I wonder what the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad paid in taxes on that bridge. I know there was a 15% tax on train tickets. Money was added to the road trusts to build highways which put the railroad out of business. (Nice) But they wanted to sell oil, and make Interstate 80 a sucess. It might not be if they had 150 or 200 mph trains running around!
@chiefsmokedawg hey man im not far from hear this place looks awsom what road do u take to get on to this trail and is it a long trail to ride thanks?
stock pipes on the yfz?.. reason fer asking im wanting to get 1 soon an i dont like the high pitched sound i like pipes that hav a throaty\deep sound to them
If they never rerun the train tracks (which I think would be cool) they should at least allow the old beds to be used for legal ATV riding.
I've never been bothered by authorities but I don't see what possible harm ATV's and dirtbikes do to an old train bed, it keeps at least part of the bed open so people can hike and explore the old historical cutoff otherwise it would be totally overgrown and unpassable. Good scenic trail to ride with huge viaducts, a tunnel, and abandon train stations.
I went here in the late 70's with my brother and his friends. There were still RR tracks but they were no longer in use. They had a motorized rail car and we "rode the rails" from Lake Hoatcong all the way to E. Stroudsburg, Pa. It was one of the best experiences I had as a kid and I'm surprised I remember it considering the amount of beer we drank and weed we smoked. He still has a super 8 movie of that trip. Maybe I'll see if I can digitalize it for posting on youtube.
After maxim road on stanhope rd when heading south i guess accourding to google maps. Maybe a mile after maxim, you can see on google maps the power lines and a trail right next to it. That's it.
We started all the way in Stanhope! only a few miles from Hopatcong. It was a really long ride. Lots of whoops. It was totally worth it though. Especially because they are going to be starting construction soon on the tracks.
I used to live in Newton Now I live in SC. I used to ride those tracks all the time on my YZ250. Yea they are suppost to start construction on that thing. But they have been saying that since 2000 I dont think its gonna happen. To much work involved. And as for getting Tickets yes becareful they do have State Rangers that sit on that Trail and patrol it with Utility Quads. God I miss rideing up there. Those tracks continue into PA for quite a ways.
I am 41 years old and have been riding those tracks since 1988 and after a long spell of working and raising a family I have over the last few years been riding them again. It is a great ride. I have recently heard of people getting busted on the tracks, Has anyone heard of any problems.
I heard that people have been occasionally busted on the tracks. As far as on the viaduct itself, the local police patrol it occasionally and hand out trespassing tix. But it's so high in the air it'd be pretty hard to get snuck up on.
cool vid, but tell the guy with the banshee that it's required to let your bike heat up for about 3 min, because if he doesn't and takes of right away you can mess up your main bearing. And well that's inside the whole engine near the crankshaft and would cost some bucks to fix.
It was opened in 1911, so it is much older than late 1920s.

@SLFiveMan I've ridden over this bridge at 100mph. When trains were late, management would get on and get that train on time!
