that whole staircase thing had so confused when I was little :P and the whole geese thing. If you're rich why would you want a bunch of animals running around???
@troubel911 Don't quote me on this, but I think it's because if he were wealthy, he'd have the money to have those animals. The fact that he'd have them would show he was wealthy.
This musical is so great. Not only does it have fantastic songs and a badass lead but it also has a good story. Usually you can only get two of those.
The story of Fiddler on the Roof takes place in Russia under the Czar and before communism. I have studied communism quite a bit and its history. There are many versions of communism but they all have one thing in common and that is a 100% failure rate. If you don't think so look at the history of any communist country.
There are no rich men cause its all perspective. There are those without a dollar to their names but have family and friends that love them. If you asked that man if he were rich he might say he was the wealthiest in the land. I guess what i'm saying is it's all relative. Hopefully one day there will be no classes, no poor, rich or middleclass just people in a world based on unity, cooperation and equality with no borders, no theft, no war, no lies, no distrust. A united world utopian society !
that would be nice. personnally, money isn't important to me, and I try to not be too egoist, but i realise that in this world, if you want to survive, the best way is to be ambitious, cupid, merciless... if you are just good, you just end up on a cross... :-(
@tattoonaters Communism is the form of government they have not an economic system! What i am describing is called a resource based economy and would be based on a democratic society! Though RBE is sometimes called stateless communism let me assure you it is quite different. PS: you wont have to worry cause there are too many greedy, selfish, narcissistic, egotistical, vain, imperious people and so i guess we are stuck in a world filled with war, greed and pollution! Goodluck with it !
Great song in an awesome movie! So catchy! I watched this like 2 months ago and today someone just by chance hummed the first 3 notes of this and it was instantly caught in my head again! I was humming this for the rest of the day, annoying people!
If I were a rich man, Yaba dibi dibi dibi dibi dibi dibi dumm.
All day long I'd bidi bidi bumm, if I were a wealthy man!
I wouldn't have to work hard! Yaba Dibi dibi dibi dibi dibi dibi dumm.
If I were a bidi bidi rich didle Diddle didle didle man!
the movie is based on Sholom M'Leham's books on Tevia, the milkman. It shows pre-1905 Czarist Russia, as there was an attempt on the Czar in 1905 called "Bloody Red October' as a prelude to the 1917 Bolshevick Revolution. The movie touches every Jewish bone in my body. It was time of my great grandparents. My grandmother lived in time of the progroms and the AntiSemitism. What wonderful piece of musical theater showing 19th Century and early 20th Century Jewish Ghetto life. Wonderful!
@Mir11Mir they did in a way. the gray parts in his hair/bear are pieces of the directors hair that they cut ff (the director was white-haired) and wove into his hair/beard
@stl49erfan I just learned this myself the other day. A little more trivia for you - Tevye later reprized the roll in touring productions of the show and the actress who played his daughter Tzeitel in the movie appeared with him playing his wife Goldie.
I saw the Farewell Performance of Topol in Fiddler when it came to San Diego. It was the greatest musical I've ever seen on stage! He's just as great as he was in the film 30 years ago! I <3 Topol!
I remember watching this movie the first time when I was a kid. I laughed and was puzzled a bit when he sings to build a third staircase just for show.
@unknownloner101 Did you know that the story and movie "Fiddler on the Roof" is a real story about real people who came to the U.S. as refugees fleeing religious persecution? There is quite a lot more story than what the movie shows.

Golde: You'll be late for the Sabbath!
Tevye: Knock on my door! Knock next time! ...did you see anything?
Golde: No, Tevye, I didn't see you dancing and singing to the animals again.
Tevye: Good.
