Never Got to See' list.
All you need to do TO DO THAT is learn to keep your balance really good and dance on something SLICK. He did it and Mr. Brown did it. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.
A pure entertainer and a great showman, albeit a bit of a joke then and now. His like is sorely missed, Tom Jones being probably the last great Las-Vegas style faux rocker we will ever see.
Well, pretty good. Entertaining, but only an imitation of the real thing. I'd prefer James Brown any day. We can see that Wayne studied James Brown from his dance steps to his band arrangements and configuration.
My infinitely way cool dad took us to see Wayne Cochran and the C.C. Riders at the Roostertail in Windsor, Ontario (across from my hometown of Detroit) when I was a little girl. THEY WERE AMAZING! Tight.
I saw Wayne & CC in Nashville with Jaco Pastorius on bass, what a night, Wayne poured my glass over flowed with Jack Black during a number and they put the spotlight on me and I had to chug it, Wayne laughed like a wildman ... Jaco had the longest fingers I have ever seen, one of a kind live show, one of a kind.
I saw these guys on some late night TV show way back when. Cochran was so bizarre-looking that I didn't know what to make of him. Thanks to the posting of video I've gained a huge amount of respect for The Riders. What a band! They're like The Detroit Wheels on steroids! I'll bet Mr. Cochran had a ball riding that wave sound.
Could you imagine a show with Wayne and James. Would that have been a hoot or what? He had some really good feet moves too. Jackie Gleason appeared to love it!
I saw Wayne and CC in small ramshackle bar on the outskirts of Rockford, Ill in the spring of 1970. There was about a 100 people in attendance all jammed together on small wooden chairs. All 8-10 members of the band and Wayne were on a flimsy wooden stage about 10x20 feet. And in my whole life since then(and I've heard James Brown live 3 times) I've never again experienced the thrill of that night from any musical group. Wayne didn't have as good a voice as James but he had a better "duck walk"
I just met tony Castellanos (the guitar player) last night . He was playing at a Mexican restaurant in Murfreesboro tn. We talked for a while. Good stories. Turns out he is also a neighbor. One heck of a good guitar player. I'll be going back to his gis as long as he plays there. One of the drummers is the ex of a girl I know. I am just all connected to the riders lol.
That is such a coinkydink...My buddy just called me the other night from a Mexican Restaurant in Mboro. I couldnt make the music out over the phone though.
THE BEST R&B horn band of all time is the CC Riders, and I've seen them all. I live right down the road apiece in Chattavegas. Does he keep up with any of the horn players? I come up to Smyrna/Murfreesboro fairly regularly and I'd LOVE to talk to him. Is he still there? You can answer me in mail if you wish. If I could get a horn band together a fourth as good as the CC Riders I could die happy.
Good for you! I'll check y'all out after I've had my pot of coffee, lol. I got to talk to Tony on the phone two weeks ago while I was in Smyrna for the weekend for the Franklin Guitar Show. We're gona meet up the next time I go up there. Nice feller! Yeah, I watched the 09 reunion, if I'd known b4hand, I'd probably have been goin' back to Miami. Oh, listen to Here Come the Mummies here at yt, best horn band I've heard since the CCr's. They'll be in town late April, I'll be there.
LOL I was just about to comment on that. Now living in and being from Augusta, and performing in every damn venue this town has. I knew James. Was a personal friend. He joked about Wayne " The Man is gonna be the white James brown" Well history shows it didn' t happen. But Waye was one hell of an entertainer. So don' t go showing disrespect. Mr. Brown didn't.
wayne cochran rules. he donated some stage clothes, and other items to ga music hall of fame in macon, ga. i saw exhibit and talked to the curator about wayne. about 3 days later, wayne called him and thanked me for the kind words.he sent me some 45s from the old days and some of his teaching tapes and a picture.a class act and a real gentleman. i respect the man, his music and the life he is now leading.elvis used to go see him in vegas jaco got his start in the cc riders, and wayne is awesome
There is a clip on Youtube of Wayne Cochran on The James Brown "Future Shock" tv show. He was about as close as there ever was to a white equivalent of James Brown.
You're right! Wayne was one of those acts that was at his best when seen live.
TV just doesn't do justice to what he was like live...Really mind-blowiing. I've seen him tearing the place down, grabbing bottles from the bar and passing them around...The guy would do the most fun and outrageous things...and the crowds LOVED it!
a friend of mine took me to the Lookout House in Cincy to see Wayne. Was the wildest thing I'd ever seen. After that we saw him at several places around cincy oh. Maggies Opera house in St Bernard, Yorkshire Club in Newport Ky
If youve seen him you know he always went behind the bar and got bottles of booze and filled everyone glass. One place he'd throw the bottles thru the ceiling..Awesome !
And the Crazyest place was Amelia High School gym. Honest ! Was the same show without the booze !
And don't forget rmf47, he did a wild show at the Inner Circle in Corryville one night in 68 that I'll never forget. I was a freshman at U.C. that year and he put on a show and then some.Lots of bottles flying everywhere. It was "get down time"!
I hope someone finds a TV clip of Wayne's version of Proud Mary; supposedly, Ike and Tina saw Wayne and the Riders perform this song in Detroit and "borrowed" his interpretation.
my dad is the trumpet player next to TDon. The riders have a reunion every year in Florida. I'm so very proud of these jazz cats. they set the standard for BST, Chicago, Tower of Power, etc. Maria
