Alright!! The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra will be playing an evening of music by Frank Zappa from his albums 'Yellow Shark" and "Overnight Sensation" next month. Can't wait!!
We all appreciate Frank - but his only accessible music is "Hot Rats" (brilliant) and some "Freak Out." Now Lets give Nesmith some credit - "Daily Nightly" is a good trippy tune he wrote for The Monkees (using a Moog). Frank had his genius moments ("Peaches En Regaila", "Little Umbrellas", "Brain Police" - maybe 10 more) - but he churned out TONS and TONS of crap hidden behind the pomposity of weirdness and musical snobbery. I like Frank - just don't keep calling him God.
@PicnicHikeMusic I feel sorry for you having to listen through all those tons and tons of crap to be able to make that statement. What does it matter to you that someone chooses to call him God, though? Can't you just not care about entertainment you do not like?
@Jornev , I'm just saying that Frank is fascinating enough (as this clip shows) in terms or intelligence and originality to search out his "accessible" stuff. But you may disagree about what his best stuff is. Believe me, I wish he was around to do a number on American Idol. We need his humorous perspective. You can easily "search out" his stuff on YouTube. Look for "Mr Green jeans" - the 1968 jam. Great stuff. I just wish he got down to making music like that more often.
@PicnicHikeMusic Hate to be that guy, but Micky Dolenz was responsible for the Moog part on "Daily Nightly". Great song, though, even without the Moog; Nez actually is one of my favorite composers.
And I think "Apostrophe" and "Jazz From Hell" are pretty easily accessible, man.
I think they purposely mispronounced "banal" to see if it would pass the censor (obviously it did). I suspect the whole playing the car routine is a reference to Zappa's early 60s appearance on the Steve Allen Show, where he played a bicycle.
this was brilliant.. it's great how Zappa pissed on most of the 60's pop groups, but actually appreciated the Monkees & their struggle.. thanks for posting!
The funniest thing about your statement is you're saying, "those who don't know" will obviously know who Billy Strayhorn is(whoever the fuck that is), but wouldn't know who Frank Zappa is. Haha.
It's similar to saying Paul McCartney is like Edith Head with a bass.
@patton303 I'm a jazz guitarist. So, anyone who doesn't know who Billy Strayhorn was is dead to me and of no consequence. I don't see how the Edith Head analogy is at all apt. Billy Strayhorn and Frank Zappa were both compositional geniuses, who both began studying classical music but achieved fame in other genres. The connection between those parallels and the one you propose, between Paul McCartney and a bespeckled costume designer, is beyond me.
If you listened to the sound "banal and insipid" was from the clip and that on the first album "Freak Out" FZ himself wrote that; if the Mothers cleaned up there act they could be as big as The Turtles, while attributing it to a record executive, and therein lied the inside joke of Flo and Eddie actually joining the Mothers in 1970 for Chunga's Revenge.
There is the history and I hope I no longer have to hold your hand as I walk you all thru the obvious.
The irony of all this is that Frank actually "got" the Monkees before others did. If you really listen to it it's actually very well written classic pop. Frank in my view was pure genius - way ahead of his time. Very interesting
Hey npspec34, the fact of the matter is, the Mothers were too intelligent of the prevailing mentalities to be pop, and far too artsy. And they did NOT look like some wimpy teen idols. Not for brainwashed conformists, indeed.
Rockgod111 asks "does anyone understand what theyre on about during 1:44-2:01?"
On a previous episode of 'The Monkees,' Davy had musician Charlie Smalls on as a guest, and their conversation, which was meant in earnest, was about different kinds of soul music, and how in white soul the accent is on the one and three beats, and black soul is on the two and four.
So in *this* clip, Mike and Frank are kinda taking the piss out of Davy and his segment.
Who were you looking up in the search? The Monkees, Nesmith or Zappa? Had to be one of them. And, WHY did you watch it? Just to make that lame joke? I guess I'm a defensive, since I had the pleasure of meeting Nesmith & Tork 10 years ago. And, sorry to hear you've had hemorrhoids. Luckily, that passed me by. Peace.
Perfect viewing for the before bed bongload (whatever folks! FZ may not done it than a couple of times, but his band members sure did!... trust me, I know quite a few!)
Anyhoo, thanks for sharing! A little quiet and this version easily has the best picture quality.
Yum ... yellow snow ! Seriously though - there are some kids today who don't know who Frank Zappa is (or know about Dweezil or Moon Unit or Valley girls ... their memory is limited to the last ten years or maybe less).
Um no, not really. I'm too caught up in The Monkees right now. That's the only reason I found out about Frank here. But maybe I'll check him out--after this Mike-Davy-Micky-Peter obsession has calmed down a bit. :)
Euroturo!..I've learned to put (joke) at the ends of things I mean to be taken humourously...Like this; Who's Frank Zappa?(joke) That way,you avoid vacuous advice from people named after nerve gas used to kill "enemies" of the Nazi German state.
I have this on The Monkees Season two box set. This is actually from the second to the last episode. There were only 58 episodes. That was the first time I ever heard "Mother People."
Mike can't do accents/voices for much. Though they're not trying to sound like each other, someone i know was sorta complaining that Frank did a better job than Mike. I didn't notice that... I love that F kinda get's on M's case for hyperpronouncing his "wh"s
Says who? Mike can pull off any accent and make it sound right even Frank said that about him. Mike and Frank were sounding like each other but not by voice tone but, by wording and Frank was caught up in the moment the way that Mike was-just simply having a good time because of all the excitement the way he knew that Mike felt like that...Frank was impressed by Mike's pronouncing of his words in the enunciating in being very precise the whole time
