Please do not confuse the movie with fact. It took liberties in many ways. Enjoy the film for what it is; but it certainly isn't an historical factual telling of events. Read up on the Guildford Four and don't simply rely on what you saw in this (excellent) film.
When I first saw this movie, nobody in the entire theater moved when the end credits came up on the screen. The movie was numbing, frightening, and heartbreaking at the same time. To see so many persons now being freed in the U.S. after spending decades in prison (thanks to DNA technology), it is mind-boggling to suddenly realize this is but only ONE story of many of horrid miscarriages of justice. @kalq007 It's a lot more than that. Running your hand across the armrest of a chair leaves DNA, and discarded pizza crust also has DNA of the person who ate the pizza. DNA testing has been exonerating dozens of former inmates over the past ten years. If you think DNA testing is crap, just ask Jeffrey Mark Pierce.
Day-Lewis may be one of the most overrated actors. I believe he's talented, but people love legends and myths. If somebody prepares for arole for like half a year people think it's a genius thing to do. I respct his films but calling him the greatest is simply stupid. If a person behaves like a dark brooding genius, people think he's really a genius. Johnny Depp is the best example of this type of actor.
@locyka19 All of the overrating is just media hype really. Daniel Day Lewis is a genius actor, but of course not the demi god that the media is trying to make him out to be. He outshone everyone in Gangs of New York, but in this movie he was upstaged by Pete Postlehwaite, while his work in There Will Be Blood is really some of the most inspired acting I've ever seen. It's really all about the role isn't it? I completely agree with you on Johnny Depp though
4 dislikes?! What the bloody hell is wrong with them? This was an amazing movie, had me in tears by the end, and not only was it based on true events, but the actors did an astounding job of portaying the characters.
I agree - how ironic it is that this comes with Arabic subtitles when we're holding people at Guantanamo whose only crime - much like Gerry Conlon - was to be Arabs or Moslems and be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Put whoever you want in the white house - government only cares about keeping a monopoly on force and coercion. If that means throwing a few hundred innocent people in prison then so be it. The hippies got their diversity poster-child Obama into office. Look how much changed
@duckdown1993 'we'? speak for yourself you fat ignorant bigmac eating oil guzzling world disorder starting american. This scene and the trial scene at the start of the movie always bring me to tears. This movie is one of if my my favourite movie of all time. Daniel Day Lewis is FANTASTIC in it, as always. <3
My boyfriend met him once and was talking to him for ages, aparently he's a really really sound guy. He told him about the Gangs of New York before it had been announced to the public.
Daniel Day-Lewis' expression from 4:01--4:05 is nothing short of artistic perfection. That piece of acting is a gift from God. Anger, pain, an inner battle to remain composed, and an immeasurable yearning for retribution. All of that in 4 seconds and no words. (By the way, I copied the majority of this comment from the top comment in the famous whipping scene in Glory here on YouTube. I give credit where credit is due.) Peace
These were British subjects!! Ulster is British! It doesn't matter if you are born in England,Scotland or Wales!! The British Police were rotten to the core!!!!
Can't blame ALL of the British. Gerry Conlon's lawyer put her very life on the life to see to it that the truth came out in all of this. And obviously, the judge-once he realized what was going on, wanted to find out the truth as well.
@BenAliGtor so did lady dianna spencer...the judge only acted. when he realised he was in a corner. and he had to set them free.justice is very rarely given to the working class where ever they are from....things are no differnt now the scumsuckers are just a bit more clever thats all.
@Tekjammin "You know she wasn't real?" Gareth Peirce? I'm not sure she put her life on the line as such but she was a real person (played by Emma Thompson).
Yes it was the whole 'putting her life on the line' i was referring to. The character in the film is a dramatic creation similar to Peirce in name only.
What's so special about Northern Ireland that the British want to keep it in the Union? I'm neither British nor Irish, and I don't know much about the Troubles, but to me the inclusion of Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom seems like an old relic of British imperialism.
This makes me cringe honestly, bunch of americans and irish coming on here who don't even understand anything about the troubles or what caused it. Its the same old " fucking english" bla bla bla without realising that 99% of the british public had nothing to do with it, or even wanted problems in northern ireland in the first place. We are all bastards because we had no control over what our government did? Right. Look at the bush government or the current one in Ireland, great jobs right?
its all coming out now how fuking the brits were the ira were justified in the war that they took on and how proud the ira should be for fighting whats meant to be one of the best army's on earth. bollocks
@bigconor You know jack shit you twat, how old are you 15? Did you ever have to live in Belfast during the troubles or were you just a wee lad? You know shit mate, and if you think you can give praise to any para military group (Loyalist or Republican) who were active during the troubles then you need a fucking checking over.
@grobo11 34 and from the falls road u buck ejit so lived through the troubles in the heart of it. maybe u arent aware of the saville report how the brits killed 14 innocent people, the report that the paras killed 8 innocent people in ballymurphy just 4 days ago the het said that an innocent man was murdered by the brits in ardoyne and the police covered it up shall i go on, birmgham 6 gilford 4............ now run along and fuk ur mum
Ironic the subtitles are in Arabic, we now have US justice locking people up and admitting to torturing them for 10 years with no end in sight, they have got round the issues of whether there is evidence to convict them by simply saying they do not need to put them on trial.
Apart from the people who were wrongfully charged in this case and in the case of the Birmingham 6, the real tragedy is that those truly responsible for these crimes have never been caught and/or tried for these crimes. As one victim of these bombings once said, "The nightmare ended for these people. It starts over again for us".
@child "those truly responsible for these crimes have never been caught and/or tried for these crimes." It seems likely that the "Balcombe Street Gang" were responsible at least for the Guildford bombings and they were caught in 1975 and held until 98. As for those who really gave the orders? Eamon O' Doherty and Seamus Twomey who were the pIRA chiefs of staff were interned for a time. I would not want to repeat a libel about G Adams suggesting he was senior in the IRA in 74 and C of S in 77.
@cnmmedic218 But those were for other crimes, not the pub bombings. People may say, "what's the difference; they spent time in jail". But officially, the B/ham and Guildford bombings are still considered "open". And had the Balcombe Street Gang been tried and convicted for the Guildford bombings, would they have ever been released? We'll never know for sure but very likely not. So, in the end, they did not get the punishment they deserved.
@childofthemarshalsea. I agree that justice has not been properly served and society needs the criminal to be convicted even if proper punishment is not possible. Four of the Balcombe street gang were given whole life terms in 1977 but by the terms of the Belfast/Good Friday agreement they were released to a heros welcome at the Sinn Féin conference. So even if they had been convicted of the pub bombings they would probably now be out like all the other pIRA lifers. That is the price of peace.
@UncleCreepy99 "Guiseppe Conlan actually planted the bomb that blew up the pub.I was there. I saw him leave." I am sceptical about what you are saying. Patrick "Guiseppe" Conlon was not even accused of planting the bombs. Also I wonder how good your memory could be for an event which happened 36 years ago (when you were 9 if your profile age is to be believed). Also pIRA methods at the time used very long timers on their bombs so unless you saw him plant it even seeing him who prove nothing.
@cnmmedic218 I was actually there with my father who was a raging alcoholic. I remember saying "Daddy, why does that man have that bowling ball candle thingy?"
@UncleCreepy99 "I remember saying "Daddy, why does that man have that bowling ball candle thingy?"" I now assume you are joking. You make him sound like Y Lee Coyote with a cartoon bomb. I fear this has shown my lack of sense of humour but I thought you were just slandering a dead man.
@UncleCreepy99 haha hillarious. You told the police of course? Its funny how the english framed jerry and were looking for any possible evidence to frame him, and here a young person actually saw guiseppe leaving the bomb in the pub and all, and yet, they didnt bother using that eveidence! Plus, you're untrue version of events would have made for a terrible film too! But then, true stories are always the best...
@UncleCreepy99 The is your source for that? and don't say a confession or nitrates on the fingers because that he been delt with. The film is not totally acurate of course. The grounds for appeal were not those shown on the film. Paul Hill went back prison because of an outstanding murder conviction which was not quashed until 1994. Mrs Pierce didn't make such an emotive speech in reality.
That's not exactly what happened. Gareth Peirce found the statement by Charlie Burke, then passed it along to the Crown Prosecution Service. They immediately decided to hold an emergency session of the appeals court, so they could drop the charges against Conlon. The judge wasn't actually that keen to accept the evidence, and reject the previous verdict of his peers. Conlon wrote that he "looked like he was swallowing a scalded cat" as he reluctantly pronounced the case dismissed.
fantastic acting by daniel and emma. Its just a pity the judge stoped procedings before the real truth came out.typical british justice , no inquiry , just early retirement and a big golden handshake

@EazyEVM Congratualtions for saying this! It makes me rightly obsessed with these 4 seconds. DDL deserves 1000 Oscars. Thank you!

Everyone that was in on this coverup should've been hanged out in the media
and locked away for life without parole because they exploited their power,
lied to the public and ruined the life of so many innocent people.

Ironic the subtitles are in Arabic, we now have US justice locking people up and admitting to torturing them for 10 years with no end in sight, they have got round the issues of whether there is evidence to convict them by simply saying they do not need to put them on trial.

Apart from the people who were wrongfully charged in this case and in the case of the Birmingham 6, the real tragedy is that those truly responsible for these crimes have never been caught and/or tried for these crimes. As one victim of these bombings once said, "The nightmare ended for these people. It starts over again for us".
childofthemarshalsea 1 year ago
@child "those truly responsible for these crimes have never been caught and/or tried for these crimes." It seems likely that the "Balcombe Street Gang" were responsible at least for the Guildford bombings and they were caught in 1975 and held until 98. As for those who really gave the orders? Eamon O' Doherty and Seamus Twomey who were the pIRA chiefs of staff were interned for a time. I would not want to repeat a libel about G Adams suggesting he was senior in the IRA in 74 and C of S in 77.
cnmmedic218 1 year ago
@cnmmedic218 But those were for other crimes, not the pub bombings. People may say, "what's the difference; they spent time in jail". But officially, the B/ham and Guildford bombings are still considered "open". And had the Balcombe Street Gang been tried and convicted for the Guildford bombings, would they have ever been released? We'll never know for sure but very likely not. So, in the end, they did not get the punishment they deserved.
childofthemarshalsea 1 year ago

Again, we are lucky to be alive.

@UncleCreepy99 "I remember saying "Daddy, why does that man have that bowling ball candle thingy?"" I now assume you are joking. You make him sound like Y Lee Coyote with a cartoon bomb. I fear this has shown my lack of sense of humour but I thought you were just slandering a dead man.
cnmmedic218 1 year ago
@UncleCreepy99 haha hillarious. You told the police of course? Its funny how the english framed jerry and were looking for any possible evidence to frame him, and here a young person actually saw guiseppe leaving the bomb in the pub and all, and yet, they didnt bother using that eveidence! Plus, you're untrue version of events would have made for a terrible film too! But then, true stories are always the best...
240585birthday 1 year ago
