I've gotten to see Challenger twice, both times on runs up and down this same line. Mine were between Rosemont and Northfield/Dundas. Along Hwy 3. Not as good or upclose a view as you managed to get here. This is terrific!
A Qstn: In all the videos of her, and definitely every time I got to see her, there are bright flashes that seem to happen randomly from forward area under the cab. When she's up to speed, sometimes it looks like just a bright glow, see 0:47 to 0:49. But often flashes. What?
U.P is scared to do that. and it would cost more. challenger is big and heavy and freight locomotive now weigh less. challenger could also break a rail, or bend one. it would be to hard to run it regular.
@09JDCTrainMan it is. Thats why they were taken out of service. The challenger 3985 can only go where the tracks are new. if big boys ran U.P would make no progress at all.
Wow, great video. Really well planned and shot. Even includes the heroic dodging of construction and highway cones! Anything for the shot when 3985 comes through town. Not to be missed, and you managed a lot of good footage. As someone who remembers them when ... I love to hear that whistle!
DUDE! That was me right in front of you when the Challenger was going by Valleyfair. I had a great shot of the front of the Challenger going down the frontage road, only to realize when we got to the end the #$%&* CAMERA WASN'T RECORDING!! I was so pissed! Stupid soft start recording button. Anyway, I'll be adding my videos eventually.
I hope it will appear in Minnesota soon I live in Rochester

Do all the steamies on the UP run 2 extra water tanks?
ExcaliburLink 1 year ago
@ExcaliburLink Just 3985 does. And 844 use the 2 extra water tenders when only doubleheading with 3985.

@thomasrosiefan1 I read that 844 runs on oil now...

@ExcaliburLink 844 has been running on oil since 1944.

What a monster! Really well done video. (I'm from Shakopee) I'm fascinated with the old steam locomotives.

There should be thousands built to haul America's trains. Scrap the diesels!
