Anyone else have the sense that part of what gives this selection its haunting appeal is the vaguely harpsichord-like use of the keyboard? I imagine entering the parlor of a 17th century Flemish household where I find a pair of young women rehearsing, one singing, the other at the keys.

yes, i agree, i think the music is a sort of female energy (the yang), and i think Guthrie wanted to work with that femaleness in his music--even though he as straight, and even dated liz. there are also parallels to this in Dave Stewart/Annie lennox, or take, Burt Bacharach who lived wriing for different female voices, like Dionne warwick. Truly music that startles and really DOES take you to another world. A womb with a view!

Pleasantly surprised to hear this track on a MOS Chillout Annual 2002 Australian edition, great to see that quality music like this has no use by date unlike the dime a chime tripe that gets peddled nowadays which is well rotten before it even hits the shelves. It's not easy to make any one song the best song because one begins, at that point, to compare emotions. The emotions are a spectrum. So it's like trying to say that red is better than blue. You are right in a sense--this is perhaps the most subtle, most intricate and emotionally complex on the album. I am a composer and musician, and i was almost ashamed that i could not see the beauty at first. I was grooving to the energy-songs. Different friends kept pointing out this piece.
