  • Absolutely not! Tal can't compare to Rybka. He was better than Rybka. He played clean and he was original, unlike rybka.

  • karpov has had the same hair style for 50 years lol

  • @MrChessmove Hahaa

  • How can they concentrate with that broad singing?

  • I can tell Tal was one of the greats , during his illness at the end of his peak he was basically the master against fischer winning a series of all matches player agains tone another

  • tanks samirhossain!!!

  • TAL was extraordinary!!!

  • I read that on one occasion, Misha snuck out of his hospital room to visit the local Chess club, which no doubt included some Vodka and cigarettes! LOL.

  • Who is that at 1:07?

  • Absolutely perfect song choice!! "Those Were The Days"!!

(That's the title of an English version of the tune - I have no idea what the Russian lyrics are saying.)

  • Shit, Tal was always smoking.

  • Brilliant! I love the original footage. Wish there were some longer documetaries like this.

  • ...and Vlastimil Hort ?

  • Thanks a lot. Good music, too!

  • tal was extraordinary

  • tal was extraordinary

  • great video and nice song. =)

  • achei que essa muusica era uma composição do silvio santos

  • I read that Fischer had his mother there at this particulr event filming Karpov as he already realized AK was the great threat to him

  • Sure.

  • Is that really true? By that time Fischer did not have a good relationship with his mother (understatement).

  • I think the comment I read was from Tal about this story of Fischer's Mother filming this event.

Of course Tal had a sense of humour and may have exaggerated.

, She was originally German I think?

In Fischer's later years he and his mother were reconciled - for example in some of the audio interviews on the web he said she got East European chess magazines sent to him.

  • fisher never had a good relationship with his mother

  • quisiera saber de quien es la voz en esta cancion...pues me gusta más en esta versión pero no la puedo encontrar. Podrían ayudarme porfavor?.. gracias por los datos anteriores

  • la autora de la cancion es nani bregvadze

  • I thought this song was familiar. Those were the days by Mary Hopkins 1968.

  • The title of the russian song from 1917 is 'Endless Road' ('Dorogoi dlinnoyu)

    the composer Boris Fomin (1900-1948)

a famous cover version: 1968 Those Were the Days , a song credited to Gene Raskin, made popular by Mary Hopkin

  • thanks for the info! interesting.

  • good old times

  • nice song

  • Tal > Rybka

  • Tal > *.*

  • the name of the singer is Nani Bregvadze

  • Danke Schön!!

  • @martinscheele

I was wondering this information myself after viewing this video. Very excellent song you chose for the video. Thanks.

  • Tal... He's total legend in chess, he made a revoliution in the beggining and rest of his career. He's game style is marvellous

  • I'm meeting Karpov on Friday. I can't wait.

  • So, how was it? U asked him for an autograph?

  • It was kinda short only about 30 minutes of Q&A. But I got a picture with him and I got his autograph.

  • Cool. I love his funny Russian accent + it's amusing to watch how he has gained so much weight.

  • this two are my favourite grandmasters.

  • Two legends, one still alive. Like all great players K excels in every aspect, not just this or that. I imagine the music was chosen because for many it is the melody to "Those were the days", the Mary Hopkin hit. It certainly has a Russian flavor so I'm not surprised it goes to 1917 (or earlier!)

  • The original melody was Russian indeed. The song is "Дoрoги длинные", something as "Long Roads". The melody was taken by to become a hit, with other verses,in English, French, Spanish.

  • this video doesnt seem to have anything to do with karpov or tal... which one is karpov, which one is tal????

  • the young thin man in the red shirt is Karpov and in the light blue short-sleeved Shirt-Tal

  • Is the song in Russian? I really like it and and i'd like to know it's title.

  • Oh, thank you so much

  • Karpov did not get the title of winningest tourney player by being a total "Positional Defensive Player." His strength was his semi-open and open game knowledge.

  • He apparently felt the need to make up for not beating Fischer OTB for the title by winning something like 90 tournaments in a row. Karpov was an e4 player and a really good one until the match against Kasparov - he subsequently switched to d4 and found his 'true calling'.

  • when was this video taken?

  • 1973 in Berlin

  • Karpov is the master of active prophylaxis

  • Well,I think,it is really rude to call Karpov a positional"defensive"player.Such an adjective will fit Petrosian instead, although he was a legend of defence too.But about Karpov, what has happened is what almost always happens when a player passes the 40s...

  • Interesting exhibition. One of the greatest offensive tactical players (Tal) and one of the greatest positional defensive players (Karpov).
