I used to go to the new baths when it first opened until I saw the attendants fishing a turd out... then I found a used jr in a changing room - classy
I'm from north shields and met a byker girl. lived in byker 9 years. despite being burgled once i think its an excellent place to live. people are friendly and the idiot who thinks people have to be white to be "good" well thats a statement that reflects on you there my friend. people in byker dont care about skin; its a friendly place !!
The Byker housing scheme attempts to capture the 'sense of community' which other post war housing projects were so criticised for destroying. Architects of such schemes had the right intentions. There were general improvements which were lacking in the housing in which these replaced. Better sanitation, ventilation & lighting etc. The Newcastle (Geordie) traditon is represented well with the use of 'Hutchie' music. A tradition sadly dying out among younger Geordies. Tyne & Wear values declining
usual rubbish - it was just a diffrent crud heap pre wall. People are queing up to live in the wall. Problem is there's no more ships for half wits to hammer rivets in ...
I was born in Byker and it died when the Byker Wall went up. I was a 60's kid and it was great.. Now I wouldn't want to live there free. What a shame. I have great memories and I will never forget them. Shame the kids of today won't feel the same.
Byker died when thy pulled it down in the first place, the community spirit, and the fact that we all had nowt, seemed to go with it, the kids of the 60s got the best out of byker.
@ILuvNUFC Hi! I love your photos! I was just wondering - do you have ANY idea where FELL STREET used to be? My Grandma lived there when my dad was born and I would just love to know where it was, or even what is there now. I can't seem to find this information anywhere! Would be great if you could help!
byker isnt full of shit at all 'wackyjnr' evryone mite take a bit of dope or sumet but in byker evryone is treat the same and were all equal unlike places where all the rich people look down on people who arent as fortunate no matter wat evryone in byker is part of one team so careful wt yah sayyin there m8
My mates from Byker now living in Birkenhead which I'm dissapointed to say is, by the looks of these photo's a much scruffier town. Now I know what to expect if I ever get round to visiting. It looks very art deco. lol :)

Yeh Byker is looking rather rough these days. When the regeneration took place they built all the new houses very cheaply and I reckon they only had around a 20-25 year life span/ Most of it was built over 30 years ago now!
Aye the council are currently giving the whole place a well overdue paint job. I still reckon it could do with being flattened and some proper houses built! :)
my family lived here from the 60s (the venus family) i think they lived here up untill early 2000 although i am not sure

I kind of meant Birkenhead's scruffier, but the only buildings in Byker that aren't painted blue/red/green is the church & the pub !

I also lived in Janet Square for a short while too.
I've got a few photos of Janet square to add to my photography website at some point in the near future.
Look in my YouTube profile for the URL.
