We'll never know with certainty how fast Bob Hayes could run the 100 in. He ran as fast as he needed to, the closer the race the faster he ran. That is what makes his anchor leg of the 4x100 meters race in the 1964 olympics so remarkable. When he got the baton, the USA team was way behind, and he simply launched himself like a missle and blew everyone's doors off. I mean he ran his split in 8.6 on a cinder track for pete's sake. That is just crazy fast.
Hey, wouldn't this race of 1964 be a 100 yard dash - versus the 100 meters of today? If I recall from my 70's track days, the conversion is about .9 seconds. If so, you'd have to add that to Hayes' time for an accurate comp of today's sprinters. DOES anybody know this for sure? Maybe the Olympics, being international, already used meters.. Just wondering........
@lanelsonconsulting it was 100 meters for sure and he was running on cinder/gravel. By any yardstick it's considered one of the fastest 100m ever run given the conditions.
If I was choosing a squad of all-time greats to send to the Olympics in London, Bob Hayes would be my choice for the men's 100 metres. Simply awesome!
I've always wondered how fast Bob Hayes could have run at Mexico City with the altitude and full electronic timing if he had been able to focus 100% on track. He would have been only 25 years old.
@hoyadestroya85 easily in the mid 9.8 range, perhaps even faster..he would have killed hines &co. dont forget the brand new tartan track in mexico city
If you watch this video closely, you'll see Hayes came off the gas about 10 meters before the end of the race. I noticed it in the first clip. It's quite clear. In lane one he has a clear view of the rest of the field and was way ahead and knew it, unlike in the 4 x 100 where he has runners on both sides of him and was way behind both, quite desperate when he get the baton. The 4 x 100 is Hayes running all out. Not much technique, just raw speed in its purest form.
@pbrick6301 With all due respect to the great Homer Jones, He would be the first to tell you that no one was as fast as Bob Hayes. Jones was 6'2" tall, 225 lbs, which was as big as most TE's of the time, and he was extremely tough to bring down. He was reported to have run the 100 yard dash in 9.2 (though I have not been able to verify it).
@fiscusd i wish they could of raced at halftime or something. i am amazed that anybody else ever heard of homer jones. he is kind of a forgotten man. and yes you are probably right. look how hayes powers thru the track.
@pbrick6301 That is a race I would have paid real money to see! I'll throw you a tidbit about Homer Jones, he played in the first Monday Night Football game, by that time he had been traded to the Browns, and in that game he returned a kickoff for a TD. Only multiple knee injuries kept him from having a HOF career.
Tats a cinder track as they are driving in the pins for the starting blocks. Test have show that cinders greatly increase the friction between the foot and the track as compared with these new composite tracks.
Quelle PUISSANCE, dommage qu'il n'est pas continué le sprint jusqu'à MEXICO, il est aurait sans doute établit un record IMBATTABLE jusqu'à aujourd'ui!!
@fear123wz He's speaking French...he said "What POWER, pity he did not continue sprinting in MEXICO (Olympics), he would have probably set another record..UNBEATABLE! I remember he stopped sprinting at age 21!"
a classic capture of a man who was truly the world's fastest human - not just a title given to whoever happens to record the fastest time of the year. The anchor leg for the 4 x 100 is still the most incredible display of pure speed that has ever been seen. One anecdote about that - two coaches were timing his anchor leg and when the race ended, one coach looked at the other and said, "what did you get, my timer stopped." The other stared at his watch and said "8.9! other timed from 8.7 - 8.9
@mrcvf100 yeah but 4 by 1 times are not even used because its from a running start, its hand timed, and the runner may get the baton late in the exchange zone and run less than 100 meters. So 8.9 is really nothing amazing, a guy who run 11.0 in the 100 usually splits are around low 10s, sometimes high 9s
you know when you watch the slow mo there is no doubt even on this shit track that he would have run under 10.0 if he didn't ease up on his last stride !
@use2slam2 bro call me crazy but i think if he had a bad start and had to catch figeroua this 10.05 would definitely be a 9.95-9.98!! he was the most dangerous when had to to catch them from behind like he showed in that relay race
Hayes still just blows my mind. the youngsters today don't realize what this man would have done in his prime in a 100m against a chris johnson or desean jackson. just look at what he ran on that chewed up dirt track. on todays rubberized tramopline surface tracks that right there would have been under 9,9 hell in a semi on this same crap track with wind just over legal he clicked off a 9.91. running track as a side sport after football season too, just crazy
funny all these Chris Johnson fans and Desean Jackson fans stating how fast they are
take a look at 2nd place Cuba's Enrique Figueroa he ran 10.2 and on this peice of shit dirt
track look by how much he was beaten by hayes on this same shit dirt track and in an even shittier chewed up lane. Johnson's best 100m is 10.34(and on todays fast modern surface tracks)hayes in his prime would EMBARRESS Jobnhson so bad and i mean
@use2slam2 EXACTLY!!!!!! and imagine him with today's advanced training methods. we are talking nearly half a century later. Love when someone mentions that they ran on DIRT! It's important. People who know nothing about sprinting freak when Hayes is mentioned as the fastest NFL player ever but OK til CJ or DS can win the Olympic final, they aren't the fastest person on Earth. Hayes was!
Absolutely. All four of them healthy and with good handoffs, I'm callin a low 36.9. But Powell better exercise his mental demons if he plans on getting a medal in Deagu.
Man if coaches could see this they would be pullin their hair out. His arms are flailing, his head is bobbing, his start is just okay, and yet he's killin everyone. Bullet was an amazing athlete....
@phastman1994 Are You puting Hayes and Owens in the same bunch with Powell?Come on Man, they maybe are turning in their graves with Your comentaries. Powell never even dream of having the balls of those guys,
@phastman1994 man he was only 21 years old in tokyo, played and trained mainly for american football and still DESTROYED the best sprinters at that time with ease!lane 1 was damaged by long distance runners and the 10km walk race!!just look at his top end speed in that relay race..i think not even gay ,carl lewis, donovan bailey have/had his tpo end speed, bolt is probably the closest
@puljacina Yeah and notice how he has no drive phase? Amazing! His top-end speed was close to 27mph. With the mondo tracks like u said, better spikes, probably better blocks etc. we have today, his top-end would probably be up with Bolt and Gay's in the mid to high 27mph or 44km/h!
@phastman1994 hell yea, imagine him on todays freakin fast tracks(beijing, eugene, new york, rieti, athens, berlin etc.) and coached by john smith!!!! LOL that would be SCARY
@phastman1994 There is to much speculations about Hayes been the fastest man ever, every great sportman have to performance in the tecnical conditions of his time and with the oponents of his generation. The history of sprint is full with examples of guys like Powell, who did't have balls enougth to deal with the nevers, when obiuslly he was the best man out there. Gay is a tipical example of an extraordinary sprinter who have the balls, but ,,,,,Guys like Bolt and Hayes are liders on their own
@hernandovalerio I wasn't really comparing Hayes and Owens with Powell, just sayin that Hayes and maybe Owens would probably be up there with the big 3 if they were sprinters at there peak in our generation.
@phastman1994 MAYBE OWENS??????!!!!!!!!!!! REALLY????!!!!! Come on Man, to compare the most trascendental sprinter in history with somebody else sounds like a lack of respect to him, and tha's it.
@hernandovalerio I just said, I'm not comparing, it's impossible to know what Owens would be runnin today in peak form so I said maybe Owens.. how bout "probably" Owens? That better?
@hernandovalerio What the fuck are you talking about? Owens is one of the greatest sprinters ever without doubt, I'm just not sure what kind of times he would be running if he was still sprinting today. Tell me, what do YOU think Owens would run today? Since according to you it's disrespectful to put Powell in the same sentence as Owens.
@hernandovalerio Powell had his time too, from 05 to mid 08 Powell was dominant in 100m, he couldn't and still can't perform under pressure but as far as times and victories go he was #1.
Now answer the question.. what do u think Owens would run today?
@phastman1994 powell is someone like lets say leroy burrell!! great athlete but isnt able to peform great on the biggest stages(olympics or WC's,commonwealth games arent that important) but only in relay races) and thats why he isnt in the same league with carl lewis, owens,mo greene etc.
@puljacina true, but I was mainly referring to pure potential (time wise). As far as being a performer and achievements go, Owens is without question the better sprinter.
@hernandovalerio That's true but I was talking about pure potential (pure speed) not there ability to perform mentally under pressure and win the races that count..
@phastman1994 i agree... and btw do u know mo greene's fastest anchor that he ever ran??i cant find his relay splits from sydney or seville.he looked fuckin fast there!! i can't imagine that powell was much faster than mo in the anchor! but jamiaca has bolt in the curve and the us boys had brian lewis LOL
@puljacina There is not need of explain how good Green was, He simple dominated his generation, personally I greatly enjoyed his concentration in the start line and very technical as well.
@puljacina Gay did not shit in his pants at Berlin 2009 as Powell did. Gay just earned our respect and admiration for showing an amazing performance. Greene in Atehns earned the same respect even in defeat.
@hernandovalerio youre right but i still think that he ducked bolt in the 200m in berlin! i know that he had nagging injuries in 09 but it would have been a good chance to at least attack MJ's 19.32!
@puljacina The Gay's task sames to be too hiugh, and loocks almost imposible. Bolt is not only faster but even younger then Gay. In Berlin 2009 Gay in defeat loocks almost like Ulisses trying to take the walls of Troy, that good he was.
@hernandovalerio didn't say it wasn't marvellous but just saying that he maybe was shitting alittle bit considering what Bolt did in the semi finals jogging.
@keonist Greene and Bolt are sprinters of diferent generations. Anyway Greene demostrated all his carrer that he had not only the speed but specially the balls. Asafa Powell did not have , has not and will not have the balls. He goes to the big starts already defeated.
@keonist There is a lot of respect that Mo Green earned in his carrer, he is history now and he don't have nothing to probe. Anyway if you are loocking for magnificent athlets whose only weekness was their unability of dealing with the nerves under pressure, then you most loock for guys like Powell, Silvio Leonard, Ron Clark, David Bedford...........the list is long.
@hernandovalerio i have alot of respect for Mo but all i am saying is that he never ran against bolt so who knows? if he did he might have crap his pants to see that someone was better than him because as we all know Mo was the best in his time.
@keonist At the 100 m final in Athens Mo was not the best out there and he did not crap his pants, depite the fat that there were guys younger and faster then him.
@hernandovalerio that's true but still there was not a bolt type of runner in that field. there was no one who jogged a 9.8 in the semi finals coming into the final like what bolt did in Berlin and Beijing.
@keonist You definitely got a point about that, but Greene was too strong of a competitor to choke up against even someone in the same league as Bolt. I think if Greene was in his prime today he'd be a consistent sub 9.8s sprinter.
@keonist Exactly, and I'm sure Bolt will reach his goal of sub 9.5 if he stays healthy and the conditions are decent at the WC's. Deagu will probably be the fastest 100m final ever if everyone's healthy! Do you think Powell can handle the pressure to make the podium again? I hope so but it might take a sub 9.8..
@phastman1994 that's a big ask from Powell because he has never ran sub 9.8 in a major finals before so it will be tough for him especially when you got a 21 year old in Blake who is even more confident than Powell and as something to prove, the same goes for Crater. but i believe by National Championship rolls around and we see the results we will be able to see if both Blake and Carter can challenge Powell in the Worlds, one thing i know though national champs will be rocking next year.
@keonist I agree, would be nice to see Powell make the podium again but realistically I think Blake and Carter have just as big a chance if not bigger. Powell's one of those sprinters that never had the chance to reach his full potential, cause honestly I think 2010 was his final chance to lower his PB of 9.72.
@phastman1994 that's true, it's sad to see a great talent like powell go to waste like dat. and you're Blake and Carter have something bigger to prove next year. the only question i have for them is if they can go through the rounds and when they reach the finals can they run their personal best.
What you think about the Jamaican National Championship next, both male and female 100m final will be bangin, it will be superb.
@keonist Oh it'll be sick, with Bolt, Powell, Carter, Blake, and maybe come of the newcomers like Clarke or Lee. Do you know if they'll all be competing at the Jamaican National Champs though?
@phastman1994 that's a tough ask for all of them to be there but i sure hope so. if you look at the names carefully even the semi finals will be sickkkkkkkk, with youngsters such as Oshane Bailey who is running 10.1 who i believe can run 9.9 next year. Kemar Roach who is another 10.1 man, Forsthye 9.9 man, Frater 9.9 man and a couple others who's names can't come to me right now.
@phastman1994 oh i we might see Mickel Ashmeade step up to the big boys next season, and don't forget Steve Mullings, it's just too much names man. lol
@phastman1994 yep no jogging for Powell again if he wants to make the team. So i am expecting super fast times. Bolt won't be in the race so i think everyone shold be even more confident to book their place.
@keonist True, I guess we'll see soon enough at the JA National Champs how Powell reacts to Carter and Blake (assuming they'll all be competing there).
@phastman1994 I hope he doesn't choke there too. But then again losing to Blake and Carter isn't really choking nowadays. Lol. Jamaica's 4x100 is gonna be INSANE>
@EPizits Haha good point. Powell has no room for error at the WC's, Deagu 2011 will probably be the fastest and most competitive 100m final EVER! And yeah, a healthy Carter, Blake, Bolt and Powell with decent exchanges, I'm lookin at a sub 37!
@puljacina Apparently Greene's split in Seville was 8.94!, not sure what he ran in Sydney though. I wonder what Greene's anchor was in Athens 2004, he ran a crazy anchor there when he almost caught Lewis-Francis for the gold!
@phastman1994 man i totally forgot athens where he ran a great relay race, yea it was really close.would have been great if he had won a another olympic gold medal after his broken leg and another injuries!
@DjBuBbOGum This is from a documentary, so the footage is real. Try searching for Leni Riefenstahl's 'Olympia' from the 1936 Berlin games, and maybe you'll understand that this isn't such a big thing.
cuba's enrique figeuroa took second in 10.2, on this shitting cinder track look at by how much hayes beat him by. deion sanders best 100m was 10.24 ON MODERN SURFACE TRACK. if hayes in his prime raced deion in his prime dieon would have got completely S-M-O-K-E-D !!!!
hayes would embarrass Bolt if Bolt had to run on this 1964 cinder dirt track

@hernandovalerio Powell had his time too, from 05 to mid 08 Powell was dominant in 100m, he couldn't and still can't perform under pressure but as far as times and victories go he was #1.
Now answer the question.. what do u think Owens would run today?
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 powell is someone like lets say leroy burrell!! great athlete but isnt able to peform great on the biggest stages(olympics or WC's,commonwealth games arent that important) but only in relay races) and thats why he isnt in the same league with carl lewis, owens,mo greene etc.
puljacina 1 year ago
@puljacina true, but I was mainly referring to pure potential (time wise). As far as being a performer and achievements go, Owens is without question the better sprinter.
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 There were, are and will be to much "pure potential" runners lacking the balls to show their potential in high competition
hernandovalerio 1 year ago
@hernandovalerio That's true but I was talking about pure potential (pure speed) not there ability to perform mentally under pressure and win the races that count..
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 i agree... and btw do u know mo greene's fastest anchor that he ever ran??i cant find his relay splits from sydney or seville.he looked fuckin fast there!! i can't imagine that powell was much faster than mo in the anchor! but jamiaca has bolt in the curve and the us boys had brian lewis LOL
puljacina 1 year ago
@puljacina There is not need of explain how good Green was, He simple dominated his generation, personally I greatly enjoyed his concentration in the start line and very technical as well.
hernandovalerio 1 year ago
@hernandovalerio greene was definitely an amazing competitor! always focused and wasnt afraid of anyone and he was the MASTER of the drive phase
puljacina 1 year ago
@puljacina no disrespect to Mo Greene but i do believe he would shit in pants if he had to face Bolt.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist and why would he "shit in his pants" ?we are talkin about mo greene here, not asafa! LOL
puljacina 1 year ago
@puljacina Gay did not shit in his pants at Berlin 2009 as Powell did. Gay just earned our respect and admiration for showing an amazing performance. Greene in Atehns earned the same respect even in defeat.
hernandovalerio 1 year ago
@hernandovalerio youre right but i still think that he ducked bolt in the 200m in berlin! i know that he had nagging injuries in 09 but it would have been a good chance to at least attack MJ's 19.32!
puljacina 1 year ago
@puljacina The Gay's task sames to be too hiugh, and loocks almost imposible. Bolt is not only faster but even younger then Gay. In Berlin 2009 Gay in defeat loocks almost like Ulisses trying to take the walls of Troy, that good he was.
hernandovalerio 1 year ago
@hernandovalerio i believe Gay farted though, i can only imagine how he must have felt to see bolt dancing beside of him. i believe he farted.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist The winner takes it all!!!!!!!!!
But Gay losing with 9.71 s is simple marvellous in my eyes.
hernandovalerio 1 year ago
@hernandovalerio didn't say it wasn't marvellous but just saying that he maybe was shitting alittle bit considering what Bolt did in the semi finals jogging.
keonist 1 year ago
@puljacina the reason why i said this is because Mo never faced someone has talented as bolt, so maybe he would.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist Greene and Bolt are sprinters of diferent generations. Anyway Greene demostrated all his carrer that he had not only the speed but specially the balls. Asafa Powell did not have , has not and will not have the balls. He goes to the big starts already defeated.
hernandovalerio 1 year ago
@hernandovalerio and Greene never faced a Bolt or a Bolt like athlete before so who knows maybe he would shit in his pants
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist There is a lot of respect that Mo Green earned in his carrer, he is history now and he don't have nothing to probe. Anyway if you are loocking for magnificent athlets whose only weekness was their unability of dealing with the nerves under pressure, then you most loock for guys like Powell, Silvio Leonard, Ron Clark, David Bedford...........the list is long.
hernandovalerio 1 year ago
@hernandovalerio i have alot of respect for Mo but all i am saying is that he never ran against bolt so who knows? if he did he might have crap his pants to see that someone was better than him because as we all know Mo was the best in his time.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist At the 100 m final in Athens Mo was not the best out there and he did not crap his pants, depite the fat that there were guys younger and faster then him.
hernandovalerio 1 year ago
@hernandovalerio that's true but still there was not a bolt type of runner in that field. there was no one who jogged a 9.8 in the semi finals coming into the final like what bolt did in Berlin and Beijing.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist You definitely got a point about that, but Greene was too strong of a competitor to choke up against even someone in the same league as Bolt. I think if Greene was in his prime today he'd be a consistent sub 9.8s sprinter.
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 i see your point but i guess those are some of the things we will never find out about.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist Yeah man so true
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 have you heard that bolt is in training already and he is 100% now?
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist Yeah I read about that, he's gonna run some crazy times next year in Deagu! Lets just hope he can stay injury free.
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 i really hope he can stay healthy because once he's healthy the possibilities are endless.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist Exactly, and I'm sure Bolt will reach his goal of sub 9.5 if he stays healthy and the conditions are decent at the WC's. Deagu will probably be the fastest 100m final ever if everyone's healthy! Do you think Powell can handle the pressure to make the podium again? I hope so but it might take a sub 9.8..
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 that's a big ask from Powell because he has never ran sub 9.8 in a major finals before so it will be tough for him especially when you got a 21 year old in Blake who is even more confident than Powell and as something to prove, the same goes for Crater. but i believe by National Championship rolls around and we see the results we will be able to see if both Blake and Carter can challenge Powell in the Worlds, one thing i know though national champs will be rocking next year.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist I agree, would be nice to see Powell make the podium again but realistically I think Blake and Carter have just as big a chance if not bigger. Powell's one of those sprinters that never had the chance to reach his full potential, cause honestly I think 2010 was his final chance to lower his PB of 9.72.
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 I am tired lisening the same song about Powell ",,,,if,if,if,if,..."
hernandovalerio 1 year ago
@hernandovalerio Huh? I'm talkin about Powell making the podium at next years world champ, I didn't make any excuses..
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 that's true, it's sad to see a great talent like powell go to waste like dat. and you're Blake and Carter have something bigger to prove next year. the only question i have for them is if they can go through the rounds and when they reach the finals can they run their personal best.
What you think about the Jamaican National Championship next, both male and female 100m final will be bangin, it will be superb.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist Oh it'll be sick, with Bolt, Powell, Carter, Blake, and maybe come of the newcomers like Clarke or Lee. Do you know if they'll all be competing at the Jamaican National Champs though?
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 that's a tough ask for all of them to be there but i sure hope so. if you look at the names carefully even the semi finals will be sickkkkkkkk, with youngsters such as Oshane Bailey who is running 10.1 who i believe can run 9.9 next year. Kemar Roach who is another 10.1 man, Forsthye 9.9 man, Frater 9.9 man and a couple others who's names can't come to me right now.
keonist 1 year ago
@phastman1994 oh i we might see Mickel Ashmeade step up to the big boys next season, and don't forget Steve Mullings, it's just too much names man. lol
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist Yeah it'll be nuts, this years JA Nationals could be just as fast as an average WC or Olympic final with all these big names!
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 yep no jogging for Powell again if he wants to make the team. So i am expecting super fast times. Bolt won't be in the race so i think everyone shold be even more confident to book their place.
keonist 1 year ago
@keonist True, I guess we'll see soon enough at the JA National Champs how Powell reacts to Carter and Blake (assuming they'll all be competing there).
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 I hope he doesn't choke there too. But then again losing to Blake and Carter isn't really choking nowadays. Lol. Jamaica's 4x100 is gonna be INSANE>
EPizits 1 year ago
@EPizits Haha good point. Powell has no room for error at the WC's, Deagu 2011 will probably be the fastest and most competitive 100m final EVER! And yeah, a healthy Carter, Blake, Bolt and Powell with decent exchanges, I'm lookin at a sub 37!
phastman1994 1 year ago
@puljacina Apparently Greene's split in Seville was 8.94!, not sure what he ran in Sydney though. I wonder what Greene's anchor was in Athens 2004, he ran a crazy anchor there when he almost caught Lewis-Francis for the gold!
phastman1994 1 year ago
@phastman1994 man i totally forgot athens where he ran a great relay race, yea it was really close.would have been great if he had won a another olympic gold medal after his broken leg and another injuries!

is this a movie? the quality look wayyy too good for 1964
DjBuBbOGum 1 year ago 3
@DjBuBbOGum This is from a documentary, so the footage is real. Try searching for Leni Riefenstahl's 'Olympia' from the 1936 Berlin games, and maybe you'll understand that this isn't such a big thing.
