I had no Idea what the hell was going on on the screen when i was 9, garbage scow captain every time. I think i need to ebay this rig and get revenge on these m'fers
This was my favorite game as a kid on our 5200. I used to pull a chair close to the TV screen and lay blankets over them to create my own personal cockpit LOL
Star Raiders Rocks, I used to call this game "Star Trek" and pretend being on board the enterprise fighting the klingon ships, Great Times in my childhood :D.
Star Raiders may have been designed when the Atari 400 was becoming popular but the 5200 version is tops since you have the keyboard in the palm of your hand and the 5200 controller performs perfectly when playing this game.
One time I was engaged in a knock down drag em out dogfight with two of the enemy base ships(the ones with the shields) and my older brother snuck up behind me and hollered,"KLINGONS IN THE CREW) and hit the "S" button which dropped my shields and destroyed my ship.
I had to buy a new joystick before my dad got home(It was HIS computer) because I threw it at my brother.
Seriously, if you're this familiar with the technology, you're at least 35, which makes using "N00b" inexcusable. Moreover, this game is still surprisingly complex for the time of its release.
@jizzmatic2000 How many games of that time have you played? Look at the wiki article on "star trek text game". It's the exact same game. Your mistake is you're thinking of SR as a *console* game, when it was the flagship game of the Atari home *computer* line.
Well, now having a 5200, a copy of this game, and cleaned up some controllers, I can safely say this is one hell of a good game. Not like the 2600 one was bad, but limitations abound.
Hmn, maybe I should go hook the beast up and play a round. Been a month or so since I have... :\
One thing Skotty, beware of brothers when you're playing this game. One time I was in a pitched battle with two enemy baseships. My brother snuck up behind me, hit the "S" key and shouted,"KLINGON TRAITORS IN THE CREW," and laughed his ass off as my ship was blown to bits. I had to bike to the computer store for a new joystick because the one I had broke when I threw it at him.
I don't believe in self destruct. I believe the SEALS would have fought to the death before surrendering, if it was so detrimentally important to have a space war. I also believe that martyrdom would have destroyed the base if all the SEALS were destroyed. Those 5200 systems weren't clever enough. It was all strategy. Cool strategy game. You forgot to mention the blast you can set off with all cannons when you lock on to the target. Have a Merry Christmas!
I also remember that you only had to use fuel in enemy sectors until they knew you were there. The you could stop moving, conserve energy, and let the come to you. (Shots would miss you as long as you turned away from them before they hit, even though you WEREN'T MOVING!) Shields always on going into and coming out of hyperspace, because as you began you hyperspace acceleration, you could still hit an asteroid before the stars turned to streaks. Oh yeah, no asteroids in starbase sectors.
I was less than 10 years old and made Star Commander on the hardest level. Yeah somehow i figured out what all those numbers mean, funny i dont remember now.
Oh, also that hardest thing about this game was trying to find your base and repair and refuel when your computer down, you basically flew blind and hope the base came into view on your screen.
Y u say the Atar5200 was better than the XL800?

why the hell would you blow up ur own base?
jcarrasco00 2 years ago
#1 To keep the enemy from getting it.
#2 To watch the little robot wander around aimlessly for the rest of the game looking for the base.

I wouldn't have destroyed that starbase. I'd have taken out the 2 man patrol above it on the galactic chart.
