  • 2012 and Ubuntu still sucks and so does Wubi

  • Windows XP is no longer any good with all the Firefox, Flash and Java updates. It becomes unstable very fast. So I switched to Ubuntu 11. Downloaded it free. And it works with my ethernet out of the box. I couldn't get wifi to work no matter what I tried. Went to Ebay and got a $140 Dell laptop with Visa disc. Sold the laptop back for $160, kept the disc and COA. Installs all the drivers and stuff automatically. No hassle. Windows is at least twice as good as Ubuntu or XP. Smooth.

  • can someone please tell my why saying linux is always better then windows

I mean in a standard of not wanting to use crazy command lines to do stuff

If that's what you like doing oké but i mean i am a gamer alot of people who use linux encourage other people the greatness of linux .. even if these people are gamers .. sorry but linux isn't good for gaming nor is it easy to acces .. ive been using the new ubuntu a while now and in some ways i really love it and some things i really hate

  • After a while, command line can become kind of fun, actually! Installing from repositories has become second nature, however some things still take some getting used to. Also, some GUI installers and package managers are susceptible to viruses...

  • LInux Ubuntu has been a god send for me... I am a bit intrepid about all the changes in the 11.0 but it's still way better than Windows... I can do my work with it and that is what counts... Thanks for the video budd...

  • cool slide show bro!

  • @topagent open software center and type gnome, and btw netflix works just google it lol

  • i hate ubuntu also becouse i cant watch netflix and i hate the bar on the left side at ubuntu 11.10, if they get the netflix i wil switch back to it on my laptop.

  • 3 year linux user here. Didn't watch other video, but what you say here is right. Its not the system the system is mostly great. People forgetting that not every one is a genius like them, if you don't have the patience for helping people thats fine. But sometimes its best to keep you mouth shut.

  • Changing can be a challenge if your noobish.

All i know is its free, free support, free software, free updates and upgrades, and it doesnt break the EULA to modify it.

Ubuntu sucks for some people, but i use it for what i need it for.

  • Did you say splt tup on your vid @ 4:48 ? I can't find his tutorials under that name.

  • Ubuntu doesn't suck.... But I have a problem with the dependency on *.deb libmp3lame, and I'm getting mad. There's many applications that I cannot use, and I need help. I was looking on Ubuntu Forums, but there's more questions than answers..... If someone can help me, leave me a message, ok? Linux Xubuntu 10.10 - AMD Phenom x4, 4 gb RAM EVG NVIDIA GeForce 256 mb. .... And audio ATI - I Cannot remember the specs.

  • @EnergyElectricEnd

The terminal is the basis for Linux. It may be cryptic at times but it it much more powerful than pushing GUI buttons. These kinds of interfaces go back to the early days of computing and are still there because it is powerful.

  • With all the benefits that come from using open source software you should expect to have to learn at least a few things, but it is a FUN process regardless. UBUNTU RULES, and the community/support is awesome. Been a user for a few years now and I've never looked back. Thanks to all those who've helped it along the way!

  • @swinginmad Good point. Sometimes it can be fun. Promising, at least.

  • @ARTH19970325 Get a man's linux like Arch that has a WINE package that isn't several years old.

  • Sooooo right!!!!! All Ubuntu does is crash during installation, which never happens to any other Linux distro. Ubuntu 11.04 and Fedora 15 always crash if u tweak a thing or two. BUT the problem is that they try to use GUI eyecandies, sooo eyecandies can be a problem...

  • @71GA if you want something that doesn't crash then get ubuntu LTS version. I use linux mint 11 and love it. Doesn't crash ever.

  • This man is SO right!!!

  • Linux, Apple, and Microsoft all suck. I think that your operating systems are much like everything else you have created on this planet, a sick joke. Was it really worth it to destroy the planet in order to create a bunch of lame machines?

  • if you dont have the mental capacity or are wayy to retarded then stay away from it !!! :)

  • you don't have to type apt-get just copy pasta

  • don't forget .deb packages easy for noobs

  • apt-get? synaptic dog....

  • Unix is the King. Anyway Linux is really good. However, some users believe Ubuntu is Linux. It is not like that. Ubuntu sucks. Keep away from it. If you want to spend hours and hours fixing all kinds of issues, go a head and install it. Ubuntu is just an excellent Effort to create a GUI for Linux. But that's it..just an effort. I really hate Windows and I hate to recognize Windows has a much better, friendly and smart GUI.

  • @ahervert551 My Gentoo Linux box is great.

Granted it took me 3 days to get it installed with all my programs and configured correctly but now it can be left on forever and never crash unless the hardware fails.

Its unreal how fast it is. All my programs (except for gimp and blender) open up in a second or less.

Gimp and Blender take about three seconds to load. I can run dozens of programs with no lag!

The bootup is a little slower than I had in mind but 26 seconds isn't horrible.

  • @ahervert551 what the fuck are u talking about hours and hours ? are u crazy? i did not have ANY problems with Linux Ubuntu and it works perfectly fine u idiot it seems you didnt have the mental capacity to make it work....i triple boot ubuntu, vista & 7 and i love all 3.....i have got tons of apps installed and everything is perfect everywhere...you seriously are a stupid noob....[typed this comment from ubuntu]

  • @nrgshkl093 im just this mad, frustated, disturbed, crazy teenager u know nothing much..

  • @nrgshkl093 im just this mad, frustated, disturbed, crazy teenager u know nothing much

  • The funniest thing about ubuntu and the challenge , the greatest challenge is to INSTALL it. O my god, how can you have so many errors and problems. I need help from ubuntu users and linux fans. If I format my computer totally and then insert the ubuntu CD inside and boot, does the installation success chance go high ?

  • @dhakagod

Totally agree. I am trying to install ubuntu hours now. I hate that. But I totally HATE WINDOWS. They made my laptop slower than a turtle and more sick than my grandfather.

  • Ubuntu 10.10 is the worst install module I have ever seen. Destroyed my windows partition in two seconds flat. Ubuntu is for computer hobbyists only. If they want to compete with windows, they have a long way to go...

  • So where ever he/she was at, they called him out as a bitch and so he bitched about it. There are more then one forums out there, not every linux user is that mean. But instead of doing a video about bitching. He/she could of done a more constructive video about an easy way to do something in linux and people do help. If no help then he should of bitched about it. But did he? We are all not mean and evil. But after the bitching rant idk...What do you guys think?

  • I hate Ubuntu 10.04 does not all gaming

WINE is always crashing for all time >_>

    Back Win7

  • @Eragon86micky Its settled as ever before ... gaming = windows .... anything else = linux .

  • i think i like linux however for the "regular gamer" you need windows. Linux is free like windows apps are free. If you like a good linux you need to do allot of research to get everthing to work perfect. Even simpel task like sound is a pain in the ass in linux. But in windows the system stops working (BSOD) for some reason. You like to keep it simpel use windows crack it and its free no problem. Linux well its free to but you need a hand to get it running "fine".

  • In short the way Linux in general works is not efficient. Time is money. If I'm wasting that time doing everything but what I am supposed to then I'm losing money. I WILL ADMIT that Linux can be better than Windows and Mac but from a business standpoint it's a waste unless of course you can get a bunch of IT guys to do the work for you. Point and click is easy yes - BUT IT GETS THE JOB DONE and does it faster.

  • Linux is for nerds with way too much time on their hands. Ask yourself why, the general public continues to use mac and pc and not linux. Remember Windows 3.1 DOS which was before windows 95? When windows 95 came out, the rules changed and almost every mac and PC OS since then, has been increasingly better. The concept of Linux is great, but unless you can get some professional programmers from Windows or Apple to help build Linux, then I doubt Linux will every replace anything.

  • @houstondodgeball Linux and Unix run the internet. it's on hundreds if not thousands of servers worldwide. not mac or windows. that's why the internet rarely has downtime.

  • @experimental0000

servers and desktops are two different animals.

  • @MrTabby5000 yes they are, however, if it was that bad, even servers would not use it. people diss the desktop distros and very few give them an actual chance. even fewer do their research before trying it in order to actually get a better knowledge base for what they're stepping into. much like if someone did or didnt do their homework before upgrading windows and have a driver issue. just takes some thinking, that's all.

  • @experimental0000

I stopped using an ubuntu derivative, linux mint.Video driver issues, went to windows and its fine now.LINUX SUCKS.

  • Your right, Ubuntu does suck... GET MINT!

  • @QuinnySpeed yeah if you like to waste your time use it

  • @grez14 Not not waste, I think your wasting time with WINDOWS

  • The GUI and the CLI both have their uses, though I agree that more GUI´s should be used within Ubuntu/Linux. (by default). Wading through big or even segmented *.conf files isn´t great and it doesn´t give the nice clear overview that a GUI can give. So a lot of stuff in the CLI isn´t about intelligence, it´s cumbersome in nature. That being said...there is also a LOT that is great and fast on the CLI, BASH is truly a great shell.

  • very true, also people who think ubuntu sucks relay it to people that linux sucks

  • spot on mate... spot on.

  • I've been using Linux since 2002.

I tried switching to Microsoft Windows in 2009, but I couldn't. It's just a horrible OS.

  • @Sepero1 Shocked by ineptitude.

  • I cant use google but im linux guru :D

  • Could you post the name of the poster of tutorials you mentioned? Didn't quite catch it. Thanks.

  • ubuntu is a very good os if you ask me :)

remeber linux isnt windows and windows isnt linux

theres no reason to hate something because its diffrent or it dosnt work for you, that dosnt mean it wont work for others. linux should be a alternative but not a

replacement,(though its a replacment for me)

  • it's a programming OS as in you need to know a-lot about computers to use it. I am 17 and i can use it as easily as i was able to use mac and PC.

  • I think it's a oversimplification to say that new users are intimidated by the shell.Linux has a a gazillion of bugs, its inconsistent in terms of usability, both KDE and Gnome are far from being comfortable to work with (too slow, compiz and kwin suck big time) and on top of that there's a myriad of driver related problems.People should stop converting the average user,Linux isn't for everyone.

  • I completely agree!!!

  • I tried it it completely fuck ups my windows operating system

  • Ubuntu sucks but linux mint does not suck, its great.Coming from a former linux sucks person.

  • desktop linux sucks because well, lets face it, the average user doesnt want to edit xorg files or manually configure software. .deb packages are easy to install but i have noticed when downloading software from the web the files are in tar.bz archives and once you extract them there are generally no instructions on how to install the software.

lol all the issues with hardware detection lol , xp detects all my HW and its 10yrs old, 10.04 is only 2 months old and it cant detect anything!

  • Good points, where others get frustrated i see a challenge, such as with compiling programs, it's interesting to have a spanner under the bonnet, and it's fine if people just want next > next > finish for everything. The linux mint forums are very good too, furthermore linux mint is a great distro.

If you want to get linux working the way that you like it, be patient, and you'll get it. Google is most definately your friend, without it things are nigh on impossible for beginners.

  • U SUCK FAT ASS!!!

  • ubuntu is built by everyone that dont say they know shit

  • Both operating systems have their advantages/disadvantages. I've been using Linux since the mid-90s, right now Linux is not ready for mainstream.

The bottom line is, we live in a time when people want everything to work out-of-box and their is nothing wrong with that. We live in a time when technology is making that possible and right now Windows (despite it's problems) offers much of that.

Not everyone enjoys screwing around with command lines or finding drivers that may or may work.

  • Wow I really like this vid although its alittle choppy . You people out there should listen up to this man.

  • you my friend, even if you work in computers world for 15 years, you should know that Linux is the future and windows is going down nice and for sure, tbh your brain is too lazy to use terminal, u like click click finish, that means your brain is going the same "click click , next next finish" . Linux is not for lazy, barinless peoples.

    And get a new webcam.

  • @iulimotor

You're contradicting yourself a bit. If linux is the future and Windows is going down, there is going to have to be obvious "click click, next, finish" solutions or most Windows users will never adopt it. I went to Linux because I can really appreciate FOSS philosophy and I like the amount of choice and customization. That doesn't mean that I don't think WIndows is easier. It is. For most people FOSS isn't worth the effort. Until Linux can adapt, it will remain <10% market share.

  • Whatever works for you. Linux is what works for me, I can't stand Windows for the most part.

  • this is right. i wanted to change from windows to linux but after using windows for over 15 years the transition is not easy. i tried the new ubuntu and had nothing but trouble with it, and there is lack of support on how to actually do things. i have no sound, can't run videos off youtube, can't run games. until these issues are sorted out so the average joe can understand it, ubunto will never go mainstream as on OS

  • Excellent, I couldn't have said it better.

  • Good points. I think you're right on all counts. The distro which is reaching out to the masses, let's say Ubuntu, has got to make everything possible by GUI. And with 10.04 they are getting there.

  • Ubuntu forums..

Great and better than Phone Support for Windows.

  • I have no problem with the learning curve of Linux. The Linux community is quite helpful. I have no probs with the M$ bashing but when people from the Linux community put that negative on converting users from M$ it only heightens the frustration in learning.

I dual boot; would like to be just Linux. But when frustrated it just takes longer to change over. No encouragement just sends the wrong message. Let's leave M$ for creating monsters like Vista and let it evolve back into the dust.

  • Most people find the terminal quicker than most GUI's. it takes one click a paste and enter, done!

  • The only thing a new Operating system takes, is time. Time to learn how to use Linux, and wrap your head around doing things for yourself.

  • bash shell is easy

  • Part 2 F:Linux users are elitists but linux is an elitist os. G:Sudo is your best friend, if you lack the capacity to learn to use it why are you using linux? H:Driver support is lacking but mostly in gaming devices that brings me to I:It's not for gaming its a work os J:Recovery from OS damage hasn't been this easy since mac, I use linux to boot and fix windows partitions K:Security is 1000x stronger than windows L:Ubuntu comes with most software you will ever need if not itslike 2 clicks away

  • If ubuntu sucks then why has my OS not crashed yet? From some of these comments I can understand where you are coming from but you are wrong.A:Linux is not for game simply because companies don't make games for it B:The aesthetics are lacking because its not made to be a pretty os. If you want a pretty GUI download a different gnome. C:Support only sucks for the new user. D:Linux is the most stable OS out there and its free. E:You think your getting into an easy OS but its not so stop crying

  • Ubuntu/Linux works as good as your brain does ... so everyones experience is different , if you are not smart enough to use CLI or google , then linux is not for you

  • @TofuDrifter86 Have to say tho, using the terminal is damned easy. If I'm not too sure how to install a piece of software because the programmer didn't do their job right, then using terminal works much better.

  • @TofuDrifter86 i am smart and i can handle linux BUT there's always problems, for example flash player dont work right, sadabsdkadkajndakn dont work right, you have to spend 4 hours to fix everything,i am sorry but thats useless, maybe linux is faster and you got vmware with hardware acceleration but still linux is a pain, video drivers make me depress, always problems like that pack file is not compatible with debian then conver using the console ,fine, then the file cannot be converted for xreason

  • @TofuDrifter86 Not another zombie luser. Memorizing long commands for the terminal to compile and install a program is not smart. It's stupid. Also, screw software freedom. Like Stallman, I can create a new definition of freedom and convince everybody that it's on the same level as REAL human rights. Spill me all your secrets about your life...if you don't it's a hostile act therefore you should spill all your secrets to me. If you don't, you're against freedom. Sound familiar?

  • @TofuDrifter86 You do NOT really understand the point. Its not about having brain its about having the time (lot of time btw) to learn every command and every detail it requires for you to make a decent use of linux and to be able to solve any issue/problem you would have to face eventually.

If I have a problem with windows I just read a couple of info boxes and then click some buttons and the problem is gone. In linux I would have to check google for an hour to do the same.

  • @floopy312 Why do you need to learn every command? Do you know every windows fix? All you have to do is get a linux distro that has most of the programs preinstalled like ubunu. Then go to the gui of the pakage manager or the software manager. Click on the update or programs you want. its really that simple. Every now and then in a long time ull ever use CLI (command line interface). Even in windows i use cmd to restet the winsock or list the attribs and more....

  • @TofuDrifter86 .... and thats why linux has less than 2% of market share even when the "Great Ubuntu" has more than 5 years going around.

And it is because linux USABILITY simply doesnt exist, at least not at the level you would expect for 2010.

  • @TofuDrifter86 I think what you're saying is, if you don't have a deep knowledge about computers, then ubuntu isn't for you. Just because I can't work with linux doesn't mean I'm dumb.

  • @rocknrolllovers no your not dumb :) but your also not smart enough to use linux.... We cant all be smart about everything that would be crazy. I've never had a problem with linux.. I've had more problem with windows and i know how to fix windows problems.

  • @curemymind well you should work on your english dude lol. See? I suck at linux but you suck at writing a simple message. I guess we're even..

  • Comment removed

  • @rocknrolllovers Work on my English? I didn't know this was English class. Well my bad person, I honestly do not go back and correct my English. But besides my English being bad is that all you have to say? So attack me for my English and not correct me about Linux. Well then you must be one smart person. So, how was that? Was my English good to you? Instead of telling me that my English sucks you could ask me what you didn't understand. Then I can take it from there.

  • @rocknrolllovers Linux folks do tend towards arrogance. Reminds me of a physician I used to work with. He used to spout off about every conceivable subject assuming his knowledge in one area (medicine) meant that he was smarter than most in all spheres of knowledge. A real blow hard who quite frankly was fairly ignorant outside of medicine. Takes all kinds. Don't let them get to you.

  • I agree with the OP 100%. I very very rarely use the terminal... it just isn't necessary anymore... and most average people don't want it. Linux can be very simple to use and doing a search for how to and finding terminal code is frustrating when I know it's simple. Though by the same flip of the coin... we had to learn Windows... and as memory serves me... it wasn't easy either. Regardless... from experience Linux is much easier IMO... Both OS's have problems but I choose Linux hands down.

  • @LinuxUserForever May I ask how you watch Netflix on your Linux?

  • @cyberhmoob I don't use Netflix. From what I'm told it's a piss poor selection anyways. I'm also told Google Chrome will work but don't quote me. I really don't care anyways. If stuff don't work on Linux then I don't need it. I refuse to use MS crap because of the computer dictatorship that it's held for far too long. Think about it... a multi-Billion dollar company that can't(or I should say won't) create an OS that's secure while a free OS can and will... something definitely wrong there.

  • ubuntu sucks! has no support. this is total B.S. I can do anything on windows that they do in linux and ten times better, faster and more productive work. I have linux now, just to show every day how worse it really is. I love my VISTA though. In linux today, i installed one of there stupid support for Nvidia Cards cause i would like a nice display why should i settle for less. But guess what...was online searching 3 different errors, and reasons why it is not detected! ubuntu fails

  • @kprofscrts Wow... clearly not a very experienced user if you prefer vista. Ubuntu only works as good as you make it. If you are unintelligent enough to type in a simple command then by all means have have ur virus party.

  • Ubuntu has no Targeted audience. It has no gamer audience (gamers account for over 34million users), no children targeted it's too complicated, no elderly, half the businesses out there have windows or mac, and the other half are at the store buying windows or mac. Linux Failed on Ubuntu. So where is the audience? Another thing, i can do everything you do in Linux on windows. Even the desktop effects even better! Dont forget the Command Line in Linux is limited, Windows has the biggest support

  • @kprofscrts lol you phail for your phail rant

  • @kprofscrts Er... The CLI in GNU/Linux is hardly limited. There are thousands of comands/c-programs that work on the CLI. Support is actually far better than what I found for DOS. Don't go to the Ubuntu forum though, but some more advanced Linux forums and wikis - Arch and Gentoo offer excellent documentations and communities. Remember that the CLI works pretty much the same on all distros.

  • costs 140 IF you buy it ;)

  • ubuntu does suck. I just loaded 9.10 on this laptop and right out of the box it will not reboot and wireless doesn't work. You go to the ubuntu forums and there's all sorts of conflicting information about how to get it to work. Why? Because there's a million different versions of ubuntu.

  • your retarded. in most cases to get your wifi to work you need to hook it up to a LAN via a cable and download your drivers in HARDWARE DRIVERS. just like what you would do on winblows when you dont have a CD.

  • Dipshit, the driver is there and detected. it's installed.

Just goes to show ya that Linux is nothing more than a series of cheap hacks.

  • ubuntu>windows fuck microshit

  • I think the problem is not with Linux itself but with the ideologues that are so desperate to find an alternative to Windows that they will say anything to get you to believe that it's better than anything we've ever seen.

As a developer myself, coding is very time consuming and good coding is a real undertaking. I hate to sound simplistic, but by nature, people are only willing to put so much in without some kind of monetary reward for it.

It's just the way things are. Everyone has to eat.

  • What the hell is wrong with point and click? Do want to live in the late 80's early 90's? COMMAND LINE? Windows 7 kills everything....it's amazing, and stable, and pretty. :) GRR

  • Hardly any command line stuff really, a couple of copy and paste things which is easier than going through a wizard in windows. One click and linux installs anything, if you cant find it the google it any copy and paste the code. It is really very simple :)

  • @UsedCrx

    and costs 140$+

and geuss what you get for that price, viruses.... you obviously havent seen any themes or anything

  • Ubuntu does suck. What people need to understand though is that Ubuntu sucks ≠ Linux sucks. Also, there is nothing wrong with expecting new users to learn their way around the OS using a CLI. If they truly understand how the OS works, then they'll have no problem doing something in the desktop environment. Teach a man to fish, as they say. This isn't 1995. There's plenty of info everywhere on the web. All a user needs is reading skills, a search engine, and patience.

  • every question that i have had about ubuntu has been answered through the forums i beleive windows is a waste of money and time. OPEN SOURCE!!

  • Cannot even grasp the reasons why it MUST be this complicated.

How can you "make"/install a file if it cannot find a target or a makefile?

Why does Linux prevent me from installing LINUX binary files?

How the hell am I supposed to use a non-"make" self extracting installer if Linux cannot read it?

How can you install new themes, and where can you get the emerald theme manager?

Oh wait, I cannot install this emerald theme manager without knowing how to use "make". Guess I'm fucked.

  • corect ubuntu sucks .... windows 7 no1 the best

  • nope

  • Nice response, I agree with every word you said. I'm UBUNTU user for almost 3 years now, it took some time to adapt to new environment, I use GUI 99% of time, there is no need for console as most people think it is. Regular users can use UBUNTU without knowing what Terminal is and how to use it...

  • Tell you what I am a new user of ubuntu it took me 2 hrs to get everything tweaked on my laptop.Runs perfect. I am able to run and configure many applications from the terminal and from the GUI. I do have a ubuntu book as a reference and it helps a lot. I can play most of my games, other software etc... thru linux. It is great but you have to know what your doing and you are the decision maker. I have no problems Plus i got system backup configured in case I ruin something. Great O/S.

  • linux nvidia drivers are horrible, they are way too bright and they cause my eyes to hurt, give me a headache.I love mint but its a very painful experience.

  • Yeah so Ubuntu is good because it takes 20 times the amount of effort just to watch a movie and the video drivers suck. No games nothing at all.

  • ubuntu sucks ass its impossible for me to install any codecs, the forums dont help worth shit piece of garbage i hate it

  • Ubuntu doesn't even install for me, fucking just sits there and fucking does nothing.

  • people on forums are not paid to help you, if you're as agressive with them as you are right now i understand why you have no answer.

  • the commands arent a big deal fucking pussies waaaa i want to double click

    DOUBLE CLICK MY BALLS

  • I am a new linux ubuntu user. Downloaded the distro from ubuntu website. Installed it on my laptop everything worked except the belkinwireless and nvidia drivers. I had a screen but it chose a best match but i knew i could find the right driver for it. After going to the ubuntu website i found what i needed downloaded it installed it and all is well. this was a xp machine. I used the command line (terminal) very little most was automatic so far I am very happy with karmic koala.

  • i just tried free ubuntu today, and i dont know why i miss my cheap windows so fast after using ubuntu

  • I whould only install linux on virtualbox

  • I agree with the video, Linux distros need to make point and click simple accessibility "shells" for Linux. Not so much command jargon filled computer speak for the terminal. (At least as an option for those who may be new to Linux).

Btw, I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bit) and everything works perfectly fine. I have absolutely no problems.

  • Ubuntu just releases buggy unfinished stuff. Karmic was the last straw for me. Pure Debian 5 now on my desktop and netbook and there both so reliable and fast now.

  • You could see why I think Ubuntu is garbage.

  • and upon upgrading to karmic koala 9.10 last week, my mouse and keyboard completely stopped working. I had to do a complete reinstall.

  • Ubuntu truly does suck. I have had endless issues with it. I removed an UN NEEDED PACKAGE that had NOTHING to do with xorg or video configurations and it somehow destroyed my xorg video configurations. Couldn't fix. Before this, I had audio problems. Before this, I had wifi problems. Before this, i had OTHER video problems (three times). Before this, I had a problem with a broken package that i couldn't fix. I also had adobe flash player problems. I also had Java problems.

  • I agree with you that point and click answers are what most people are looking for, but I think that there are good reasons for why linux forums are full of posts involving the CLI. I do think that a lot of people default to giving help that involves the CLI since it's universal. I'm running Ubuntu but with openbox rather than Gnome or KDE. So if someone tries to help me by telling me where to click I'd be lost since I won't have that GUI application and vice versa.

  • well i like the way it looks, but i just installed and cannot find what i need, it tells me i need wine ndiswrapper to install drivers and shit.. you know this comment is pointless, going back to windows, thats why it makes money :D hmmmm crazy concept i know!

  • Fuck Micro$oft. =D

    The future will be open.

  • Ubuntu is a pile of steaming dogshit.. i switched back to Vista and I am not an average user for your information

  • ubuntu sucks, that is why i love gentoo and arch :D

  • even 9.1 sux I just downloaded it and it keeps disconnecting my wifi, when will they ever get anything right.

  • try a reinstall, ive had ZERO issues with 9.1

  • Tried it twice,it just doesn't work on my computer architecture. Also I cant help that my motherboard has nvidia drivers.

  • clearly you are intimidated by bash terminal, and they dont have to type anything they can copy and paste it, also the community for ubuntu is awesome it really is, most of the time google will come up with the answer someone had the same problem as you did, so please dont bother knocking linux if you cant understand it, ubuntu is the easiest and if you can get your head round it then go back to windows, btw get a decent web cam your webcam sucks

  • Why do you need to do that?with apple you dont need to open any terminal.Macs OS is just another version of windows.

  • Who is intimidated by Linux? To whom is that comment directed? If it's the man in the video, I'd dare say he is not at all intimidated. He's been using Ubuntu for a year and mentions his 15 years of IT / Admin experience. I think his point is that the Ubuntu community tends to be arrogant and condescending (which they often are) and that it would be better to offer help to novices at a novice level, if in fact, promotion of Ubuntu is the objective.

  • Agreed. However in the end its all about people's egos.

  • Ubuntu doesn't suck, Ubuntu is a great choice ;)

  • Its garbage for me.

  • well, i changed back to windows now since im a gamer and its hard to fix game to work good in ubuntu...

  • Maybe in a 1000 year's and maybe i'l use linux cause i have and its hard as hell . don't get me wrong i know a thing or 2 about pc hardware and software. i do oop for god sakes but linux. FUCK OFF

  • Apparently you don't know too much. My grandmother uses Linux the check e-mail.

  • your camera is lacking and ubuntu still sucks. Kernel panic ugh... apt-get new camera

  • I don't like the idea of trying solving every solution with a GUI. The power of linux is that you should never need a GUI. In the past I have managed my fair share of linux boxes. I am by no standard an expert so when I run across a problem I rely on google and forums to aid me. If the solution to my problem involves a GUI 9 time out of 10 the system im working on will not or can not run a GUI.

So my solution is to have a great tutorial on how to use the terminal so I keep my precious CLI.

  • wow really dude Linux is an elitist OS ONLY FOR GEEKS seriously u got it all wrong Linux is the shit and any and i mean any pice of software can run on it given proper config HA

  • how can i play run-escape in HD!?!?!?

  • use the options noob!!!!! RS FTW!!

  • oh har har... i tried that dumb ass i needed to update my my graphics card

  • no u dont noob runescape HD graphics are a joke

  • dude! r u really fighting with me about my own pc!?! i all ready up dated my graphics card and RSHD work just how it did on windows

  • stfu asian

  • wow u r stupid xD if u look a my page, you can see im Canadian you idiot

  • This guy commenting to you is the exact kind of idiot the video is talking about. I guess attacking ubuntu is attacking something that means a lot in their pathetic lives. Whats this "noob" business? Just geeks trying to feel important and above someone else. In the end they have their Ubuntu to play with instead of the opposite sex ; )

  • Windows > Linux & Mac OS X

  • how?

  • what i dont like about ubuntu's comunity is when u want to install a program they just point u out to some program native to linux, that isn't just as good...like i know all that shit, for ex yahoo messenger..lets say u wana install that, well tough luck they are just gonna say try wine or i use pidgin,or that are gonna say amarok is good, damn man amarok is not a good music player, and its ugly too,now songbird on the other hand is cool but its got some little problems

  • i spent hours just to find a way to show what song's im playing on my im's status in ubuntu..,alot of ubuntu fans are quite fanatic about things so they ain't gonna even try to help you get a windows app running on ubuntu

  • If looks are so important then find a skinnable app and use that. Why not get something that actually performs well rather than being a glossy POS. There are many alternatives for common tasks. Amarok is only one app of a great many.

  • brtidwell, you said what I knew needed saying since I joined the cult in March. I'm not pro, but I'm not afraid of Terminal, just annoyed. I need a comprehensive course to get me used to the syntax, as only the unemployed gobs who live in their mother's basement have time to learn this through random manual reading!

They say that Terminal is more elegant, but it depends - not when you are in Nautilus, which won't format DVDs, and you know Windows Explorer would have had it done already, quick!

  • I'm 14 and i got ubuntu running perfectly after 1 week...

and if you know where to look help is everywhere. (also free)

yes it can be a bitch sometimes but i just use youtube, ubuntu chat, and ubuntu forums... not that hard... but then again, like i said, it can be a bitch sometimes...

  • Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) is more polished out of the box, and easier for newbies.

  • i am new ubuntu user and i am lost :( but i am better than 2 days ago

  • The thing that makes Linux so difficult is not the terminal aspects of it but rather the lack of consistency in support. I go to the forums and Google to try to find solutions to the issues, but Linux is so configurable it is nearly impossible to get "one answer" to the problem, so it can get confusing. Additionally, w so many distros out there someone might be trying to help you solve a prob but they are running 8.04 and you're running 9.04 so they may not even know what they are talking about

  • i'm a new user of ubuntu... its great!! but i dont like to study it so much to learn how to do things that in windows are so easy... i use ubuntu all the time, im getting used to it, but there are a lot of little things that are kind of complicated, for exampe: i cannot hear a youtube video and an mp3 at the same time!! i know there's a way to do it, but i have to study in tutorials how to do something that i dont have to worry about in windows....

  • Ubuntu sucks. Unless you want to become best friends with your Kernal and have no life use Windows or Mac. I had to learn code just to have sound, use any program other then the stuff with ubuntu and unbuntu wireless drivers are non existant.

  • i wis-h u released ur code gpl

  • Please shut up and continue using your idiot interface. You have no business using the most advanced operating system in the world.

  • You're a jackass!! Ubuntu is so advanced that it can't even auto-hide it's panels without leaving a quarter of the whole thing sticking out on your screen. Such a feat has never been too much for Microsoft, and still the Ubuntu gurus have the temerity to say it's impossible not to leave "a few pixels" of the panels displayed for your mouse to bring them back. Windows is sluggish, but Ubuntu is just sloppy, and it's worse when the distro gurus are self-declared gods who can't take criticism.

  • Well thats very nice for you. I will continue using the most advanced operating system in the world and you can continue using big brother.

  • Inmate527, I do believe it's time for the warden's boys to beat you down again!

I can fill reams (no, not the kind Bubba gives you), documenting Linux problems in various distros, and with how the Linux community deals with them. You call it "the most advanced operating system.." , but you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

Anyway, I use linux, because it doesn't suck like Windows.

By the way, Bubba just emailed me, asking me to pass along the message that he misses his bitch!
