i know a way but you need fireworks

take your sheet into regular ms paint and change the background color to a color that IS NOT OR CLOSE TO A COLOR ON THE SHEET

then go to fireworks open it up, use the wand tool to select the background then right click and go to select similar and press delete and done

but if you do this you cant use the method in this video. check out LSpearingProductions

he has a video on how (his voice is annoying though)

get gimp or photoshop and load the sheet, copy the sprites you want for the animation then the put in on a new movie clip modify/bitmap/trace bitmap click out side the sprites then click on the back ground backspace(may seem like a lot but once you get used to it its not to bad)

go in to Photoshop and use the magic background, save as a gif afterwards and set the matte to foregroung color. then import the images to library,from what i learned

You should press f7 when you make a new key frame so you wont have to go up on the time line each time and have to delete mario each time you make key frame. but good video.
