@AWrunsthevoodoodown umm.. yes you are the only one thinking this. ABB plays dreams like every other show so if you want to hear derek rip it up you have plenty of other chance... when eric clapton steps on stage you let the man play for as long as he wants. the longer the better.
Okay, okay. I take it back. On second-listen, he sounds much more melodic and 'centered'. Eff'-me, I'm a Cream-era Clapton elitist. I accept this. His buildup and resolution is pretty low-key and moving....
Clapton is a master storyteller. There is a root note and lick that he hits at :06, :12, :56-1:02, 1:28, 1:45 and 1:49 of this clip. He keeps playing off of and refering to this.
Some of it may seem "throwaway", perhaps because he 'wrote the book" (according to Duane) but there is an incredible story being told here.
Also, the switchblade he pulls out from about 1:10 to 1:16 is reminiscent of the kind of convoluted storyline told during the Mayall?Cream/Dominos years...
When Derek plays with Clapton, (which he does quite a bit) Eric lets him take lead and he just sits back and plays. The same applies to Doyle Bramhall. But don't ever think that Eric looks like an amateur! And if you want to see him as the ultimate mentor, get the DVD's from the last Crossroads benefit concert. Then you will see why "Clapton is God"!
AS a guitar player and huge Derek fan, I couldn't agree with the following response more..."amateur, huh? why does everything have to be a contest when it comes to guitar players? jeez"
So riight. See you all at Derek in Montclair tonight?
Hmm, I don't find this Clapton lines impressive. It's juz a bunch of unorganized quick guitar lines thrown in with no feel & emotion at all. Mayb I jus miss the Duane "story-telling" guitar lines...
I've got to kind of agree with you. I love EC, but this song (and it's soloing) was all about playing in MAJOR lines. He's playing a lot of minor scales. I mean - what he's doing sounds cool, but it takes away a bit from this song. Duane's original solo on the studio version is absolute perfection and should be approached that way. No need for fast licks and things. The solo needs to be slow, singing and very melodic in this song....
Have you heard any of the bootlegs of Duane playing Dreams live? He played it minimal and he played it baroque. There is no one "Duane" way of playing this song. I've got about 10 versions of Duane playing this live and he's all over the map: Dickey and Berry get into the act, as well. Seek and ye shall find...
Heard a ton of Duane boots. Almost always he was playing in major. Sure a few times he might go out of the major box but rarely. Look - don't get me wrong - I love EC - always have, always will, but this wasn't his best outing. Might be more of a situation to where he just wasn't that familiar with the song.....
Let me come to your defense. Also I love EC as I love only 1 other guitarist (guess who). His playing here in itself is excellent, but it's true it doesn't have the magic and otherworldly feel of the original. And also I have several bootlegs of Duane playing the song and he generally does preserve the mentioned feeling.
I think Clapton is getting off MIGHTILY on this: nothing he does with his own band is in 6/8 time, with Butch anf Jaimoe rolling behind him, he's, dare I say, improvising like he has rarely done since Cream...best stuff I've heard from his sitting in yet...
man that Clapton a.k.a God is something else no matter who he plays with he blends right in.....classic I am so pissed I didnt get to go...for those of you that were there were in for a treat
LOL.... good guess, but I think Clapton of all people doesnt have to borrow a guitar. This was planned for a while. That Fender amp behind him is his as well.
f&ntastic soloing

Wish I had been there to see this show. The only thing that would make this better woudl be seeing Dicky Betts on stage with them.

Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks & Eric Clapton on the same stage = pure gold

personally, i like Clapton improvising on this song ; i don't see why he ought to repeat exactly the original track.

Did you notice he(eric) dropped his pick in the beginning of the solo? He tears it up finger picking. He's awesome. =]

EC only rehearsed one night with the brothers before the 2 shows. Considering that, I think he did pretty damn good.
