  • I didn't know Frank had a fake nose!

  • Frank Zappa was a crazy bastard.

  • (M)other People, from the album "We're only in it for the Money".

  • What song is playing in the background while Frank Zappa is destroying the car?

  • They're really bad actors.. I didn't confuse them with eachother once.

  • Hwhip!?

  • I love that Mike made Frank laugh. Seem like something not anyone could do.

  • far out man. sadly, zappa is kind of a pretentious curmudgeon but the fact that he did this bit shows he has a sense of humor.

  • @NarisTorquere like he asked does humor belong in music

  • Just leave the fucking nose alone!!

    Love Zappas look at 2:34

  • Alright!! The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra will be playing an evening of music by Frank Zappa from his albums 'Yellow Shark" and "Overnight Sensation" next month. Can't wait!!

  • Random and yet funny moment line: "Have you tried reading Mike and Frank?"

  • So, so good. Solid proof that TV shows today suck.

  • total set up. fake ,fake, fake fake.

  • Total fucking genius.

  • I love love it :)

  • "match cut"

  • I heard this clip was banal and insipid when in fact it's really spiffy!

  • "See how we worked this out in advance?"

  • I saw a recent clip of Mike with his son, Jason. Jason makes music for TV and mentioned working on a project with Ahmet Zappa! Here come the sons!

  • We all appreciate Frank - but his only accessible music is "Hot Rats" (brilliant) and some "Freak Out." Now Lets give Nesmith some credit - "Daily Nightly" is a good trippy tune he wrote for The Monkees (using a Moog). Frank had his genius moments ("Peaches En Regaila", "Little Umbrellas", "Brain Police" - maybe 10 more) - but he churned out TONS and TONS of crap hidden behind the pomposity of weirdness and musical snobbery. I like Frank - just don't keep calling him God.

  • @PicnicHikeMusic I feel sorry for you having to listen through all those tons and tons of crap to be able to make that statement. What does it matter to you that someone chooses to call him God, though? Can't you just not care about entertainment you do not like?

  • @Jornev , I'm just saying that Frank is fascinating enough (as this clip shows) in terms or intelligence and originality to search out his "accessible" stuff. But you may disagree about what his best stuff is. Believe me, I wish he was around to do a number on American Idol. We need his humorous perspective. You can easily "search out" his stuff on YouTube. Look for "Mr Green jeans" - the 1968 jam. Great stuff. I just wish he got down to making music like that more often.

  • @PicnicHikeMusic Hate to be that guy, but Micky Dolenz was responsible for the Moog part on "Daily Nightly". Great song, though, even without the Moog; Nez actually is one of my favorite composers.

And I think "Apostrophe" and "Jazz From Hell" are pretty easily accessible, man.

  • Now I can die in peace having seen Frank Zappa wield a pair of Nunchakus.

  • No you're a popular musician and I'm dirty gross and ugly. lol

  • I think they purposely mispronounced "banal" to see if it would pass the censor (obviously it did). I suspect the whole playing the car routine is a reference to Zappa's early 60s appearance on the Steve Allen Show, where he played a bicycle.

  • @russallert I believe you're correct; that's actually a pretty neat tv clip..

  • @russallert : My idea is that your suspicion is right, it was certainly the first thing on MY mind ;-)

  • @russallert : My idea is that your suspicion is right, it was certainly the first thing on MY mind ;-)

  • this was brilliant.. it's great how Zappa pissed on most of the 60's pop groups, but actually appreciated the Monkees & their struggle.. thanks for posting!

  • Amazing!

  • Comment removed

  • Soporific.

  • Freaking great!!

  • @m11gtr no. franking great.

  • For those who don't know, Zappa was a freaking genius "compositionally" speaking. He was like Billy Strayhorn with an electric guitar.

  • @Hoopermazing

The funniest thing about your statement is you're saying, "those who don't know" will obviously know who Billy Strayhorn is(whoever the fuck that is), but wouldn't know who Frank Zappa is. Haha.

It's similar to saying Paul McCartney is like Edith Head with a bass.

  • @patton303 I'm a jazz guitarist. So, anyone who doesn't know who Billy Strayhorn was is dead to me and of no consequence. I don't see how the Edith Head analogy is at all apt. Billy Strayhorn and Frank Zappa were both compositional geniuses, who both began studying classical music but achieved fame in other genres. The connection between those parallels and the one you propose, between Paul McCartney and a bespeckled costume designer, is beyond me.

  • @Hoopermazing

Wait... If I'm dead to you then I must be a G-G-G-Ghost!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Hoopermazing If folks here don't know who Zappa was, they sure as shit won't know who Strayhorn was.

  • @Jasontis HA! Thats fer sure

  • this is hilarious lmaooooo

  • zappa always had a great sense of humor

  • If you listened to the sound "banal and insipid" was from the clip and that on the first album "Freak Out" FZ himself wrote that; if the Mothers cleaned up there act they could be as big as The Turtles, while attributing it to a record executive, and therein lied the inside joke of Flo and Eddie actually joining the Mothers in 1970 for Chunga's Revenge.

There is the history and I hope I no longer have to hold your hand as I walk you all thru the obvious.

You have been stuffed into my mold.HA

  • The irony of all this is that Frank actually "got" the Monkees before others did. If you really listen to it it's actually very well written classic pop. Frank in my view was pure genius - way ahead of his time. Very interesting

  • Mike looks more like Ringo waving the peace signs in the beginning than he does Zappa :P

Such an amazing video. "This is one of our cute numbers".

  • Hey npspec34, the fact of the matter is, the Mothers were too intelligent of the prevailing mentalities to be pop, and far too artsy. And they did NOT look like some wimpy teen idols. Not for brainwashed conformists, indeed.

    Rock on, Frank.

  • Well said sir. Zappa lives

  • It just goes to show,

that if the Mothers had cleaned themselves up,

they could have been just as big as The Turtles.

Or at least as banal and insipid as The Monkeys.

  • ha ha his nose keeps fallin off

  • Excellent!

  • "Lets....Whip over to the car".....

  • The Great Oracullo!

  • the person bashing the car is Mike Nesmith, right? not Zappa?

  • no, the person bashing the car is the real Zappa, and mike is conducting!

lolz, and i luv the why mike pronouncing the 'wh' sound!

  • "The soul of Our Music the monkees music lies somewhere between the 1 1/2, 2 1/2, 3 3/4, and the Giant C Major chord on the piano"

were they making fun of Davy and Charlie Smalls's interview from the previous episode?

  • "because I heard you were really SPIFFY at it"

this is amazing, lol. and nonsensical.

  • they're joking about where the accents are in their songs

  • does anyone understand what theyre on about during 1:44-2:01?

  • ...bullshitting.

  • Rockgod111 asks "does anyone understand what theyre on about during 1:44-2:01?"

On a previous episode of 'The Monkees,' Davy had musician Charlie Smalls on as a guest, and their conversation, which was meant in earnest, was about different kinds of soul music, and how in white soul the accent is on the one and three beats, and black soul is on the two and four.

So in *this* clip, Mike and Frank are kinda taking the piss out of Davy and his segment.

  • It's musician talk. Has to do with the emphasis on the main beat and repetition of the composition.

  • I'm a dork... i so did not see this before I left my comment... that's what I thought... It's really funny.

    Davy Jones has no "Soul"

  • ...the comment by RSG2006 I Mean

  • Probably intended for the post-HEAD season that never happened - but - wow! - not much else to say -

  • I think it's funny... I loved this show and still do!

  • No, YOU'RE the popular musician, I'm dirty gross and ugly. My favorite line.

  • FUNNY as HELL! Zappa was a genius as we all know! Papa Nez was a true visionary back then.

  • OH my gosh, look at Mike's eyes at 1.08. SO FUNNY.

  • Imagine this on Birmingham Alabama TV when it aired. You think they went wild?

  • heyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! hems aren't funny! ouchhhhhhh!

  • why are you fighting over stupid monkeee vid? Time on your hand hummmmmmmm! Really!

  • Quite! you go but on your william hung cd.

  • Who were you looking up in the search? The Monkees, Nesmith or Zappa? Had to be one of them. And, WHY did you watch it? Just to make that lame joke? I guess I'm a defensive, since I had the pleasure of meeting Nesmith & Tork 10 years ago. And, sorry to hear you've had hemorrhoids. Luckily, that passed me by. Peace.

  • By the way, read my last post to you. THAT'S the correct way to spell "hemroids".

  • wait, can someone explain this to me? they're playing each other? what now? this is weird.

  • Perfect viewing for the before bed bongload (whatever folks! FZ may not done it than a couple of times, but his band members sure did!... trust me, I know quite a few!)

Anyhoo, thanks for sharing! A little quiet and this version easily has the best picture quality.

  • I now believe in God!

  • Yes, but he forgot to come down in between them!

  • frank zappa claims to have smoked no less than ten joints in his life.

  • GENIUS! GENIUS!

  • fantastic quality.

  • This is the best rock music interview ever. Zappa and Nesmith ... two truly brilliant guys.

  • Who's Frank Zappa????

  • You should just go kill yourself if you've never heard Frank Zappa. Or go listen to some Zappa and the Mothers.

  • Well alright. No need to get uptight. I'm sure Frank Zappa would be be happy to know he still has a loyal fan following. :)

  • You should just go kill yourself if you think that anyone who's never heard Frank Zappa should just go kill themselves. Or go eat some yellow snow.

  • Yum ... yellow snow ! Seriously though - there are some kids today who don't know who Frank Zappa is (or know about Dweezil or Moon Unit or Valley girls ... their memory is limited to the last ten years or maybe less).

  • sad, isn't it?

  • Hey wait - wouldn't it just be better to listen to some Frank Zappa and see if you like it?

  • ur joking right? If you aren't, then don't joke like that no more!

  • Euroturo2010: "Who's Frank Zappa????"

He's going to be the newest member of the Byrds!!! Aren't you paying attention?!?!

  • Um no, not really. I'm too caught up in The Monkees right now. That's the only reason I found out about Frank here. But maybe I'll check him out--after this Mike-Davy-Micky-Peter obsession has calmed down a bit. :)

  • Euroturo!..I've learned to put (joke) at the ends of things I mean to be taken humourously...Like this; Who's Frank Zappa?(joke) That way,you avoid vacuous advice from people named after nerve gas used to kill "enemies" of the Nazi German state.

  • Hey, thanks for the advice. Although I really didn't know who Frank Zappa was until I saw this. Even then, all I gathered was that he was a singer.

  • He's kinda like Weird Al---kinda---only serious, most of the time...

  • I dont think Weird Al would want you to compare him with Frank Zappa

  • I remember seeing this some years back when I would watch the show...I didn't get...

  • I have this on The Monkees Season two box set. This is actually from the second to the last episode. There were only 58 episodes. That was the first time I ever heard "Mother People."

  • well hey i'm 13 years old and i love zappa

  • Amen, me to. Haha. I'm all like 60s and tripped out all the time, although drugs don't do me. haha...

    Epic.

    Cool beans with gravy.

  • this is where they where destructing the show.

if only the kids knew how cool it was. the beatles loved it.

  • "The Monkee's music is banal and insipid?!?" Great shit.

  • wow i had NO IDEA that Frank Zapp was on da Monkees, this is really funny!

  • thanks for posting the un-edited uncut version!! the 2 minute stuff suxx good on ya mate!!

  • this is one of my all time favorite scenes from television

  • look at the quality difference!

  • The digital remastering is fantastic!

  • I wish I had some of whatever they were both on to come up with this way cool gem!

  • Zappa didnt do drugs or drink. Would have been on Coffee.

  • I thought they were really spiffy at being each other.

  • "The Present Day Composer Refuses to Die". Miss you FZ.

  • Mike can't do accents/voices for much. Though they're not trying to sound like each other, someone i know was sorta complaining that Frank did a better job than Mike. I didn't notice that... I love that F kinda get's on M's case for hyperpronouncing his "wh"s

  • Says who? Mike can pull off any accent and make it sound right even Frank said that about him. Mike and Frank were sounding like each other but not by voice tone but, by wording and Frank was caught up in the moment the way that Mike was-just simply having a good time because of all the excitement the way he knew that Mike felt like that...Frank was impressed by Mike's pronouncing of his words in the enunciating in being very precise the whole time

  • I think they were both high and we shouldn't be so critical.

  • frank zappa never got high, in his autobiography he stated that he didn't do drugs

  • I second that statement.

  • Yep he smoked ten doobies (whilst listening to What a Fool Believes...maybe) and didn't like it.

  • i love this

  • definitly we missU Fz

  • Funny stuff. We miss you, Frank.
