thanks for posting--i agree with all the sentiments about THE BID--i'd note about GLORIOUS SONG that she was an awesome mare--equally successful on turf and dirt --as a canadian i remember being so proud of her that year. she also went on to be one of the most successful broodmares as well. grand dam of serena's song and dam of singspiel to name a few:)
I also attended that day and it was a great race! And later on I recall seeing Tunerup winning at The Meadowlands. I remember is was a hot and humid that day at Monmouth as it often can be. I couldn't get into the Clubhouse because I didn't have a jacket on, even though they offered me a 'house jacket' to wear, ha! But who wanted to wear a jacket in that heat!
I saw that race live when I was 15 and they gave away free SB cocktail glasses, as if they needed to draw people in to watch the Bid. Glorious Song was a champion in her own right and turned in a great race although Bid was hardly asked for any serious running. Tunerup and The Cool Virginian, horses she did beat, were no slouches though. It was also the 1st time I ever witnessed a minus Show pool as well. In 1 blink of the toteboard Bid had $350,000 out of $415,000 wagered on him.
