RIP Syd Barrett, thanks for all the great tunes, and all the inspiration, and some great experience's i had with your music. you are one of the greatest musicians of all time. shine on you crazy diamond. :(
I think the song is an angry one, mostly because he is declaring that he is not crazy. He may have been a little existential at times. but Everyone is telling syd he's too crazy to be in his own band. This song to me is more of the opposite of what everyone else is saying. Like, "hey who's writing this songs? Clearly I am" he's at best sad and a lot different. You know those pink floyd guys are assholes. Gilmour said syd was having "homosexual delusions" because he was wearing girls clothes
Always thought the most telling part was at the end (y'know.. Where you would want your most hard-hitting point to be.. kinda thing, know what i mean?).
"what exactly is a dream?" - i.e. making it in the band, whey-hey! achieving the dream! What they all wanted since getting into playing music.
"what exactly is a joke?" the actual reality of the music biz, demands, pressures, a NON spontaneous drag of package tours & repeating oneself.
just my twopence ha'penny worth i know but i find their theorising about the song kinda scary. this is on a dvd yeah? And loads of people might hear this stuff & think 'yeah truth, that's how it was'.
i first heard the song in my teens with my friends, we took it like..
"I'm wondering who could be writing this song" i.e. after writing their two hit singles, 90% or so of the first album, if he (syd) wasn't, then who would take over song-writing duties?
I actually love that first guy's explanation of the song, and how the song reflects Syd's mental state.
