The doc is not exactly right. In standard french, they just say: tomate [tom'at] for tomato. But archaic names do in fact include 'pomme d'amour' ie. apple of love, but this is NOT standard French usage!
In italian they go for a similar archaic french term everyday. In Italian we say: 'pomodoro' which means little to native italians, but a romance specialist would immediately recognise the 'pomme/o d' oro' ie. 'golden apples'
referring to the fact they used to be golden when introduced!

vegetable really has no meaning, it just means 'plant matter used in savoury cooking' it even applies to stems and roots!
