I was at garner state park a few years ago and danced with a beautiful girl to this song and saw her every night. unfortuneately i never worked up the courage to get her number. a year later i went back and we recognized each other. We fished and hiked together the entire week. We are going back again this spring break to see eachother! If she didn't live so far away I'd make her mine. This song brings back so many memories!

The sun sinking west is a metaphor. I always thought it was symbolic for a good thing (e.g. the day in the metaphor) giving way to something cold and dark (e.g. the night in the metaphor). Why pick Mendocino County instead of any other county? It's fun to say...

GREAT song! Willie Nelson can do no wrong, and Miss Womack is fine on this too. I read some of the comments below, and just wanted to share that I had the pleasure to see Willie several years ago - he's exceptionally nice to his fans- it was a chance passing, only for a few minutes, but I will never forget it- I've been a fan for many years, and knowing he's a really nice guy only makes me admire him more.
