there's so many activities that are cost effective..many free. i live out west, so the outdoors are my playground. it's not always free, especially skiing. but there's ways around having to spend for happiness. some of this boils down to conforming right? the 20's..hollywood put smoking in the movies. women bought into it. it's been easy for advertisers for decades..
could do so much more with my time than read books i think they fuk with peoples mind to well everything on earth messes with our mind it makes us who we are as a human
so should we be retarded and no nothing and have no creativity i mean dude are u saying we should be like cavemen im glad we got smarter and learned how to make money see new things glad life is more fun alot funnier than kicking rocks in the woods and if u can save ur money than do so i Guss commercial showed u that to life is life live it do wat u do and we shall do Wat we do people are all different which is why we evolved so much lke those books for me thats a waste of money and time
I have mixed feelings about this cause when I shop, I feel like maybe I am doing the economy good. However, I am a bargain shopper and if I see a great deal I jump on it. And I have a rule of thumb almost on everything. I never spend anything over $30 on a pair of shoes. get $2/5 on ice cream I.E. haggan dazs or ben and jerry's. and any sale that big chain stores are given or promoting then I jump on it as long as they are good.
at nucmaz I know what you're saying, but if you think about the big picture - where would our economy be if we were all consumption? You help the economy in the long run by saving to invest in productive assets.
That said, I love a good bargain myself. I recently got 3 great polo shirts at a thrift store for a buck!
They say they need to get the consumer spending to get the economy back going. They call the US a consumer society. Consumer sounds like a bad label. I don't like being called a consumer.
Yes, people have grown up thinking that consuming = good economy. But if you point out to someone that on a micro scale (say a household level) more consumption than production = going broke.
It is very simple. You consume more than you produce you go broke. America is bankrupt right now. It just has not been admitted. I don't mind spending and I like nice things but if you don't have cash to buy maybe you can't afford it. Inflation is here, it is going to get crazy soon. Good Luck!
It's definitely all done by design. We as a society are not happy with the way we look or feel so we spend money as you mentioned in order to feel better. The propaganda machine is still alive and well, but I think the American people and our friends around the world are starting to wake to this and all other New World Order schemes to benefit international corporations.
I learned when I was a kid when I got a pair of tennis shoes that were supposed to make me run and jump better... yeah well it never happened. Peer pressure which is what you described primarily did affect me because socially that is hard to fight when growing up and establishing your identity amongst others.
Movies and restaurants are fine now and then, everyone wants pampering, but hanging out or doing free and fun stuff is only limited by your imagination as a group or alone.
Oh this reminds me of another book I read. Some guy went around to a bunch of schools that specialized in various talents (music, sports) that produced the best in their respective fields. One thing he noticed is that all of them had very austere and simple facilities. You would think the opposite, but it's really not the equipment that makes the athlete. It's called The Talent Code
Speaking of books, just came across this in my notes of Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal: "It is true that we are not a capitalist system any longer: we are a mixed economy, i.e., a mixture of capitalism and statism, of freedom and controls. A mixed economy is a country in the process of disintegration, a civil war of pressure-groups looting and devouring one another. In this sense, "consumerism" might be the appropriate name for it."
The Oprah Effect...whoever and whatever is on her show or featured in her magazine becomes an instant hit. It drives me crazy when I see people here in LA driving cars with flashy rims (that spin while the car is stopped!) and why do people pay a cover charge to get into a club--buying one drink for the cost of a full bottle at the grocery store? luckily i don't drink...but i like to eat. i can make a steak as good as any steakhouse at 1/4 of the price. I'm frugal and proud!
Lol rims are hilarious. They're big in Chicago too. I just learned to make pizza myself and it's SO CHEAP. Flour yeast tomatoe paste veggies and some spices, plus it's delicious!
i just watched that as well. the part near the end explaining and describing the clinton admin had some incredibly striking parallels to obama's. century of self is fantastic, i also highly reccomend it.
I took up hobbies that required no physical possessions to do. For example, yoga and chess. I can play chess for hours on end with interesting people and it costs me nothing, and the peer pressure is to study chess, play and improve, which also costs nothing. It does cost money to join a yoga studio, but once there everything is material-free. The friends I made in both were consumerism-free.

Call it what you want - Those in DC and other powerful places have no ones interests at heart but their own.

It's called the "culture"
How you are immersed, what your environ is, plays a huge role in defining you as 'whatever'.
Look at military indoctrination.
But back to advertising... getting someone you are already sold on (like/admire) to sell you something makes it easy. (tiger woods/Micheal Jordan)
If products were sold by unbiased price/pictures/specifications/ingredients/process, commercials would be dull but less misleading.

Good call - I've done the same, and didn't really realize it. I've also tended to find ways to make money from hobbies..

you make a valid point . We are manipulated. I see advertising morally as corrupt as black magic
