  • I wore this song out when my wife left me for another guy a year into our marriage. I would be rich if I had the money I spent on beer while listening to this and the other good stuff that was out at this time. One of the great old sad brokenhearted, feeling low songs ever. I wish e had some of this stuff today.

  • In 1988 in Long Beach, California I interviewed Gary Stewart for a job opening running a tv-appliance store. He looked about 60 then, with a big perm and tired jacket. On his job application I remember this entry under Previous Employment: ' professional entertainer.' That he was. That he was. He'd just been fired from a Midas Muffler Shop and was calling square dances in the Valley. A nice man who just couldn't handle the very life he sang about. I was shocked to learn of his passing.

  • i grow up on this song

  • i think everyone has forgotten what an artist this man was he will never be forgotten in my family

  • I feel your pain brother.

  • One of the best country songs ever. Gary sings from his heart. I love that steel guitar along with the lyrics. Thank you for posting.

  • Oh! Gary Stewart!

he was one of the best~~~singer in country music~~~

  • one of the best what a voice..

  • Gary Stewart was one of the best singer songwriters in my generation. I was raised on his music. my bestfriend of over 30 yrs and I would dance to his songs all the time and now my friend and Gary are both in heaven together..RIP GARY AND TONY(WETBACK)...

  • in my book there are only 3 songwriters that can (or could) write lyrics from the heart that anyone could relate to: jim croce, don henley and gary stewart. yeah, i know, there are plenty of other great songwriters but thease would be my top 3. miss you jim & gary !

  • @calvinhobbes62 ...i agree..Stewart was one of the greatest...so sad he died so tragically...maybe he'd still be writing songs today

  • Just sticks you right in your stomach. lol. i love it.

  • @ninok100, it was his son he lost to suicide in the late 80s. His wife died in 2003 of pneumonia, less than a month later Gary took his own life.

  • This is one of his very best songs!

  • memories of a time from the past..the strange thing is I grew into finding out what the man was singing about only a few years after hearing the song... great talent gone too soon...

  • Every now and then there comes an artist on the music scene, who leaves a powerful and indelible imprint forever. Gary Stewart was one such artist!

    - RJB, Nashville, TN

  • i was listening to randy rogers sing this then i found it by him, its a gr8 song but i love randy rogers version better

  • Gary was the honky tonk KING without a doubt. I remember me and my best friend 20 years ago fishin a creek bank in deep east Texas jammin our butts off to Gary. WOW, what memories. Miss the HELL out of those days. GREAT POST!!! I give Gary a BILLION STARS. RIP GARY "THE HONKY TONKER" STEWART

  • all good

  • I drink like a fish, not gonna lie but Gary Stewart was robbed in life, I would do the same if I lost my wife and daughter this makes me wanna grab a bottle a whiskey for gary

  • There is no more drinkin' songs like this any more coming out of Nashville like it used to be, along with Moe Bandy and Merle Haggard.

  • sooths the soul. i just oke up this morning to find out my girlfriend cheated on me :(

  • Been loving and PICKIN' some Gary Stewart since he came out! RIP Brother!

  • This one of the best songs by Gary Steward! I love drinking beer to this song and gettin' drunk! Hell yeah' what a great recording! So sad that he took his life due to loosing his wife. He had such a great talent! I was going to see his live performance, but he committed suicide at that time.

  • One of the best country songs ever written...spent many nights listening to him drowning my own sorrows..Many of us have done the same..JB

  • I'm not sure what the greatest country song ever written was but Gry Stewart wrote it.

  • great to hear this again . thanks for posting

  • All the makings of a great country song: a cheating spouse, drinking massive amounts of distilled spirits, reflection, regret, a terrific voice with lotsa' vibratto and a classic Nashville Sound-style arrangement. Awesome!

  • This is one damn sad song.

  • oh yeah, gotta love good ol' country tunes like this.

  • Gary was flying toTexas from Florida just about every weekend in the 90's to play the tonks.I was a member of the Night Shift band from the Dallas area, and we were fortunate enough to open for him several times.I sure miss him and those days.He had a hard life.GOD bless him.

  • greattt song,way to go

  • This song kind of hits you right in the gut. I dont know how to act single. What the hell does that mean??? My heart is breaking, and i dont have a plan. I have no stranger or old friend. And screw that, I am not strong and i dont know how to hide the pain of a broken heart...Pass the bottle... Thank you Mr. Stewart. I need a drink

  • feeling single is what you described an empty feeling that you fill with a drink

  • man i know how you feel ...... this one is for you !

  • Damn girl, your words are as strong as Gary's music. I wish I could say something to help you but I can't. I'm still married, and it's a difficult relationship, but I couldn't live without her. I would just die.

You know, I doubt that your husband would want you to be lonely. He would want you to have some companionship and comfort. Go look for it.

  • Sounds like he was in Kayenta Field House just yesterday!

He was & still one of the best singers in this whole wide world! Maybe the best!

  • great song

  • i got 3 girlfriend and the all cheating on me so im drinking 3 time double lol

  • you deserve it

  • i am single because my husband died.

i hate single. and i dont drink, but if did, i would sure drink to this one. fine fine song to cry to.

  • I'm very sorry your husband died. I know Mr. Stewart won't like you to drink your sorrows away because the next day everything will be there again. Most people won't recognize, but I do on "myspace". John Yazzie

  • @outlawrichard

oh, did you tell me how you did

  • @outlawrichard Good for you! Congrats on your Soberness!

  • I wish I could quit.

  • Yeah, I know.

  • Gary was way ahead of his time in much of his music. Time Life music said that if a person has a love for country music then you absolutely have to have some Gary Stewart in their collection. Gary is just one of many talented singers to have come out of the hills of KY. I was fortunate enough to have seen him perform 2 times and this was late 70"s when his was at his best. Gary truly was a great singer.

  • boy I need a bottle now after hearing this one

  • Break out the bottle

  • This is a drinking song!

  • No, This is THE drinkng song!
