In 1988 in Long Beach, California I interviewed Gary Stewart for a job opening running a tv-appliance store. He looked about 60 then, with a big perm and tired jacket. On his job application I remember this entry under Previous Employment: ' professional entertainer.' That he was. That he was. He'd just been fired from a Midas Muffler Shop and was calling square dances in the Valley. A nice man who just couldn't handle the very life he sang about. I was shocked to learn of his passing.

Gary was way ahead of his time in much of his music. Time Life music said that if a person has a love for country music then you absolutely have to have some Gary Stewart in their collection. Gary is just one of many talented singers to have come out of the hills of KY. I was fortunate enough to have seen him perform 2 times and this was late 70"s when his was at his best. Gary truly was a great singer.
