  • Had I had any smarts as a younger man drumming I'd have seen this coming. Well, off for my first guitar lesson!

  • I wish to find out the name of this song. Also, it would be great to see the whole concert. If this exists, it would seem reasonable that the whole concert does as well. Anyone have any info?

  • I want this dvd soo bad!! Anyone know where I can be able to find it?

  • Man, this guy's got rhythm!

  • Alright. He should be the new DT drummer.

  • @thisiswebbmaster and DT would sounds different but good.

i want to hear some new drums sounds on DT.

  • I met Rod about a week ago, Not only is he one of the BEST out there , He is a really Nice guy!!!

  • He's amazing! Hooray for lefty drummers, I'm a lefty! :)

  • Excellent drummer,, seen him play in Newcastle... one of the best

  • Is his snare triggered?

  • @Stockholmsyndromeboy it's not

  • Whatta good sound!!!! :D

  • Ma davvero!! Questa e' musica!!!

  • I'm a lefty drummer and even I can't get used to seeing lefties, lol.

I could however get very used to seeing Rod and Jordan playing together.

    Love this!!!

  • Rudess the best

  • From wich year of Modern Drummer is this?

  • @niniaty it's from 1998

  • My best friend took drum lessons from Rod back in 1978 on LI NY at a Drum Center. Said he was a great guy and teacher and told me he had mad skills then. I think Rod is a very good, but not great soloist. However, the work he did with the Dregs was nothing short of incredible. Their progressive creative style allowed him to shine, and he did. I feel his double bass work is some of the finest I've heard. Never obtrusive. I'm biased, but I think he's one of the better drummers of our generation.

  • He is an amazing drummer, and one of the kindest, most genuine, most utterly HUMBLE people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

  • Yes, the video above is an example of multiple change up on all limbs, nearly impossible to follow Rod. You watch Thomas Lang very good technically, but something about the fluidness of Rod technique that has always captured my attention. Some drummers are good at soloing, but fail to recognize the spirit of the song. Put Rod with music and he is among the worlds best drummer. Listen to any Dregs, Steve Morse CD. Case closed.

  • Rod is one of may all time favorite drummer. He can play any style or type of music. Not many drummers can record and tour with Morse. Rod was doing odd time syncopated stuff back in the 1970's like on Night Meets Light and other songs on What If album. Rod has fills for day days and can follow Morse like water!

  • Had him as a teacher this year at Berklee, he's seriously one of the sweetest and most positive people I've met, much less met with weekly for a semester

  • I agree that he's an excellent drummer, and a much better one than I am of course, but I'm hesitant to add him to my list of favorite drummers because of stuff like 0:50 - 0:54

  • So that spot wasnt as smooth as could be.......(or you just dont like d.bass)..........but we all have bad moments......... if he is not on your list of favorites.........he will live. Check out more then 2:06 of him..it's worth it.He's on my list of favorites along w/Bissonette, Steve Smith and Simon Phillips....................all four are great, well rounded drummers that can play almost everything w/great feel and dynamics. Going to see Bissonette two weeks from tonight.....should be good!!!

  • hahahah when i was readin this comment i was in 0:46 and i was just like xD when i heard the spot you mentioned

  • Is he using Premier Signia drum in this video?

  • I don't think I'll ever get used to watching lefty drummers. =) He's amazing though.

  • i'm a lefty, so i guess it's just natural for me ;)

saw him a few years back at the Paradise (Boston) for a Dregs' gig. we got there early. he was the only one in there, doing his soundcheck.

i was walking around, to check it out. told him i couldn't hear one of his drums. he adjusted the mic and all was good.

that night, he did one of the best solos i've ever seen him (or anyone for that matter) do.

the man's just a total class act

  • Rod's on my short list of favorite drummers. He was added to the list circa '78 when I first saw him live with the Dregs ;) The guy's got incredible chops. One of the most melodic rhythm masters out there.

  • Professor Morgestein...what else can be said. And he is an exelent classic pianist too!!!

  • anybody knows the name of the song?

  • yeah ,,, it's called "plam plum zap zap"

  • Rod is really an amazing drummer. For those interested, check the album "Bring'em back alive" from Dixie Dregs. Amazing drum playing there (and of course, the whole band rocks, they're all great musicians).

  • What an absolutely brilliant drummer this guy is.

What's sad is that I had forgotten all about Rod until recently when I was on Myspace checking out Jordan Rudess's CD.

The guy is an absolute beast on the kit! Of course you'd have to be to be playing behind the likes of the best keyboardist on earth!

  • I would thoroughly appreciate it if this song was posted in it's entirety...I love this song..btw, this is a good example, among many others, where Rod uses a very light touch on the drums--especially in the beginning.

  • One of my all time favorites!

    Rod's a stud behind the drumkit !

  • gentlemen: rod paid his dues making no money while playing with the dregs. now he's entitled to make some money with winger. he's the man!

  • wow morgenstein is a god on the drums. Too bad his talents were overshadowed by being in WINGER in the 80's. He is the man!

  • Total example of a metal drummer who joined the wrong band.

  • That is some fine drumming!

    Mitchzizzle:

I have to disagree that Rod is a metal drummer. Why do you think he is?

  • I just think that his style is way too heavy for the kind of music he is accompanying. Just my opinion based on his style in his solo, and his power when playing. I think he would have been much better suited in a heavier band.

  • I see your point. just look at this video and it will explain a lot
