  • mukhina did a full in on the old crappy floors they had?? impressive

  • @LMA629

    so did Korbut

    in 1976

  • why isn't there a part 3??

  • i always love watching old gymnastics...for some reason today's gymnastics don't make me say, 'wow." There seems to be little emotion; it seems more robot-like.

  • I love how easy gymnastics was in those days, only wish it was like that now. But as for Valerie Liukin performing a triple back on that floor, wow!

  • @willsbob123 - gymnastics would be easy today aswell if they took away all the comforts (they didnt have them back then did they)

  • yes, gymnastics evolves rapidly. What kind of crazy moves do you think they'll be doing ten years from now?

  • @Sublue actually I think they do less crazy stuff nowadays then in the 70s because of all the moves that are illegal ^^; Which is a good thing for the athletes, for their safety...less amazing to watch though eheh

  • R.I.P, Jim McKay. The commentators today don't hold a candle to him.

  • Those must've been some amazing times back in 72 & 76,

to see Olga light up the stadium with her personality & to watch Nadia wow the audience with her performances.

  • i wish they would bring back the traditional uneven bars. it was so much more interesting to watch. when the gymnasts beat the bars (stomach whips), it was absolutely beautiful and the combinations that came out of those were so pretty.

  • @coffeecub can you imagine how painful those stomach whips must've been though?

  • Thank you,Kevin for posting all that great stuff about gymnastics here.I love your videos!

  • Is there a Part 3? It seems odd that all they would show of Nadia is that compulsory routine.

    Thanks!

  • I don´t think there IS a part 3.And it´s NOT odd that they showed only the compulsory routine. The documentary was about the Gymnastics boom that started with Caslavska,Tourisheva and Olga Korbut in the late 60´s and early 70´s. Comaneci came a little bit later so she isn´t quite part of the "real" boom.

  • Yes, IT IS odd if there is no part 3, as this doc. was from 1978-79 the latest(Tracee Talavera turned 12 in Sept 1978) and they only stop at 76 in the story? - and not even the full Olympic games. It just ends? No way. Perhaps there is no upload of the rest of the doc, but you can't tell me there ISN'T MORE to the documentary.

  • There's more

  • Could you upload part 3?

  • Is there a part 3?

  • boutime person nadias routine was special , an to tell u the truth u should not say that she is better i believe nadia worked hard for wat she got a TEN

  • Well, that routine that Nadia got her first ten in, on the uneven bars was in compulsaries, so you cannot compare them really. Her free routine was actually harder than Olga's. She had a release move that may not look dramatic but in fact is very hard and risky. Besides, Nadia had better form and fewer form breaks.

  • me encanta la rutina de las barras asimetrias de olga ella merecia el 10 como nadia comaneci, o al menos haber ganado la general individual en 1972

  • Our adoration of children has ruined women's gymnastics. This is children's gymnastics. Fantastic, sure, but not women.

  • wow..if i would have been in gymnastics then I could have been like level 10...i can't believe how much harder it got...but olga was a GREAT dancer!

  • It would depend on whether you had a good coach or not. If your coach didn't know how to train the level 10 skills from those days, then you wouldn't have gotten them.

  • beautiful!

  • was that marta karoli walking past nadia when she went to wave to the crowd? yeah i think it was.

  • Yep it sure was. It was Marta 31 years and a 1,000 hair-dye jobs ago...

  • @svetaswan what woman dosnt dye their hair? catch up- maybe you have by now honey . UGGGHH

  • I miss the classicism in the floor. I bet somebody comes along that brings ballet back and takes it all.

  • I'm hoping for that to happen, too.

  • Daria Jora is close to that.

  • this was interesting to watch...i dont think any other sport has evolved so much in such a short amount of time!

  • Notice the girl at the end who does a good back somi on the beam but struggles with a back walkover. She's obviously in the sport for the thrills, not the skills. Just like so many gymnasts I know.

  • How did she struggle with the back walkover? And I don't understand, why do you speak so condescending of someone you don't know?

  • I'm not being condescending; I'm merely making an observation. If you want to read replies that are truly condescending, read some of the comments on other gymnastics videos. :)

  • This is the documentary that linked "Nadia's theme" with Comaneci's routine

  • The commentary on Olga is interesting. She was so amazing

  • when was this made and shown

  • This is a ABC special, the Gymnastics Boom from 1979

  • I love the quick little section on the Parkette's gym in Allentown, PA (aka: the gym the 2000 Olympian Kristin Maloney trained at)!

  • Actually, Kristin did not train at that gym. She trained at the 40,000 square foot facility that now stands.(I think they just added on to it not too long ago, so it is even bigger.)I, however, trained at that gym and went as far as 1980 Olympic Trials. I would have loved to train at the newest gym! I am in the short montage at the gym. I remember that day they came to film.

  • That is an awesome memory to have! I would like to ask you - were the Strausses as bad then as they are now?

I competed alongside Parkettes' optional girls for a couple of years and I did not agree with the negative attitudes of most of their coaches.
